The Slug from Snug is the new Funky Miller. Can bowl both spin and medium pace. I await him dying his hair blue.

That was the shot of a man who is struggling to stand up. Stokes just couldn't move his feet to play that properly.

I thought he should have come in after Carse.

22 year old Jacob Bethell is not as good as these two, but Sachin Tendulkar was 18 in 1992 and made his 2nd test hundred at the SCG new year's test, and 12 months later Brian Lara made his debut test hundred with that magnificent 277 when he was 23.

Bethell showed a lot composure that his older teammates didn't and haven't this series, and was pretty calm in the 90's as he approached his first century in his first class career . He then kept batting so well when he could have said well I've done my bit and gotten out trying to up the tempo.

Can see him playing for a decade and making at least half the runs his hero Joe Root has made - ie around 7,000 test runs.

Oz are odds on favourites, but if Bethell can make another 50 or 60 and the 2 tailenders make 15 or 20 each and the lead gets out to 200, it could be a very interesting day 5 tomorrow.

A certain Crows fan on the match thread has taken great delight in noting that England's lead at stumps is 119.

Should have been Slug and Murphy in hindsight. Whatever runs Green would get over Murphy would be offset by the impact Murphy may have had today and tomorrow holding down an end and making things tricky.
Agree

That post was made prior to the first test - should have had Beau all series, bloke has a 38 average right now.

Australian selectors have been looking for a replacement for Keith Miller and Richie Benaud for over 60 years now.

Too true. Australia's search for a genuine all rounder has gone on for decades. Australia has had a few bowlers who could bat a little such as Alan Davidson and plenty of batsman who could bowl a little such as Greg Chappell but we have struggled to find that genuine all rounder.

Shane Watson was possibly the closest we have come however Watson played his career in two halves. The first was as a pace bowler and the second as an opening batsman.

I do like the look of Bethell.

I don't like the feeling that he'll come back here in a few years time in charge of a competent English side.
There's another Ashes series before then - the make up of the Australian team for June 2027 is anyone's guess.

And before that, there's the 150th anniversary game at the MCG in March 2027.

He'll do well in England and I did forget about the anniversary game. I think by the time they come back here for an Australian summer tour, he could very well be captain if he follows the trajectory laid out for him.

Yeah I can't think of another candidate for captain.

More DRS bullshit. That murmur rather than spike as the ball passed Weatherald's bat has been given out a couple of other times in the series, but not here.

Just get it right and train up the bloody 3rd umpires. They ask for ridiculous amount of replays. Just go to Snicko/RTS. This dude who sounds like he is from the sub continent see the ball has clearly missed the bat by a long way on an LBW appeal and then says can I have RTS please.

If I was Stokes I would have taken the team off the ground and said we are going to talk to the 3rd umpire and the technical people so we can get it right, We've been screwed all series so at least lets fix this up for the last bit of the series.

Steve Waugh was picked as a #6 batting allrounder but his back went. Watson was pick as slightly more bowling than batting allrounder and his back and other injuries went and he turned into a batsmen. Mitch Marsh was picked as a #6 batting allrounder and had a few good tests as a bowler but most of his career didn't do much.

All 3 were better ODI allrounders.

Simon O'Donnell was pick as a bowling allrounder. Greg Matthews was pick as a bowling allrounder but ended up being a batting allrounder averaging 40+ with both bat and ball. Tony Dodemaide was seen as a bowling allrounder.

Tom Moody they hoped would come along as a #6 batting allrounder.

If I dig a bit I'm sure I will come up with a few more names than above over the last 50 years.

The fact Green is 200cm and can bowl at 150 km/hr is why the Aussie selectors are prepared to give him such a long honeymoon period.

no doubt subscribes to the notion that “Port Power are irrelevant”, while finding a reason to bring Port up at every opportunity.

I mentioned it to a mate - he replied, "Pity the tennis isn't on, or he could talk about straight sets."

I'll be amazed if Smith isn't there.

Yeah agreed. 36 though, 37 next year, his time isn't far off. Warner and Ussie both went in their late 30s
Agree with that - you can't imagine he'll be around when the Poms return in 4 years.
