Brad Crouch will officially join St Kilda as a restricted free agent in Season 2021 after Adelaide Football Club decided not to match the Saints’ offer.

Head of List Management James Gallagher said Crouch was an important addition to St Kilda’s midfield for Season 2021 and beyond.

“It’s a really exciting prospect for our club and supporters to have Brad commit to St Kilda,” Gallagher said.

Having another high-quality midfielder join our ranks was a target for us heading into this year’s Trade Period, and we’re expecting him to have an immediate impact on our side. Brad’s a genuine competitor and his ability to win the footy and use it well will greatly complement our midfield.”

Crouch, who won Adelaide’s best-and-fairest in 2019, said he was excited to start a new chapter at RSEA Park.

“I’m really looking forward to joining the Saints next year,” Crouch said.

“St Kilda is going in the right direction and I’m stoked to be a part of it next season.

“I’m determined to gain the trust and confidence of the club, its supporters and my new teammates, and I am confident that my best football is ahead of me at St Kilda”.

Let’s not be too critical of Adelaide here. We put them in an awkward position. One I believe is the last major unfairness yet to be addressed by equalization measures. Even though we benefit this time, there will come a time when we lose players to free agency and we will be unlikely to gain full value in the compensation measure offered by the AFL. We won’t be gloating then.

That said I am very pleased to welcome Brad Crouch to the club. Go you good thing [emoji38]

They knew he was looking to leave, they pumped tyres, puffed their chests out and jungle drums were beating.

Pick 2 never going to happen, they backed themselves into a corner the minute they went marketing on a hope and a prayer.

Settled on what may net greater reward and has less fluency by taking a known quantity: rnd 2 selection and potential: early rather than purely via agreements.

Hard to fault the decision, but the time lag between it occurring is interesting.

We already lost Goddard and Dal Santo to FA. It was our turn to get something back.

I have to say, I did not see this coming without more details. I wouldn't be surprised if there was something like Dunstan for a future 3rd-4th agreed upon before they agreed not to match.

Honestly, they put themselves in an awkward position - it’s called hoist on their own petard.

They tried to play the system to get pick 2 but completely misread the worth of their player who, incidentally, they would have dumped with no compunction if they had got band 1 compo.

Don’t feel sorry for them, they played their hand out in public, like amateurs, letting everyone see their desperation. In the end they were schooled by a seriously professional team that structured a very good (and fair) contract. Lethers said from day 1 that we were going after him as a free agent and that we were not prepared to trade, let alone our first pick. They didn’t listen. In the end they stuffed themselves by trying to be too clever by half.

Compensation is not, nor ever has been about full value, but something to appease the team losing the pick. We’ve lost high draft pick players like Cripps and Lynch over the years, so I’m going to sit back and enjoy one going in our favour for a change.

Comprehensive list of players to have averaged 30+ disposals, 5+ tackles and 5+ clearances per game across a whole season in the last decade.

There’s 10 of them.

Ablett, T. Mitchell, Oliver, Macrae, JPK, Treloar, Rockliff, S. Thompson, M. Boyd.

And our boy Brad Crouch (2019).

A contested pig, accumulator, who tackles hard.

Will have a big influence on our midfield. Steele (187cm, 90kg) and Crouch (186cm, 85kg) will be great to watch on the inside.

Is it fair that Essendon gain an early first round pick for a player on a 3 year deal and good money but Adelaide get a second round pick for a player on a 5 year deal and similar money ???

we are St Kilda supporters ... fairness rarely comes into play ... just stoked to be on the otherside of being boned by the AFL's dodgy spreadsheet

Swings and roundabouts, it happens. They were painted into a corner and took the least painful way out. There are other teams that I'd take greater joy in exploiting in this way.
