Over inside of three days. Maybe I am looking for a scapegoat but Michael Clarke, it is time to go.

I cannot remember 1956 but this has all the hallmarks of the Old Trafford humiliation in 1956.

Piss poor effort - no more to be said.

Only 2 of our batsmen faced 20 balls or more - Johnson 25 and Lyon 20. Clarke, Nevill and Hazlewood faced 15 each - nobody else faced more than 8. It's a performance that even the Redbacks would be ashamed of.

Maybe worse. Like you I would not be aware of how poorly the Aussies batted in 1956 but a lot was made of how good Laker was. Remember that he took 19 wickets in the match while the other spinner, Tony Lock, bowled 69 overs in the match for 1 wicket. And although there were a lot of ducks and single figure scores Australia did not succumb to bad shots initially getting to 48 and 28 for the first wicket respectively. That series cost Ian Johnson his place.
The second innings will tell what kind of effort it was, in Old Trafford the first innings was over in 40.4 overs, 30 bowled by Laker and Lock. But it was 150.2 in the second with Laker and Lock bowling 106.2.

Dropping a captain during a series is not the way to go; he has had 11 innings since a 50 but both he and a lot of captains before him have had dry spells and then come back.

Clarke has to see the tour out. The series is kaput so no need to wreck such a wonderful player like that.

Even if he doesn't retire, he will be sacked as captain. He came close to losing his job before the Phil Hughes incident but he is finished now.

Q: What's the difference between the Australia Cricket Team and Cilla Black?
A: Cilla managed to get to 72.

Two good half centuries last night... One from Joe Root and the other from Australia.

I think I heard last night that this is the first time, in Ashes history, that Extras/Sundries was the top score.

Then I get this from my cousin in Nottingham first thing this morning

Last night was arguably one of the weakest Aussie batting efforts in test history, it was absolutely f****** pathetic, and heads will have to roll.
At least 3 or 4 of the `batsmen ' who succumbed last night should never ever wear the baggy green again.

The selectors need a ring kicking for sending that half baked squad to blighty as well, f****** useless campaigners!

I am not saying ditch Clarke mid series but at the end of the series that is about it for Pup.

Some say that Lock bowled better than Laker at Old Trafford but did not get the wickets. I can remember the return series in Australia when P.B.L. May lead the poms. England was supposed to wipe the floor with Australia but a different Captain in Richie Benaud and a few inclusions made all the difference.

I do not have a problem with Clarke's poor form as he is a class batsman and possibly still has a season or two. I do not have a problem with his on field tactics which are still sound. My main bitch is his off field leadership which from all reports is non existent. Clarke is tainted with the Mickey Arthur brush and he needs to go. I guess all the experts will point to Steve Smith but I am not sure he has the personality. Australia does not need a nice guy. It needs someone who will support the Coach, get the players on track and playing together. Clarke inherited the job because he was from NSW and there was no one else, I hope the same formula does not equal Steve Smith.

I suppose this means that Watson will be recalled for the next Test?

More than one of the commentators was saying that Australia did not have the right spread of bowlers. That said, they had 3 pace bowlers and a spinner which is what England had. The lack of an all-rounder showed itself up a bit more in this test because of the very few runs to chase and that the English batsmen, apart from applying themselves, had a bit of luck at crucial times; eg Cook dropped and Bairstow french cut.

Plus trying to match one of the great Test spells of all time was always going to be mission impossible. It's not every day you see 8 for 15 - how about a bit of credit where it's due.

Yeah I know - it's Broad: I don't like giving him any credit either :-)

The question of matching the effort never came up, in fact LLoyd, Healy, Warne and Slater were at pains to point out that Australia shouldn't be trying that, they should just be hoping to limit the damage and maybe get back into it with a 100+ deficit and a good second innings.

The point they were making was that whereas England didn't need a balanced bowling attack because of the freak circumstances, Australia did. It might be interesting to see what happens when Australia bats again. Although often teams under pressure of a huge weight of runs collapse. I'm sure that was part of the reason for England's dismal second innings at Lords.

Good joke but don't repeat it if you go to England, Cilla Black was one of their most-loved celebrities. Could use Roddy Piper, who made it to 61.
Did you see him at the cricket yesterday with Hulk Hogan?

If you ignore yesterday it's an entertaining morning. Great yorker bowled by Starc. Ian Healy as incoherent as ever.
