A new coach brings new opportunities. The Crows get their first run for the 2020 season against the higher fancied Bulldogs. Some notable absences included Tom Lynch, Bryce Gibbs and Jake Kelly, the latter of whom suffered a minor groin injury during training. The Crows stuck with the Bulldogs for the first half but were blown away in the 3rd, as the doggies piled on nine goals straight. M Crouch and Sloane both impressed, as did the uncapped McHenry. Fans would be reasonably pleased with the first hit-out, but disappointed to be out of the pre-season tournament.

  • Round 1 Team.
    1627114785269.png

The Crows faced the Swans in their Round 1 match for the 2020 season. Their selected team includes four debutants [McAsey, McHenry, Schoenberg and OConnor], alongside a raft of inexperienced players. The coach was adamant during the week that games aren’t being ‘gifted,’ and they are trying to find their best team balance. It was also Sloane’s 200th game, a very impressive milestone. Talia was also unceremoniously left out, to make way for a returning Kelly.

The Crows played catch up most of the afternoon, and their plight was not helped by inaccurate kicking. 27 scoring shots to 26, yet the differential was 56 points in favour of the Swans. Sloane was huge in his 200th game, whilst the Crows also had good contributions from Kelly, M Crouch and Obrien. Franklin was at his damaging best for the Swans, as were Cunningham and Heeney.

The Crows recalled Talia for their Round Two match against the Magpies. From the first siren to the last, the Crows were never really in the hunt. The Magpies were stronger all over the ground and the final margin was an accurate indicator of how the match played out. Early signs of 2020 point to a very difficult season for the Crows. M Crouch, Sloane, OBrien and Smith all stood up for the disappointing Adelaide outfit.

There may be wholesale changes down at the club this week.

2020. Round 3. Crows Vs Bulldogs.
  • Round 3 Team.
    1627124730586.png

Despite several players knocking on the door and two heavy defeats, the Crows coach has surprised a few by naming an unchanged team for their Round 3 clash with the Bulldogs. He has urged for calm, as his young team tries to develop the gameplan and adjust to new roles. They will have to be at their absolute best to challenge the currently undefeated Bulldogs team. Atkins will play game 100, which is a terrific effort and he'll be hoping to finish the day with a win.

    Rory Atkins career statistics.
    1627182373242.png

Although the Bulldogs went on to win from start to finish, the Crows were able to keep the final margin to a more respectable 38 points. Knight was super impressive with a five-goal effort, and the Crows were served well by a much-improved B Crouch. Walker spent some time as a key back, with the coach perhaps experimenting a new role for the skipper. The Bulldogs midfield proved to be very strong with their ability to accumulate possessions, as well as hit the scoreboard.

2020. Round 4. Crows Vs Kangaroos.
  • Round 4 Team.
    1627182038240.png

The coach of the Crows has had his hand forced by MacKay and Gallucci, due to their form in the reserves this season. They will replace Seedsman and Jones, who will now go back to work on their respective games. The coach and fans would be looking at their round four clash as a big opportunity, as they face the also winless Kangaroos.

It was an ecstatic Crows dressing room after they defeated the Kangaroos by 66 points, winning every quarter on their way to a first win in 2020. The Crows win did not come without casualties as OBrien, B Crouch and Smith all left the field with injury and did not return. OBrien's injury paved the way for Himmelberg to have a breakout game in the ruck. Walker returned to form with five goals, while M Crouch, Keays, Sloane, Doedee and Atkins were all big contributors.

    1627200151844.png

The Crows will be without their number one ruckman for their Round five clash against the Lions. Obrien was showing some good signs but will miss several weeks due to a shoulder injury sustained against the Kangaroos. B Crouch and Smith both passed fitness tests and will play. Lynch comes in for his first game of 2020, and Schoenberg will make way for Sholl, who will make his debut after strong showings in the reserves. The Crows will head in with cautious optimism after a fantastic win against the Kangaroos.

The Crows have pulled off a stunning upset against the Lions, and by doing so have recorded their second win in a row after a 0-3 start. The Crows had 10 more scoring shots, which was the final result. The Lions threatened on many occasions to blow the game open but were thwarted and held off for long enough. Walker suffered an injury, which opened the door for Lynch to play higher minutes - and he did not disappoint. Other players who had solid outings included Sloane, Knight, M Crouch, Talia and McHenry.

