Continuing with the musical theme, can you name any cover versions that you think are better than the originals.

For me

1. DEVO's cover of the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction".
2. Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover of The Beatles "Helter Skelter".
3. Siouxsie and Banshees' version of The Beatles "Swimming Horses".
4. Wall of Voodoo's cover of The Beach Boys "Do it Again". Although I like their version as well.
5. The Clouds' version of Glen Campbell's "Witchita Lineman". I'm not sure if Glen's was the original, but it's the most popular version.

The only two I can think of now are:

Jewel's cover of "have a little faith in me"
Van Morrison's cover of "it's all over now baby blue"

There are covers that I like but not as much as the original.

Could give you pages and pages of worst cover

Neil Diamond prefers UB40s version of Red, red wine to his own, and now usually performs the song with a reggae beat during his live shows.

The Petshop Boys covers of Always on my mind and Where the streets have no name are sufficiently different from the original to defy comparison.

There are countless dance covers of great pop songs. Among the better ones are Eastside Beat's Ride like the wind, and two by the same mob (can't remember the name at the moment) - California Dreamin and Without You.

Pearl Jam's version of 'Rockin' In The Free World'. So many bands cover Neil Youngs song, but he admits that PJ's version is the best.

The Hitman

Whitney Houston's version of that Dolly Parton Classic

I will Always Love You

This is only so because the original was so bad.

There's a cover of the Beatles Elanor Rigby which is very good but I forget who does it.

John Farnhams version of "Its a Long Way to the TOop" - well, maybe not.

I prefer Gary Moore's Friday on My Mind to the Original.

Smash Mouth - I'm a Believer comes close to the Monkey's original.

Can anyone tell me who sung You'll Never Walk Alone first - or was it a hymn. I prefer Gerry and The Pacemakes Version.

The Hitman

The only cover of that song i've heard was on Bon Jovi's One Night Live and it was pretty good, but as I said, haven't heard anyone else's versions.

My favourite covers are Great White's version of Once Bitten, Twice Shy (Ian Hunter), Tesla's Signs (Five Man Electric Band) and Little Suzi (Phd), Def Leppard's Action (The Sweet), Under My Wheels (Alice Cooper)
Speaking of Def Lep, I got a CD recently where Joe Elliot and Phil Collen get together with a couple of the original Spider's From Mars and do a concert full of David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust songs, it's great.

Pennywises cover versions of Minor Threat and Down Under kick arse over the originals and yes I know that last one might piss a few people off but tough toothpaste I say.

That is a gun cover. The ****ing Up cover is also pretty good and Oasis have done a gun cover of "Hey Hey, My My"

Oasis' cover of Helter Skelter is better than the original and a cover I've downloaded of Oasis and Eddie Vedder covering Daytripper is very good.

The best covers of all time though are Metallica's covers of Whiskey in a Jar, Turn the Page and Astronomy

Henry Rollins and the Hard On's do a kick arse version of "Let there be Rock". I think that was an AC/DC tune, and as good as they are I can't see them topping it.

And there is also Bananarama's versions of Venus and Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye. God I love Bananarama. Well their early stuff anyway.

I always loved Teenage Fanclub's version of Madonna's "Like A Virgin". The Cadigans would also cover a Black Sabbath song on their CDs too. Frente's acoustic version of New Order's Bizarre Love Triange was brilliant, and for those who adored the Smiths, there's Star's version of "This Charming Man" which is (dare I say it) better than the original.

ill be flamed out of Bigfooty for this but i reckon Alien Ant Farms Smooth Criminal craps over the MJ one....and i love MJ!

Fear Factorys version of Dog Day Sunrise craps over the original too.

other than that there arent many other cover versions around that arebetter than the original.

Hazy shade of Winter by Bodyjar. (Simon & Garfunkle)

Kids in Australia (America) by Game Over (Kym Wilde)

Any song covered by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

Guns of Brixton by Unwritten Law (The Clash)

Home and Away theme song by Frenzal Rhomb

Sesame Street theme song by Game Over

Territorial Pissings by Pennywise (Nirvana - they only played in live at offshore, but it's the closest I'll ever come to Nirvana live, and it went OFF!)
