Ben Cousins will undergo minor surgery later today to repair a spiral fracture in the metacarpal bone of his left hand.

The injury was sustained in the opening minutes of Richmond’s loss to Port Adelaide yesterday.

“It was an extraordinary effort for Ben to play out the remainder of the match after being hurt so early,” Richmond Football Operations Manager Ross Monaghan said.

“We are hopeful he will only be out for one match.”

Cousins went on to collect 24 possessions (including 10 contested) and was among the Tigers’ best players.

Cousins was playing his second game in the seniors since returning from a hamstring injury sustained in round one.

Richmond suffered no other injury concerns from the Port Adelaide match.

This is just BS !!

He would have loved the big stage on sat night and we would have loved him there.

I guess it gives someone else a chance.

My guess is slops to come in against his old team and rough a few of them up.

They are a team that can be physically intimidated - they are quick but soft.

AHHHHH!!!! FFS, Poor guy! :(.. i was really looking forward to see him live against essendon while i wore my cousins gurnsey.. :(.. Speedy recovery big man.. We love you ;)

Damn it, we really could have used him agianst Essendon this weekend. His form on the weekend was excellent and was hoping he would improve agian this week. Guess not...Get well soon!

actually saw on tv when he injured it in a contest. he was clutching it straight after. but he played on so i thought it may have been just a sprained finger or something which went away.

great committment by cuz to play out the game

poor guy man, just as he looked that he was starting to get going... stopped in his tracks again... man i hope he stays another year at least after this year... just show the young players what its all about to be elite!

No chance. he's a great but he's finished. he was bougth to bring a boost and he did. He won't be an effective 20 game player next season and playing 30 plusers this year is a waste of time

It is not a waste to play Cousins. There is so much that our young players can learn from him. He brings leadership and class, which is something that we're sorely lacking. Guys like Cotchin will benefit so much by playing at his side.

He wasn't as clean by hand on Sunday as he is at his best...did a great job to get through by the sounds of it.

Huge shame he won't get to experience the biggest game on our home and away calendar.

Was reported, Cousins broke his hand in the first 10 minutes of the match. He played the rest of the game with the broken hand.....what a trooper! I reckon he would have been very good against us this weekend, shitty run of luck.
