NO TROLLS Rankine handed a 4 match suspension by the AFL integrity unit for a homophobic slur against opponent

As players they have access to the best education there is, if they need that to keep up with the times it's there for them to use.
Not sure if this was a case of education. Pretty sure Rankine knows saying the word is not okay, he just didn't think/couldn't stop himself. So in this case a matter of self control. Maybe they can train that?

Okay make it 50k then.

Still does nothing, again these players earn a million a year plus whatever they do outside. It NEEDS to be a suspension. How is it fair that other players get suspended and then as soon as an elite player does it we go and say 'oh Issac you can pay your way out of this'. Do you realise just how big a storm that will be? Other clubs would be rightfully blowing up deluxe.

No, I think it is relevant here. There is a serious inconsistency in rule application across the AFL and this is a part of that discussion.
An issue that DangerSloane had never posted about until Rankine was accused of Homophobia.

Its a deflection tactic so we spend 5 pages on why Willie got off cheaply, and not about why Rankine allegedly hates gay people. No different to why Richmond fans always want to bring up Tanner Bruhn in threads about Balta.

Again that can be taught through education and re education, they have specialists in those areas. Hopefully he gets some help in self control and learns from this. It might be exactly what he needs

Yes I'm not saying it should be changed for him in this case, but a future precedent.

Just my opinion though, I'm sure many disagree. I'm just a bit sick of suspensions over all sorts of things changing the outcome of what happens on field. With umpiring etc it seems the AFL have more power than ever.

Right - and can you see how pivoting to “AFL ignores crimes” in a thread about your own club’s player using a slur reads as whataboutism? Whatever else the AFL gets wrong, this incident stands alone.

I said the same thing when other players were banned.

Regardless of which team it is...do you not agree that its wildly hypocritical?

I think everyone agrees with that. I'm sick of players being suspended for homophobia and racism too.

If anything these suspensions should be 6+ weeks every time, it's the only way these players learn. Now whilst I am all for the MRP things to change (that's for another thread), this one I am happy they come down hard.

I see this comparison a lot but the people making it never really seem to have a problem with the homophobic slur… just say what you mean, the whataboutism is clearly only meant to minimise and muddy the water

I've said what I mean.

Coward punching a bloke at the pub and almost killing him is worse than a homophobic slur.

Should the slur be punished? Yes.
Should the grievous bodily harmed be punished more? Yes.

You'd have to have a very simple view on things to think that its one or the other.

On the flip side to ‘I get mad when people dib dob’…the afl has drawn a line in the sand and set the most basic of expectations on players - hey guys can we not use homophobic slurs on the field!

If players can’t even meet those most basic standards then they should be done for it. If you don’t have the mental capacity to get through a footy game without using…let’s be honest…probably 5 or 6 commonly used words which are either racist or homophobic and which the AFL says pls don’t say this…then that is all on the player.
Maybe an umpire/s heard it, which would put the whole 'dib dob' nonsense to rest.

Whilst true one soft as butter punishment and blame Laura and co for that, doesn't mean you continue to be soft. Look what is appropriate who knows, but out for the season is fair and it's what is probably needed for other players.

I don't feel bad for Issac, he's the bloke that's put himself into this mess, I feel for the innocent Crows supporters.

You’d have very few people who disagree with you regarding Balta and Rioli. There, you happy?

Now back to Rankine, seems pretty clear cut given the precedents set over the last few years, doesn’t it? 4, 5 or 6?

They said the punishments would increase. Graham got 4, Riak Andrews got 5. You'd assume the starting point is 5, but whether it's 5 or 6, that's his season.

Not sure Ranking is going to put on home detention for this, but it would be funny!
