NO TROLLS Rankine handed a 4 match suspension by the AFL integrity unit for a homophobic slur against opponent

I just don't like the idea of players dobbing on each other if that is what happens. It is not acceptable but it's context would of not been anything about him actually having same gender sexual interactions. It's like me calling you stupid for missing a mark, you're not mentally challenged.

For me it doesn't matter. The issue is as society we need to be better, and like it or not these players are role models, and Issac should know this if he doesn't he's dumber than a plank of wood. These players get away with it then you'll see it filter down to lower level and that is a big no no. There's a difference between 'dumb or stupid' and these ones. However, personally I tread carefully using even those words.

The fact that the AFL has been clear on stamping this out and increasing penalties each time it happens. The fact that the penalties have gone from what Finlayson got to the Sydney guy getting 5 weeks. Plus every club does education sessions around this…

It means if you’re STILL using that language on the field after all that then you’re either not very bright, have low impulse control, use that terminology routinely in your day to day…or worse.

There were suggestions he used the word repeatedly as well.

If it's a repeated use then dead set throw the book at him, give him 8 weeks, if it's ony once 6 weeks, rule him out of finals and a GF. It might be what these players need, and frankly I'm over it. Why do players think this is what 'sledging' needs to be.

Precedent is the cornerstone of our legal system so its a great defense.

It’s nonsense because precedent applies to consistent rulings, not excusing misconduct. Prior failures to punish don’t erase current wrongdoing - otherwise injustice compounds instead of being corrected. Precedent enforces fairness, not a free pass for repeated mistakes.

How about they put in a clause that if the suspension doesn't include finals? So Rankine can get 6 weeks off start of next year. That'll probably piss off the folks on the reddit afl sub who think he should be banned for life.

On the flip side to ‘I get mad when people dib dob’…the afl has drawn a line in the sand and set the most basic of expectations on players - hey guys can we not use homophobic slurs on the field!

If players can’t even meet those most basic standards then they should be done for it. If you don’t have the mental capacity to get through a footy game without using…let’s be honest…probably 5 or 6 commonly used words which are either racist or homophobic and which the AFL says pls don’t say this…then that is all on the player.

Have to say, the last time I heard the Bundle of Sticks slur in public, it hit me with a bit of a wet fish slap because I have not heard it said for years. It is very, very out of date now and probably no longer qualifies for any kind of Heat of the Moment defence.

I agree in a perfect world it's gone, but while it is still in our society it needs to be seen in context and what the person's ideas and meaning behind those words are.

It is like pronouns in 15 years will there be suspensions for not calling someone a they or them?

Or calling a player a he or a she?

The precedent was to excuse misconduct though. Its kinda how the legal system does work here.

Izak Rankine - Finger (5 weeks)

“Someone else wasn’t properly punished for a completely wrong action, therefore all wrong actions shouldn’t be punished” is the most inane defense.

Nobodys saying that.
Very simpleton way of interpreting what has been said.

I fully expect if Rankine has used the F-word that he would get 4+ weeks off.

The point being how the AFL thinks handing down these bans is acceptable while turning a blind eye to criminal behaviour is beyond me.

Not a lot of point getting into the debate over whether slurs deserve suspensions or not but in a situation where slurs do get suspensions I reckon the best course of action is to not use slurs.
Yes you are right, I am just giving my opinion as this is why I love this board. But in truth, the rules are there and he has broken them he deserves it.

Wonder if players will start trying to wind up players/get a ride out of them to provoke them to say certain things so they get suspended. Has anyone else thought of that, or just my weird brain. Wouldn't put it past Craig the mastermind McRae, playing the long game. Brilliant.

It does need to be seen in context, but in the sense that if the player has a track record of Israel Folau style homophobia, it's even worse IMO.

I do think that 5 weeks-odd is a bit harsh IMO, given you get about that for punching someone in the head.

I do think that the slippery-slope arguments are a red herring, however. We are capable of making each call on its own merits. That said, c alling someone a Bundle of Sticks is more akin to calling a trans person a 'trans' or 'it'.

I'm going to avoid answering on those pronouns if that's okay, I just don't want to say something that some on here may take offence to. One thing I will say I do try and get those right for everyone and as people we should at least try.

It's not hard to not use slurs, it's just not. How would you feel if your son or daughter is in the LGBT group? It's already marginalised, can we not have players using slurs period, it's actually not that hard. You are taught about this when you are 12 years old at school. I get footy is in the heat of battle but it still doesn't let you use slurs

surprised by the amount of debate on this, if he’s guilty it’s one of the most clear cut suspensions of the season.

Finlayson, Powell, Collard got progressively bigger suspensions last year.

Graham 4 after self reporting, Raik Andrew got 5, pretty clear Rankine will get 6.

The AFL is making a stance and has been for the last 2 years, all players know that.

The AFL is probably just disappointed that players still don’t get the message, how hard it is to just not say that word or say something else?

This is 100% on Rankine for letting down his team.