The young Crows face another huge test against an established and talented opponent in the Giants. They will be hoping to continue their winning run, or perhaps more realistically stay in touch with a team that is in the hunt for a premiership. Walker’s hamstring injury provides another headache for the coach, and McAsey will come in to play a key forward role. Seedsman also returns, replacing OConnor who will join Schoenberg in the reserves midfield group.

The Crows ultimately fell by a reasonable margin to the powerful Giants outfit, however can hold their heads high knowing that they didn't fly the white flag. At Half time it was looking like a 100+ point defeat, but a stronger second half from the Crows was an encouraging sign. Despite the McAsey experiment not working, the Crows were well served by the Crouch brothers, Talia, Himmelberg and Knight. Quiet games from Sholl, McHenry, Murphy and McAsey may mean they are under scrutiny at the selection table during the week.

The Crows faced another top tier contender in Round 7, as they came up against the powerful Tigers. Hamill, Frampton and Milera all came into the side for the first time in 2020, at the expense of Murphy, Brown and Sholl. These squad changes come predominantly in the name of form, but there is some thought that rotation will be key for the developing Crows list, who have several tough list choices to make at seasons end. Rory Laird plays his 150th match, a terrific milestone.

The Crows will be ruing a missed opportunity to cause a big upset, as the Tigers took until the final quarter to overcome a hard-earnt lead. Again, the Crows wayward goal kicking was a factor as they kicked 11 goals 18 behinds. The coach of the Crows would be feeling both buoyed by the effort, as well as ponderous over ‘what could have been.’ B Crouch, Milera, and Sloane all performed well for the Crows. McHenry was reported for rough play on Ross of the Tigers.

The 2020 schedule has continued to throw challenges at a developing Crows team, with the latest being a date with the 6th placed Cats. Just the one change for round eight, with Stengle coming in for the suspended McHenry.

The Cats were able to do enough to record a 49 point win over the spirited Crows, who won the second half. The Cats’ scoring power was just too strong, led by Hawkins and Dahlhaus. Talia, Knight and Sloane were strong in their performance and leadership against a more experienced lineup. Milera will be disappointed after a quiet game following his fantastic performance against the Tigers.

B Crouch suffered a hamstring injury at training during the week, and OConnor was named as his replacement thanks to strong form in the reserves. The Crows would view the match against the Blues as winnable, particularly after facing some tough opposition in recent weeks. The coach has called for patience as his team continues to develop.

The Crows were taught a lesson in how to play in the wet by the Blues, going down by 27 points. The Blues won the first three quarters by two goals each, which made it too great a task for the Crows to overcome in the last. Walsh and Cripps had 79 disposals between them, displaying complete midfield dominance. Sloane, M Crouch, Lynch, Seedsman and Atkins all tried hard for the disappointed Crows outfit.

The Crows made three changes to the side ahead of their round 10 match against the struggling Bombers. Walker made his return from injury, while Hartigan is set to play his first match of 2020 at the expense of McAsey. Hamill also made way for the more experienced Brown, who was omitted after Round 6.

In what is fast becoming a trend for this season, the Crows did enough to stay in touch with their opposition, without really challenging them for the win. The Bombers did enough to keep the Crows at arms length, and Fantasia’s four goals proved to be decisive. Talia, Sloane and Keays were all solid contributors for the Crows and Milera kicked 4.0, but OConnor was quiet in his return to the side.

    1627348220283.png

The Crows enter Round 11 with an unenviable record of 2-8 and hope to get back on the winners list against the 16th placed Dockers. OConnor gave way for McHenry who returned from suspension, whilst Worrell comes in for Doedee who injured his calf against the Bombers. The coach said that the key to winning will be to shut down Fyfe, who is averaging 30 disposals and almost 2 goals a game in season 2020.

Heartbreak in the Crows' rooms after the match as the Dockers kicked a goal in the last minute to win by a point. After a scoreless third quarter, the Crows kicked four straight goals in the last before Fyfe put his team ahead. Although the loss will burn for the Crows, they can take stock that they can be competitive if they play four quarters. Sloane, Kelly, Keays and M Crouch all did their best to almost get their team over the line. Fyfe was at his damaging best, with 33 touches and 2 goals. Atkins will also face the match review panel during the week after engaging in rough play with Mundy.

