So Australia win the First test by 159 runs thanks to some resistance by Head, Webster and Carey and some good bowling headed by a five wicket haul from Josh Hazelwood. The Second Test starts on Thursday and all eyes are on the selection panel.

Shamar Joseph allegations sound incredibly serious with reported evidence. Strange it doesnt seem to have been picked up as of yet in a major ways by other networks: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wi...al-assault-arrest-australia-1751097886747/amp

As always, innocent until proven guilty, but these crimes are sickening and he has no place in society, let alone cricket if he committed them.

Edit: its being reported by a few places but I have no idea on the veracity of those outlets.

Interesting that there is nothing in the mainstream media. This story seems to be all over the Carribean news feeds but nowhere else. ESPN Cricinfo do not have the story.

Apparently no charges have been laid and the alleged victims have hired their own legal counsel to press for charges. The story originated in a South American newspaper.

I believe Shamar Joseph is from Guyana which is the only part of the West Indies that is on mainland South America, which may be why the story originated in a South American newspaper.

If the allegations have any basis in fact you would think at the very least it would have to end his cricket career!

Another middle of the road performance from Australia. The top order failed to fire again. Australia all out for 286.

Carey and Webster the mainstays-again.

Once again it is up to the bowlers to keep Australia in the match.

Geez the TV coverage of this tour is lamentable.

At least it's on ESPN if you have Foxtel.

4 down for bugger all again and saved by the bottom half of the batting line up.

I put some stats up from the cricket board, before the Indian series started last summer and how bad the batting had been for the previous 8 tests and how many times we had been 4 for bugger all.

This is now another 10 tests on and not much has changed.

I've been looking at highest batting averages the last few days.

Ignoring Voges who didn't bat 40 times like Pollock and Headley, after Bradman, 3 have an average of 60;
Pollock 60.97
Headley 60.83
Suttcliffe 60.73

I usually forget the 2nd decimal place but remember the 60.9,60.8 and 60.7 order.

Then there are 3 who average 58.xx and like the 4 players above, all played test cricket before 1970. I usually remember them in alphabetic order rather than correct numbers order.
Barrington 58.67
Weekes 58.62
Hammond 58.48

Harry Brook's average is in the 58's but I'm ignoring it as he is early into his career.

Next is Sobers on 57.78. So 8th on the averages list of played in 40+ innings or 9th if you include Harry Brooks.
Sobers played 93 tests and batted 163 times.

Its hard to keep up as modern players get purple patches and get around a 60 average eg Ponting, Smith, and Labuschagne and they have advantage over pre 1990's guys as fields now are smaller, the rope rather than fence is the boundary, bigger bats, less bouncers per over, better wickets, new weaker teams like Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Ireland and Zimbos have been decimated and West Indies have fallen on hard times, and post 9/11 Pakistan rarely play at home.

So a lot more batters are finishing their careers with an average of 50 plus who have played at least 40 test innings. Ignoring Harry Brooks, the number is 35 and 16 have played test cricket this century and another 3 have played a lot of tests between 1985 and 1995.

So the trade off seems to be its easier to get a career 50 average, but its harder to stay at the top of the averages as careers are a lot longer, players last into their late 30's and their last few years see them decline, some players a bit, eg Tendulkar some a lot eg Potting had an average of 60 after 108 tests but ended up 5 years later with 51.85 after 168 tests.

If you look at the 3 highest averages after Sobers retired in 1974 it is:
Sangakkara 57.41 - 134 tests 233 innings
Smith...... 56.27 118 tests 209 innings. Smith is 36 years old and is near the end. His average hit 64.95 in his 68th test
Kallis....... 55.37 - 166 tests 280 innings

A 2+ run drop after Sobers doesn't sound a lot, but it adds up over 200-250 innings or so, especially if you make a lot of scores between 20 and 40 the last 10-20% of your career, like a lot of great players post 1990 have done.

Sangakkara gets ignored in Oz as we hardly saw him play test cricket in Oz, and most of his games in the sub continent weren't even broadcast in Oz pay TV.

