Right..so because someone died he can do drugs..yep that is up there with the most stupid comment ever. By all means mourn the loss but there are plenty of other ways to get over it rather than do drugs! He is definitely a gun footballer however it is just whether his problems are fixable, and no-one can say yes or no.

It wasn't such a stupid comment and if you ignore all of the hype and listen to those who KNOW Ben Cousins you will find that Chris Mainwaring's death had a huge impact on his state of mind and condition. I am not sure if you are aware of this but addicts have such things called relapses which can be triggered most certainly by the death of a family member or close friend. All of his drug tests were negative from the time that he signed the zero tolerance aggreement with WC so one would assume that he had not strayed up until that stage. I am fed up with all of this talk about when and where will Cousins play footy again. Who cares?!?! Let's all be more concerned about the guy getting the treatment he needs and wishing him well for the future. I can only hope that the media will do the right thing and let him be so that his family can help him get his life back together.

Good luck BC!

If West Coast end up sacking Ben Cousins would you want to draft him? Well after he gets out of jail.

As a side note does anyone think Kepler wants to get back to Perth so badly because he feels like he's missing out??

I guess he would feel more at home with your supporters.!

It was actually a very attuned comment.

Stress is just about the most common cause of relapse when still recovering from addiction.

Mainwaring's death, from all reports, was taken very hard by Cousins. It isn't uncommon for people recovering to go back to their old ways when these sort of things occur.

It is true that no one can say yes or no as to whether his problems are fixable, but experiences of others can give a fair indication of the time frame for Cousins' recovery, should it be successful. It would be years, not months. Given he can't really be playing football in that time, at Cousins' age, his career is surely over.

This all probably would have been avoided if he went through a complete 4 month rehab program, not a 3 week patch job. Blame the WCE and Ben for thinking a premiership is more important than his health!

Whilst a 4 month rehabilitation program would've been far better than a 3 week program, rehabilitation is a far bigger process than that. It usually takes years.

I think a number of us, me included, where a little naive about the whole issue. I think we assumed that Cousins would get over this, and quickly. However, it was always likely that something like this would happen. Rehabilitation has once again been proved to be much more than a slap dash thing.

Are you serious? It was an absolute lock. With that smarmy grin :o, there's no way he even believed he had done something wrong.

I saw this coming a mile off. I wouldn't be surprised if he jumps bail and never comes back from rehab. Remember this is the bloke who ran away from a booze-bus and left his girlfriend to face the music!!! Why would you bail somebody like that?

I didn't believe that he thought he had done something wrong.

I did believe that he'd pull himself in check for a while, I thought he had a strong enough personality to do that.

Finally a drug story I can comment on with some (small) authority. I do not take illegal drugs and so know nothing about them except through friends but I do take the drug that Cousins was found to have on him. Granted he was not able to produce a valid prescription for them, but please believe me on this - Valium (and its many exactly the same generic substitutes) is not a drug to get high with. It is a muscle relaxant and is used for a number of purposes including sports injuries (though it is hardly performance enhancing), giving birth, back pain, ... and ... the most common precription is for anxiety and a depressive innability to cope with life.

I have been prescribed the drug myself for anxiety which I hate to use as it just shits me to tears that I can't deal with things myself without drugs sometimes; and for a back complaint which I love because it takes away a great deal of the pain, and by that time I can barely move anyway. So, anyway, that is my reason for understanding the drug.

So let me say that it enables you to feel something closer to normal when everything is just going to shit or everything seems too much. If one of my friends had just died my first thought would be for their family, my second would be to reach for a drink, and without wanting to, I would probably resort to Valium for a few days - though not while drinking.

It is a coping drug. that is all. Large quantities of it can kill you if untreated - ususally through suffocation, but otherwise it does not really do much else. This is not a drug for junkies even though it is highly addictive - which is another reason why I hate the damn thing.

I have known many, many people who are on the drug and I would simply say that the removal of it from a patient who is used to it can trigger thoughts of suicide and self-destructive behaviour. It should always be used under supervision and dosages should be managed.

The bottom line for me is that had Cousins had a script for the drug, this would not be a problem. As it is, I understand. Poor bastard. He really needs help and I hope he gets it otherwise his career is not all he stands to lose. Prescription and non-prescription drugs and alcohol do NOT mix.

I'm pretty sure Cousins can afford to pay his own bail. :p

It seems that for someone with such authority you missed one very important point. Valium is commonly taken (without prescription) as a party downer drug, meaning its what you take when you are coming down from a buzz. What Cousins had them for (if in fact he even had them at all) is debatable but it is important to note all of the uses of such a drug.

The drug he was on is also commonly used to reduce withdrawal symptoms of harder drugs like cocaine. No one knows the truth though.

I love how most of you (along with WC and the AFL) have stoned this guy without the charges being investigated. The prohibited substance he had on his possession was diazepam. A bloody vallium. Gee I hope they don't search our houses or about 4 million Australians could be arrested and sacked from their jobs. This is a farce. Cousins is a recovering addict, yes. He's off to complete the second phase of his rehab. The police will have egg on their face at the end of this court proceeding because diazepam was part of his treatment. It is not a recreational drug. Would I have him at our club. Damn right. Super player.

Very true, I did 'miss' that point, but also made the discalimer that I have no knowledge of the illegal drug scene. And you are also right, in this dicussion it is worth having all the uses of the drug pointed out. So, thanks.

So what do you say about the FACT that he refused a blood test?

There is plenty of illegal use of "downers" and i'm sure the other 4 million you talk about the majority of them would be on prescription.

IF he comes to our club i will be joining a rebel group, similar to save essendon, except with a clue.

It still would have increased his chances of rehab. WCE needed to say to Be.."yes we'll pay you but you go to the rehab clinic for 4 months, then you prepare for the 2008 season". Would it have worked, who knows, it sure as heck has a better chance of success than a patch job though!

Can't believe we would think about getting Cousins. I'm all for rehab, hope the guy recovers, goes on to live a long, fruitful and successful life after footy...

But he's not the kind of bloke you want around a footy club with a load of young players.

They say the Vallium was a part of his rehab, well I say: no, no, no.

If there were 4 million Ben Cousinses in Australia, the whole place would grind to a halt. It would be like living in Escape From New York.

Oh, and one more thing ... recovering???

Spot on! Had he supplied the test he would have been as high as a kite!

More importantly I am sure they will give him the full wack after the booze bus incident a few years ago.

No chance he will come to the dons.

Yep, everyone is holier than thow!

No doubt he was targetted by the cops because of his profile and because they were made to look stupid when he evaded the breatheliser.

P.S - 4 million vallium prescriptions are written each year.

Doesnt mean there are 4 million people on valium, and it doesnt mean that all of these are being used as 'drug downers'

Amazing.

People complain that we take Campo, Allan, Michael etc but would welcome with open arms a 30 year old drug and alcohol addict who has a history that goes back for years of flouting team rules.

He would be a great role model for our young kids, get him on board NOW
