WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Craig Sholl

By JACKIE EPSTEIN

CRAIG Sholl only wanted to play for one year to gain some respect in Echuca. But he is in his third year with the club after moving north when he retired from the Kangaroos.

"You get sucked in by it a bit," Sholl said.

"One thing with the country people is they just love their footy.

"I was already here when Todd Viney arrived (in Moama) and there was such a buzz with all the talk around."

Sholl has continued his winning ways by playing in two more premierships with Echuca in the Goulburn Valley Football League.

He said they were just as special as the two flags he won with the Kangaroos.

"It was 15 years of my life that I'd love to keep going, but to win two and play in three (with the Kangaroos) is just great," he said.

"Coming here has been no different and just like winning a flag at North. It's just on a smaller scale."

Sholl planned early for his relocation after buying the Magic Murray Houseboats company six months before he retired.

"Mum and dad live here, and we were all into waterskiing . . . it's a good, little country town," Sholl said.

"I always said I'd never put my kids into school in the city. My wife, Andrea, is from Horsham as well, so she felt the same."

When Sholl first arrived, coach Ken Sheldon played him at centre half-forward, but he has since pushed up into the midfield.

He said it took most of the week to recover and last week he came back from injury in the reserves.

"I'm not a spring chicken any more," he said with a laugh. "But they're all good fellas -- it's a lot more relaxed and a lot of fun."

I have watched about half of the tape from the show on Foxtel on Saturday called Kanga Kings. It just shows what we have missed since he retired. Very hard to match up on with his height, pace and terrific ball skills. Although not as tall lets just hope Corey Jones can develop into a consistent performer like him.
Craig Sholl was a class act.

Remember Craig Sholl Last game. It was against Melbourne in the 2000 Preliminary Final were we got thumped and Sholl kicked 7 goals and was by far the best for North Melbourne that night.

I was thinking the same... I hope Corey Jones can become the second forward behind Drew Petrie.

I was a doubter at the start of the season, but his last month has been excellent. He's moving around the ground a lot more and improved his kicking at goal.

Regarding Sholl - what a great decision by Pagan to move him to the forward line. He was a wingman, then a backman. I thought he was almost gone, but with his clean hands at marking, and booming 60m kicks at goal he was the perfect addition to Carey/McKernan up forward.

And wasn't Winston Abraham great on the Kanga Kings highlights... Allison/Abraham's role is a bit like Harding. But Harding is a better lead and mark, where the other guys seemed to be better crumbers.

Fruity was the perfect case of being in the right place at the right time. Our forward structure suited him perfectly and he did the job well.

Isn`t funny to think now that Petrie couldn`t get a game in the ones because he was only considered a ruckman. I`d love to see him make CHF his own for the next decade.

Winston was pure class as a footballer, sublime foot skills. Didn't get as many opportunities at goal as Harding does, but then again he wasn't really a crumber IMHO... seemed to get a lot of goals on the run from handball receives or loose gathers. Then again, not much to crumb when a guy like Carey hangs on to so many marks.

Harding probably has to play closer to goals, and closer to the the marking targets than Winston did - Winston was deadly from the 40-50 metre range.

The other thing that was noticable on that 99 highlights vid was Gary Dhurkkay. Gees he knew how to take his opportunities inthe forward 50. Its a bugger he decided to go walk about instead of persuing his footy career. Had so much potential that bloke.

Also, its funny how the common perception of Corey McKernan was that he was more or less useless after 96. I've always argued strongly against this, and that video was further proof. Was named best or in the bests plenty that year, and IMO was THE reason (along with Capuano - ironically another maligned player) we won the 99 GF.

I can see where people got that perception. Watch any centre bounce.;) I agree with your point though Carlos. Corey was one of the top ranked in contested marks that year from memory. He more than kept his keep.

Funny that Winston's name came up. Last night while cooking dinner, I put on an old video - Rd 14, 1998 v Essendon. Kingy's 100th and the game in which Timmy Watson asked Ian Robertson if he thought that the Kanga's thought that Essendon were soft. Well anyway, Winston took another gun mark and just cruised around the forward line. He was an absolute gun, who unfortunately didn't make the most of his talent. But when he was on song - well heck me...

i wonder what would of happened if winnie had had a proper knee reconstruction and not that ligament regrowth experiment they tried.

never heard anyone else ever trying that that method again

From memory he had a pretty bad injury which wasn't just ligamentous. I think he had some bad bone damage which may have needed a graft.

Sometimes you can just **** up a joint, and no surgery is ever going to get it back to AFL level. Of course I don't put it that way to my patients :)

Archer is truly remarkable. I was operating with a hand surgeon (not his though) around the time of the injury who commented on how badly he injured that hand. How he's playing so well I have no idea!

After this game Sheedy accused of North Melbourne of calling Essendon Soft and started calling North Melbourne, Greg Miller and Geoff Walsh marshmallows. But revenge was good and the next time we played Essendon in the First week of the finals and we won that game and Essendon lost and season finished aftr that night, but the best was yet to come and marshmallows were thown to Sheedy as he was alking towards the Esssendon race after the game

And Sheedy took it like a man. He never shirked from walking along the boundary line, and there was a hail of marshmellows from the Southern Stand.

Melbourne apparently sold out of marshmellows that day! One of my all time favourite matches. (I wish I had it on video. Or that someone here would lend me the tape so I could run off a copy).

Why did he retire? Did he get pushed? To kick 7 goals in your last game and be best on ground is a good effort in a losing team.

Post 2000-2005 we needed to fit quality players like Olarenshaw, Hay, Piccioane and Calthorpe into our rebuild and salary cap to take us to the land of...

****ING NOTHING!

I used to have a pair of these things. They were great to wear after training or competing.
