Cousins' statement

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

It was a nice read from an auto cue which was prepared by lawyers. Basically Cousins said nothing and was an arrogant puppet with a cheesy grin on his face. Inside he does not beleive he has done anything wrong. Shouldn' t be allowed near an AFL ground until he actually acknowledges (honestly) what he has done. It seems that everything the WCE do is a joke

See my previous post.

Of course he read a prepared statement. What were you hoping for, a tearful mea culpa and for him to bare his throat to the media horde? Get real.

Your annoyance stems from the fact that you've been denied a blood sport. Your comments about who prepared the statement, what Cousins believes and what the West Coast Eagles do as a club is merely your unsupported opinion.

Here is my spin

''I am here tonight to set the record straight on a few issues that have affected my personal and professional life. Let me first thank my family for their continued loving support and I truly hope they can continue to support me.

I also want to thank the West Coast Eagles Football Club for their support as well and to let them know I will be back as soon as I can to help this marvellous team win another premiership.

I want to thank my sponsors and friends for their calls of support and I know who you all are and I will never forget

It has been alleged I have a substance abuse problem and I am here to confirm that is the case. What that consists of will stay private and I hope you respect my privacy in dealing with this matter. I accept these issues have affected my professional life and accept that the WCE have made choices in regards to my playing future. My concern is with getting myself over my issues and becoming a better person.

I would like to ask the media to respect my privacy and to let me take the time in rehab without the intrusion of cameras and continous questions and interruptions.

Once again thanks to all the supporters who stuck by me, I know you all want the best for me and so do I , and I will be back kicking goals for the WCE

Oh and yeah sorry , so there you go ''
Official statement from the AFL website... I did ok :D

As you are aware I have been at an overseas rehabilitation centre for the past month undergoing treatment for a number of personal issues, including illness as the result of substance use.

My treatment is an ongoing process, and I have many challenges ahead of me that I need to overcome as part of my recovery to full health.

I will continue my treatment in Perth as an outpatient for at least the next four weeks. Part of that treatment will require me from time to time to leave Perth. I will act on the advice of my medical support team.

I look at this very positively and recognise that I have been privileged to have been given this opportunity.

I apologise to the West Coast Eagles Football Club, sponsors, the AFL and the community for my actions.

I am sorry that I have disappointed many people who have supported me in the past.

I want to acknowledge the tremendous support I have received from my family, the West Coast Eagles Football Club and many others.

I know that in order to play football again I will have to be accepted back by the players and staff of the West Coast Eagles and the AFL and I’m willing to fulfill any obligations imposed on me.

At the present time I don’t know when I’ll play again. My priority is to regain my health, my life and my family.

I want to thank the community at large for their support their encouragement and understanding which has assisted me and been very much appreciated

I would like everyone, if they can, to respect my privacy whilst I continue treatment and meet the significant challenges that lie ahead.

I'm aware that people would say the same thing about his statement no matter what.

But what would he have said to please you all?

I only heard a bit, but he sounded sincere

It was what everyone expected and nothing more.

The guy honestly has to get himself right now, lets hope he actually realises his health is more important than football and he doesn't rush back.

How could he possibly sound sinsear (sic) reading text from an auto-cue? It was a professional production rather than any sort of personal statement. I just wish he'd been wearing that lovely new cap.

But what whould he have said to please you all?

Fair question.

If Cousins had said something along the lines of-

"I'm here tonight to apologise to the entire world, but specifically the bigfooty community, which has been grievously affected by low, loathsome, despicable and downright horrifically sick, twisted acts of sheer perverted bastardry. I feel an ongoing sense of horror and self loathing.

I urge the AFL to suspend me for several seasons, at the conclusion of which I hereby undertake to present myself at Federation square with my head in stocks and my pants around my ankles, so I can better feel the shame of my actions.

I encourage all right-thinking AFL fans, media and officials to attend this gathering, and take the opportunity to paddle my swollen ass. Also, I undertake to send my sister, mother and other assorted family members around to every bigfooty poster's house, to quell the raging hardons which all opposition fans now carry for me, and in some small way compensate for the grief, embarassment and torture I have inflicted on the footballing world."

-there would still be a majority saying it was a smarmy scripted affair required by the club.

You forgot the final line "and finally, secretly i agree with everything Parrot says"

I've been one of the few from other clubs supporting him, but geez, how about a collar and tie?
Not the metro nightclub top.

I thought the same. Loves showing off the chest. Might find himself in the wrong sort of calendar next year if he doesn't watch it.

My wife and I watched it together and she is not much a football followere, but she took the angle, "what if it was one of our sons". "I would expect him to make a genuine public apology rather than a staged one. It would just give him more credibility and most fair minded people would say, well that was heartfelt and they would more likely then respect his privacy, and think well, he has been caught up in the horrible drug scene, now let him get on with his rehabilitation".