Been watching the Poms v Indians in between both footy games,

Poms started day the at 3/77 off 20 overs - 510 behind the Indians. Root was 18 off 37 balls and Brook 30 of 53.

Siraj in the middle of 22nd over had Root caught behind for 22 and next ball Stokes caught behind for a golden duck and the score was 5/84, Poms still 503 behind. Brook was 31 off 55.

Then wicky Smith comes in and adopts a Gilchrist / Pant/ McCullum / Bazzball attitude.

At Drinks - 32 overs, so 12 bowled in the hour score was 5/160 - 83 runs scored - Smith 49 off 38 and Brook 56 off 80.

Late in the session Smith smashed 22 off a Krishna over, 1 x 6 and 4 x4 and he bowled a wide bouncer at him after he hit for 18, and Smith moved from 70 odd to mid 90's in the over.

At lunch Poms are 5/249 off 47 overs, so 15 overs for 89 runs in the 2nd hour, Smith 102 of 82 balls and Brook 91 off 127.

The Indians are 338 in front but Gill has gone from wonder if he enforces the follow on to thinking if Smith and Brook stick around for another 90 minutes he doesn't have to think about it any more.

India not the same without Bumrah, was surprised they rested him after going down in the first test.
Thinking it must be more than a simple case of resting.

Bumrah rested himself. Gill wanted him to play, but Bumrah said his back was crook, and if he played and bowled 40 or 50 overs he might miss the rest of the tour.

Before the start of last summer's series against Australia, Bumrah had played 41 tests and missed 26 with injuries.

Australia 2/12 with nightwatchman Nathan Lyon scoring as many runs as the Australian opening pair.

Australia lead it by 45. The pitch invader probably spent more time in the middle than either of the Aussie openers :D

I know it was only a 50 over game, but Nathan McSweeney scored an unbeaten 80 odd for Australia A the other day. Have the national selectors stamped his papers NEVER TO BE SELECTED AGAIN?

I think he deserves another chance but not in the opening position.
We need someone who’s an experienced opening batsman.

That was his first innings of any kind since the Shield final. Maybe he felt the need for a refresh - something Tubby Taylor suggested Labuschagne should've thought about. I see the other forgotten man Renshaw got an 80 in the same game.

He and Jason Sangha should have toured. Sangha made a mountain of runs for SA in the Shield winning season. He's from NSW so should be known to selectors.

I get they have made the call to play Konstas opening and Green at #3 so have to give them a decent run in the those spots but these two have the runs on the board in domestic cricket.

If Labuschange doesnt find form next Oz shield season before the Ashes, and McSweeney does, then he should bat at #3 and Green can go back to shield cricket as Beau Waters is deliverying as the allrounder Oz sectors have desperately been searching for 50 years.

Re openers we are going to have to go back ro the well with North and Renshaw I think.

Man - check out that Pommy score card. Six ducks in a score of 407 has to be some sort of record.
LOL Brook 158 and Smith 184, just about scored all their runs.

3 in the top order and the last 3 batsmen got ducks after Brook was out, and the last 4 wickets put on 20

Thats the sort of score the bottom part of Indian batting usually add.

Australia's last 4 wickets have regularly saved the top order in the last 17 tests or more. The Oz top order have been 4/30 odd too many times the last 17 tests.

He needs to score runs to play, and what's the reason he isn't playing county cricket at the moment? Had he had a good start to the county season he could have been a contender for Labuschagne's spot for this current series, with an eye on the Ashes.

McSweeney has done little to put his name forward since getting dropped. Sangha just needs more runs on the board after injury and lacklustre NSW career. Either way it's the top 3 spots that are the main issue.

Oh **** Cameron Green made 52 off 123 deliveries, that will be enough to ensure he bats at no3 in the First Ashes Test.

Australia lead it by 254 with 3 wickets in hand. Alex Carey 26 n.o. and Pat Cummins 4 n.o.

The game is evenly balanced atm but if Australia can push their lead past 300 they have a fighting chance.
