Seriously, if the aim is to actually protect gay people from hearing bad words, as an approach it’s a massive strategic fail.

What's the alternative? Let people get away with dropping slurs because confronting them is uncomfortable?

Ignoring it or pretending it doesn't exist is much more uncomfortable for victims, I promise you. Letting people get away with it won't put a stop to it. Growth often requires struggle.

The aim is not to stop people from hearing bad words, it's to stop people from saying them in the first place.

Yeah he could do that, or, and this might sound crazy but hear me out, the player in question could man up and show some accountability for behaviour that is widely regarded as completely unacceptable

They’re footballers who, as much as we admire them, are often far from the brightest individuals. Unfortunately, they’ll probably never learn.

Hopefully a ban here is a step in the right direction on education (even if it's through a deterrent) but I really doubt it plays out that way.

Unlikely. This sort of behaviour is totally not tolerated. Precedent has been set. Also the fact it has been reported indicates to me at least that there is sufficient evidence to support the allegation. I think he is ****ed.

What a stupid comment. Who cares who reported it. So the club should devalue the seriousness of a disgusting comment, yet just use it to get Rankine suspended because we may play them in a final? Go back to sleep buddy....

This just goes to show how stupid some of these players are. They’re not switched on enough to let this be the final straw. It’ll keep happening.

No surprise something like this came from Rankine. He would be my second choice at the Crows (behind Tex obviously) to use this kind of language.

Tex, Finlayson, Izak. I think the AFL need to go easy on these players, they should realise that if you are living in a city stuck in the 70s, you will talk like someone from the 70s.

Zero chance of anything happening here. Probably get a response from the AFL such as... He has called the opponent, apologized and said it won't happen again. We are satisfied with this outcome.

Then next week some unknown North player does the same thing... AFL response - This is preposterous! We have handed down a 10 week ban to this individual, fined him $10,000, and sent him straight to jail!

No way. The AFL has set a precedent on this issue. He will have to get six weeks or so. Season done.
