We should be angry with him.

Firstly, he’s put a massive dent in our finals chances by his own actions. We gave up a lot to get him, and while he’s been brilliant for us, he’s now not going to be there when we need him most (and will still collect his very handsome pay cheque btw).

Secondly, after a long time there’s finally a bit of excitement and joy around following the Crows. Now we have to deal with this shit instead.

All because he couldn’t regulate his emotions properly.

There's a reason why the following legislation exists, to which any form of discrimination is unlawful, and the workplace is governed by these and the Workplace legislation/instruments. Whether the person was indigenous or harassed on the topic of sexual orientation it does not matter

I understand your anger but lusting for revenge against a player who made an innocent mistake not directed at an actual member of the gay community isnt the answer. Education is a better path than making someone potentially miss playing in a premiership

By using that word to insult someone, you're suggesting that someone that is gay is weak, soft, cowardly, and basically a lesser person.

I know for most of us straight guys that are 40+ this is probably something that has never really been given much thought - but it only takes a touch of empathy to realise that it is pretty shit.

The AFL is a multi-billion dollar industry in terms of annual revenue and assets and receives hundreds of millions of public funding from all tiers of government. And with that comes a public responsibility to act as community leaders when it comes to stamping out abuse of minority groups.

In 2014 then AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou signed a public commitment along with the leaders of other Australian professional sports bodies to eradicate homophobia and to create an inclusive culture where people feel safe to come out and not hide their sexuality for fear of abuse and vilification.

Demetriou said this when signing that commitment:

"We know there is still work to be done," ..."Discrimination is never acceptable and vilification based on sexual identity is just as serious an offence as vilification based on gender, race, religion or special disability."

It's been eleven years since that commitment was signed... and it's been said (I'm not in a position to verify) that the AFL remains the only major sport in the world to have never had a male player come out as gay or bisexual (current or retired).

And still the slurs happen in AFL stadiums by professional athletes. The fear of abuse and being outed amongst those playing at lower and junior levels must be immense.

THAT'S why harsh and increasing penalties for professional AFL players are required.

Should have thought about the ramifications BEFORE opening his mouth. There’s been how many incidents? The AFL has come out every time and said do it again and it will be longer. If Rankine is too brainless to get in line it’s not the AFL’s fault
