Australia came away with a 2-1 series defeat which is probably a whole lot better than it looked after the Delhi debacle. I was envisaging a 4-0 whitewash. The problem is that CA will look at that result and think, 1-2 is not too bad. They will ignore the planning and selection fiascos that took place. These included-

  • No match practice between the 3rd Test against South Africa on Jan 8th and the 1st Test in India on Feb 9th.
  • Selecting Starc, Green and Hazlewood all of who were injured when the tour started.
  • Not selecting Travis Head in Nagpur
  • Selecting only one fast bowler in Delhi.
Given the circumstances it is hard to post this but there was a definite improvement when Pat Cummins was forced to leave the tour. There has been a lot of focus on Australia's batting but the fact is Cummins, Starc and Boland took 5/285 between them while for India Mahommed Shami took 9/254. Shami showed that it was still possible for a pace bowler to cause problems on the spin friendly decks.
I have no doubt that the captaincy has affected Cummins' bowling somewhat. But the selectors will undoubtedly back him to captain the side in England, which worries me a bit.

After this last game, Steve Smith was like "If it wasn't for that second innings at Delhi and the ridiculously flat pitch here, it could've been a different story..."

What's worse? A pitch where the game only lasts 3 days, or a pitch where only 22 wickets fall across the full 5?
Five day tame roads that lead to draws are seen as worse for Test cricket as a spectacle than bowler paradise green tops and dustbowls.

Even on the flattest of Test wickets, scoring is normally pretty sedate. So these end up being long, long days of boredom where nothing much happens. People don't pay attention, and come back an hour later and barely notice any change.

On the dustbowls and lightly rolled out fields, the bowling side are constantly appealing for dismissals, there's a lot of almost wickets. So there actually appears to something going on. Its basically T20 if you enjoy bowling.

Now that we know what he has been dealing with off-field I'm gonna give him a blank slate to see what he's capable of against bazball.

No matter how professional we want to be there is no way it wouldn't have affected his ability.

Great post.

To take a really simple bird's eye view of things, it was like rather than do actual preparation and lead up matches, we used those first two matches to settle, before being competitive in the third and fourth.

You can't afford to do that at this level. The damage was already done before the third test started.

I do not blame the players alone for a tour that started out as a shambles. Cricket Australia has to take criticsm for agreeing to a tour that gave the players no chance of being fully prepared for the toughest tour on the cricketing calendar.

That's a fair call. His motivation to be an Ashes winning captain will be huge.

Looking like Victoria will play WA in the Shield final - Queensland are struggling big time against Tassie, while the Vics are well on top of WA. Even if Vic don't win outright, they should pick up enough bonus points to pass Qld.

You have to admire Scott Boland - sitting on his bum for most of the India tour, pops back to Aus and wrecks the ladder leading WA batting line-up.

Jake Lehmann makes a sporting declaration 136 behind. The Blues responded with 3/247 leaving the Redbacks less than a day to get 386.

Redbacks are 2/78 still 308 in arrears. We have seen this scenario before.
There's more chance of Eddie McGuire barracking for Geelong tonight.

Different era, and back when Sheffield Shield cricket actually meant something, but I can recall Ian Chappell virtually brow beating the then NSW captain ( Doug Walters?) into a declaration which resulted in SA getting the chocolates back in the mid 70's, and also David Hookes teeing off on more than one occasion about `unsporting' declarations by both NSW and the Vics.

I also remember reading something about him having an altercation with Geoff Lawson in a game at Adelaide oval due to what he saw as a tardy declaration.

Yes, on one occasion SA Captain David Hookes had a very public verbal stoush with Henry Lawson the NSW Captain. Hookes made a sporting declaration and Lawson did not respond. Hooksey was not happy. I can remember KG Cunningham, being all over it on the AA Sports Show.

These SA 'sporting' declarations go back to the days of Les Favel and it was he who influenced the likes of Ian Chappell. Of course KG Cunningham was another of the Les Favel brood.

Match drawn.

If anyone cares, India won the toss in the first ODI, and elected to bowl.

I have to say Mitch Marsh batted well but that is all one can say about an otherwise dismal performance.

Why is Alex Carey not in this side? Carey made his name in ODI cricket and has 1600 runs at 35 with a century and 7 scores above 50. I was not not all that impressed when Philippe dropped a catch he should have taken then proceeded to walk around with a smirk on his face. Unless Carey is injured we have to assume that Philippe will be first choice keeper for the World Cup in India later this year.

Inglis?

Kane Williamson (and Nicholls) tearing Sri Lanka another new one - NZ 2/465, with KW just bringing up a double century, HN on 136.
4 for 580 declared - Nicholls 200 not out.

Wow, what is happening in India. Australia are humiliated in the first ODI then return the favour by humiliating India in the second match.

India all out 117 and Australia 0/121 in reply.

Mitchell Marsh on fire as a opener.

Meant to be a 50 over game, Aussies got the required runs off 11.

Massive call here.

Rahul Dravid should know what he is talking about but I would not exactly call Swann and Panesar all time greats.

Monty Panesar only took 16 wickets against Australia at 53.64 while Graeme Swann took 62 wickets at 39.98. Hardly great figures.

Three of Australia’s T20 World Cup champions, along with several other white-ball superstars, have signed on for the inaugural Major League Cricket tournament in the United States, which gets underway in July.

During the MLC Player Draft on Monday AEDT, former Australian captain Aaron Finch was announced as captain of the San Francisco Unicorns, where he will be joined by overseas signing Marcus Stoinis.

Meanwhile, the Seattle Orcas have secured the services of Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who smacked an unbeaten 66 (36) during Sunday evening’s ODI against India. Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade is also reportedly expected to join Team Texas.

Just what the world needs....another meaningless hit and giggle tournament!!

I think he was referring to what they were able to do in India.
