NO TROLLS Rankine handed a 4 match suspension by the AFL integrity unit for a homophobic slur against opponent

Hmm, another one of these.

Once again, in the interests of protecting a group of people from ‘harm’ associated with the hearing of a word, we create a weeks long drama in which that word is relentlessly repeated or alluded to all over society and the media.

Seriously, if the aim is to actually protect gay people from hearing bad words, as an approach it’s a massive strategic fail.
Hmm, I don't know about this. You can't take the hush hush, don't draw attention to it approach. I get that all attention may then have a negative impact, but allowing people to say offensive things and not shine a light on it is how you create real issues.

You're speaking as if gay people only exist at home and not on the field, and thus will only be offended once they hear about this. It's said time and time again, no openly gay players in the AFL, there's still a problem and this contributes to it. You have to shine a spotlight on it. You can't act as if people being offended about it only exists outside of the players on the field.

I think you’re naive.

This just goes to show how stupid some of these players are. They’re not switched on enough to let this be the final straw. It’ll keep happening.
The thing is that every single club would almost certainly have an LGBT person in there somewhere - whether player, coach, or off-field. Even if it's not open, surely a lot of people would 'know' in a tight-knit environment like a footy club.

Surely even the dumbest of dumb bunnies can at least comprehend "Oh yeah, if I use that word then I'm offending my own team-mate".

Me watching the AFL tie themselves in knots trying to not give him more than 2 weeks.

You’re giving far too much credit to the unintelligent.

Would be more interesting if Rankine was a Colllingwood player and then we could see how much balls the AFL have or don't have aka Maynard and Bradshaw.

I don't think Adelaide will get any special treatment if Rankine is found guilty.

A Collingwood player would definitely get suspended.

Weird comment.

It will be interesting to find out if it was Collingwood who made the complaint

Well, something was in the air at Adelaide oval apparently.

Seperate to this, reported online so perhaps the right spot this ‘rumour’, but Adelaide fans were accused of homophobic slurs to Moore and Elliott throughout the night.

I can tell you now, although certain fans might get a bad rap for booing etc, I haven’t heard this crap at the MCG. You’d be removed from the ground.

You wouldn’t have seen this for 20 years.

Seeing what Graham and that kid from the Swans got, that should mean his goose is cooked unless the Crows make the Granny

Actually going by this if the AFL are true to their word (lol) and he didn't self report, he's done for the year even if they make the granny

Fine, ban him for 8 weeks. Make it 10 and make a statement. But its unworkable and impossible to be consistent when you are suspending based on words.

That's right we fire people from workplaces and suspend them because instead of continuing to improve structural protections for vilified groups and focusing on building resilience we instead validate people's desire to feel offended.

Like most inclusion policies, it's the result of people making a dollar off it somewhere. Plenty of examples that make you wonder.

I'm sorry, are you saying calling someone who may very well be homosexual a (insert offensive name) is fine and they should just toughen up and get over it?

Wtf? Guns brought in. Constant swearing. Removals every weeks.

A year ago I witnessed two approx 40 yo blokes who knew a trio of girls were 16 buying them alcohol.

Lets not start to pretend there arent idiots everywhere.

No. Its far more nuanced than that. Though you appear to be a headline grabber rather than someone who can have a reasonable discussion so I imagine whatever I say you'll try to find some sensationalist take on it.

I’m talking about abuse throughout a game of that nature doesn’t happen.

Ok maybe I misunderstood, from your post I gathered that the person on the receiving end needed to be more resilient and suspending people for making the offensive comments is the wrong way to handle it. Maybe you can expand a bit on your sentiment?

So let's just get this clear.

Last week two players interfered with each other's private parts?

One took a little swipe at feeling up the wedding tackle the other returned serve with a two fingered Hopawati digital exam.

AFL. Nothing to see here. Even though EVERYONE saw it.

This week. Someone said something.

4 weeks.

The AFL and its suspensions have been a disgrace for a long time.

This season is almost as bad as any. We had the West Coast player push a Richmond player in the pre season which resulted in Lalor breaking his jaw which is the worst injury suffered in this push suspension movement? The west coast player got zero weeks. There have been other instances where some players have gotten weeks others got off.

It should be clear cut if your suspending people it’s the action not the outcome.

How do you justify Mansell getting 3 weeks for a push , Balta getting 4 or 5 weeks for assaulting someone that could have resulted in death and slurs can have the same outcome or worse.

It really is a chook lotto, Rankine has to get 4-5 weeks if they are consistent with previous bans but watch them make up some bullshit ruling and he gets a fine or misses the last round. For what it’s worth I don’t think a slur is worth the same punishment as assaulting someone.

Yet in a league with hundreds of games played it happens maybe once or twice a year...

As opposed to the good old days where it happened every.single.game.
