I haven't followed the rules on eligibly for a few years but as I understand it the swans get 9 combined Rookies and Veterans.

To be a veteran you need to be over 30 and given ten years of service. A couple of months ago crouch turned 30 and is in his 11th season with the club.

If we wanted to are we able to transfer crouch to the veterans list and promote a rookie like O'Dwyer to our senior list. This could also release some salary cap pressure for next year (though Crouch is probably not going to stay on). Or de we need to this at the start of the season.

Does anyone know if this synopsis is corre3ct, or is my understanding of the rules incorrect or out dated... I guess this is one of those questions for Liz.

Pretty sure Leo Barry and Michael O are on the veterans list already. I am pretty sure we're only allowed two.

We could bring O'Dwyer onto the senior list anyway as we players out for the season (we promoted Smith for Thornton on long term injury list).
The other player out for the season is Daniel O'Keefe

My understanding of the rule is that you can only have 2 players at a time on the Veterans List and currwently the Swans already have 2 players on the list.

Apparently they changed the rules, and we can have as many as we'd like to.

Veterans Rule
Changes to the Veterans Rule mean that a Club can nominate a player to be a veteran if that player has been listed at that Club for a minimum of ten years and turns 30 years of age, or is older, in the relevant playing season. A Club may list any number of eligible veterans and once placed on the Veteran’s List a Player cannot be removed until he leaves the Club. The allowance for each veteran will decrease as the number of veterans increases.

My understanding of the rule is that you can have as many as you like for salary cap purposes, though the effect is such that at most one player's salary can be excluded from the cap in total - ie if you have two veterans, half of each salary is excluded from the cap. If you have three, a third of each salary is excluded from the cap.

For the purposes of "outside" veterans I believe you can just have the two - ie you can effectively "trade" two rookie spots for two senior (veteran) players.

And no, you can't do it halfway through a season (irrevelant in our case anyway) since you are entitled to fewer rookies if you have outside veterans.

And as others have pointed out, there is no impediment to playing O'Dwyer, or any other rookie, at the moment given two players already out for the season.

And I can't see the salary cap veteran thingy being of any relevance re Crouch next season since surely his time with the club is nearly up. However, it's worth noting that Kirk become eligible next year (over 30 and he joined the club in 1999, meaning this is his 10th season) and I think Goodes becomes eligible the year after. So if Leo and/or Magic calls it quits at the end of this year, we can still have two outside veterans if the club chooses. And with rumours that the rookie list is to be expanded to 10 (and presumably still +3 local lads for us) as a lead up to the entry of the new clubs, it could well make sense to continue sacrificing one or two of these spots in order to give the likes of Smith and O'Dwyer further time to prove if they've got what it takes.

I doubt this matters for Crouch.

He will be coaching full time anyway.

Liz post gave me another thought.

If they do indeed extend the rookies list, where does that leave us in Canberra? With a limited amount of players we can play, I assume it will be just more for Tuggeranong to use as top ups (I think that is the correct team).

Very good point Mase.

Due to injury and suspension we haven't been pushing the 18 player limit until the last couple of weeks. It will get very interesting trying to rotate those 5 listed players on the bench in the coming week.

AFAIK, Tuggeranong have actually played any of our players just yet.
