Sign Matty Scarlett at the end of this year?? Just heard on Footy Classifieds that he is out of contract at the end of the season, along with Ablett Bartell Ling Ottens etc., and with Pratt and Swann working together we could possibly sign him.

Although, this is just a dream and no where near reality. The odds of him leaving Geelong is REALLY low, especially to come to us...

Yet you never know...

definately be some quality players that will leave geelong at the end of year, they wont be able to keep them all due to the salary cap.
You never know who's going to leave for the $$$

exactly what i was thinking... Bartell and Ablett would be first priority and they would take a good percentage of the salary cap on their own.... will be a very interesting time at the end of this season that's for sure.

How old is Scarlett? Not sure how if he has enough years left at his peak to be of use comparable to what we'd have to give up to get him.

And anyway, isn't Jonathon Brown out of contract this year? I'd be moving heaven and earth to get his signature, and not thinking about anything else until he re-signs with the Lions...

could sign the two positions we badly need in one year... CHF and FB...

I'd like to ask this question to everyone on the Carlton Board: if we were, say, 4-14 (W-L) at Round 18, would you be willing to tank the last 4 games knowing you would DEFINATELY get John Brown AND matty Scarlett??

not saying we will, just a theoretical...

You know that question will just start an endlessly circular series of posts between Thrawn and his group and whoever the pro-tankers were last year. There aint no-one who will be swayed from one camp to the other. Is there?

Why would a player like Scarlett leave the cats at this stage of their career?

Surely premierships are more important than money...

I'd be highly surprised if any of those Geelong players were playing anywhere else next year

I cant stand tanking talk, lets put that rubbish behind us and move on as a club. Our players and coaching panel need to take responisibility for their destiny right now and cant have this loser mentality.
Draft day will come soon enough, worry about the fricken season first!

Some will, its pretty much inevitable. Probably not the core group - I'd say Ablett, Bartell, Ling, Scarlett, Harley, Hawkins, Ottens, Johnson are secure. But of the rest, at least one or two will a) slip in form and confidence and find themselves out of the senior side, and b) have to take considerably less money to remain at Geelong.

In that case, you'll probably see the Cats 'suggest' the player look elsewhere, as happened last year with King etc. Kelly seems the prime candidate, but it would only take a slip in form for a few of the others to end up leaving.

Look at what happened to Essendon in 2001; after 3 dominant years at the top, they ended up losing Hardwick, Blumfield, Caracella, Heffernan, Moorcroft, and eventually a couple of others too.

I thought we were going after Jonathan Brown?:p

I would'nt be suprised if we were able to pick up one of the Geelong boys, As Chapman said they havent sat down and had a talk about taking pay cuts, so who knows what could happen. Hopefully we can get a ready made defender.

We have enough good midfielders in our team. Judd,Stevens,Murphy,Gibbs,Simpson,Walker etc, in a few years when these players develop, it will be hard to keep those guys in the salary cap. No need to draft anymore midfielders. All we need is one solid back man. If we can get our hands on a solid back man, it will solve both our backline problems and our forward line problems. We then can probably throw Waite into the forward line, with Fisher,Fev,special K,Betts and maybe throw in Holouhan etc.

There's a lot of players who will be coming out of contract at the end of this year. It's the ones that our still out of contract at trade time, that'll be the real interest. We're going to need to give up something good, to get something good this year, not freebies.

Mate if some said we could get JB I am happy to start tanking now LOL

Carlton's focus must be on developing and improving its young list, more than likely it will have the opportunity of selecting some good young talent in a strong draft again later this year.

We got Judd this year giving away young talent , l do not believe it is the answer to go down this path again, we should be following the direction Hawthorn decided to go down five years ago, the days are gone when you can buy success, we must focus on developing a successful team.

WTF? Youngish Top-shelf talent gamebreakers become available and you would not consider giving away a speculative youngster/pick? While I doubt any of those players will sign elsewhere, a Ablett Jnr or Bartell would be an absolute godsent.
