I was talking with a friend at Uni today, and he mentioned something that didn't even occur to me. He reckons Cousins peaked last year. Naturally i argued he's only 23 and he'll still improve, but he said that Cousins 2001 season was so good it is unlikely he will improve much, if at all.

Anyone agree? Could cousins have played at such a high standard that it is impossible to play better? I know he didn't win the brownlow, nor is considered to be in the class of Voss, McLoed or Hird. But take into consideration he played that well in a hopeless team which won only 5 games. If he had put in that season with a top 8 team he would have won the Brownlow by a record margin.

Could it be, Cousins has peaked?

HAHAHAHA!!!Cousins peaked? Surely not..I believe his own performance will improve when the team as a whole does! Then we will see him win a brownlow and go down as one of the greats in history! He wont get much better but he will be better than he has before!

Gawd, hope not, that's for damn sure. He was great in his Rising Star year and then (from memory) dropped a notch the year after, when he was targeted for a hard time and got a couple of injuries as well. But he came back, as we all know, so he can do it again

And in any event, did we ever see Lewis get back to his circa 1990 finals best? Or did Roo ever match his 1992 GF performance? Maybe, maybe not, but they were still bloody handy players with flashes of brilliance

I dont think he's peaked just yet - he still has some improving on his disposal to do and a few minor things to his game. A player like Nathan Buckley IMO has reached his peak and played consistantly at that level for a number of years now.

Very good though he is, there's lots to achieve still and I'm sure he'll be working on it! (eg Premiership medallion, his kicking into the forward line, several best and fairests, a few more AA selections.....)

Good point brought up there, we all know that last season Cousins played to an exceptional level... I think he can definetely improve some aspects of his game and even if he doesnt have a year like last year, he'll do enough damage to still be one of our best players week in week out

Please tell your mate that he is definately wrong on that statement.

Ben Cousins still has to improve a lot more before he can win the Brownlow.

He will improve this year. If he is a big improver he could possibly win his team's best and fairest award.

Not a chance....cmon think about.

  • Death of a close friend
  • All the drug allegations
  • The forays forward? Which im not convinced are working.
  • Still too early after just 2 games.

He'll come back strong, i remember listening to one of the so called experts talk about Cousins chance at the brownlow this year. The expert (cant remember who) said he needs at least 5 or 6 BOG's and needs a few other good games that will get votes and he needs WC to win around 8-10 games this season for him to have a shot.

That IMO can happen. Lets reserve our judgement on Cuz till after the Bulldogs game. If he has 3 bad ones in a row then we may be in trouble. Although he actually played alright against the Dockers, 29 posessions and a goal.

Wouldn't worry too much about Cousins, Licca does this to most gun midfielders every week. He destroyed Akermanis, West and Mcleod last year (just to name a few) and Cuz won't be the last midfielder he stops in his tracks. He'll be back...

Stopped in his tracks?

He had 20 posessions, second for West Coast behind only Jako's 21. He also kicked a goal. Wouldnt say thats exactly stopped would you?

I think that seeing Cuz had an exceptional year last year, the onus is on him to follow it up again this year. I also think he is more of a target this year by opposing clubs too, and this is the time for the others to step up and help him out.

This man is yet to peak and still will be a champion for many years to come...