The Crows get another chance to stage an upset when they face the Giants for the second time in 2020. Despite calls around the league that this is a percentage booster for the NSW based side, the coach of the Crows sees it as an opportunity to demonstrate their growth. Five changes have been made to the side that lost by a point against the Dockers. B Crouch and Obrien return from injury, plus McAsey, Sholl and Fogarty all return to balance the side. Brown and Seedsman find themselves again on the outer, while Hartigan and Frampton could consider themselves unlucky. Atkins to miss due to a two week ban for rough play on Mundy. The Crows will have to shut down Cameron, who has 43 goals in 11 games so far this season.

The Crows recorded a huge upset, beating the first placed Giants by 12 points in a real arm-wrestle. A seven goal last quarter meant that the Crows finished as the stronger and possibly fitter side. Despite Cameron’s seven goal haul, the Crows more even attack was able to hold their nerve as the Giants pushed hard late. M Crouch, Lynch, Smith, B Crouch, Sloane, MacKay and Kelly were all instrumental in the emotional win.

The Crows are set to play their second double up match in as many weeks as they tackle the Blues, who got the better of them the first time around. Just the one change from the previous week, as Brown is recalled at the expense of Worrell who still looks a bit green for AFL level. The Crows will be looking to limit the influence of Cripps, who is averaging 30 disposals and 5 clearances a game. They will take plenty of momentum in after their shock win over the Giants.

In yet another rainy encounter, the Blues showed their class in the end despite the Crows coming out of the blocks strong. The Crows once again can blame their wayward kicking, as they kicked 4.9 in the first quarter. But it was the third quarter where the Blues took ascendancy, kicking five goals to one. Cripps was dominant despite M Crouch watching him closely and having plenty of it himself. Veteran Murphy of the Blues also showed he still has plenty to give, with perhaps a best on ground performance. Kelly, Obrien, Sloane and Milera all worked hard alongside M Crouch. Stengle had a bit of a shocker today, and rounded it out by being reported for striking Murphy.

The Crows now head into their bye as a team that is gaining some respect around the league.

The Crows will face a high flying Hawks outfit, who are placed 3rd on the ladder in 2020 through 14 rounds. Gibbs comes into the side for his first game of the season, and Doedee returns from injury to bulk up the defence. Stengle’s suspension makes him a forced change, whilst Sholl was omitted. Atkins was available after his suspension, but will have to earn his spot back through the reserves. The Crows will have to try and shut down Mitchell, who is averaging 35 disposals a game.

Another week, and another case of ‘what if?’ for the Crows, who went down to the Hawks by 4 points. In a dour, wet contest both teams were quite uninspiring until the Crows came late. The ball was in their forward 50 when the siren went, adding to the heartache. Mitchell was simply huge for the Hawks with 47 touches and 2 goals, and would be a certainty for the 3 votes. Sloane, Milera, M Crouch, Lynch, Doedee and B Crouch were all excellent contributors for the improving Crows.

    Round 15 Team selection.

    1627512557232.png

The Crows see round 15 as another chance for a win, as they face the 6-8 Demons who are without Gawn. The team the narrowly lost to the Hawks is unchanged, signalling that the team is starting to find a healthy balance. Talia will play game 200, and Lynch his 150th, and both have been terrific servants of the club. The Crows will need to try and shut down Langdon, who is averaging 31 disposals and a goal per match. Skipper Walker will play in his 200th game this round, in what has been a fantastic career so far.

Another match, another close game in the wet as the Crows lose to the Demons by 11 points. Despite controlling large portions of the game, the Crows weren’t able to create as many scoring shots as they would have liked. Lynch suffered a hamstring injury in his milestone game, not exactly what he had in mind as a celebration. The coach had mixed feelings post game about the result, but payed tribute to Talia and Lynch. Obrien was colossal in the ruck, while Milera continues his climb as an exciting young midfielder. Once again Sloane, B Crouch and Keays all had good games, and M Crouch sacrificed his statistical game in order to try and nullify Langdon. Smith, Gallucci and McHenry will all be nervous after ultra-quiet games.

    1627540100406.png

The Crows are set to face the 15th placed Saints, who have just one more win than them so far in the 2020 season. Lynch is out due to the minor groin injury suffered against the Hawks, while Brown was once again omitted. Seedsman and Sholl return to the side after strong form in the reserves. The Crows will have to keep a close eye on midfielder Ross, who is averaging 24 touches and almost 2 goals per game this year.

The Crows were never in the contest as they went down by 58 points against an efficient Saints side who won every quarter. The Crows would be feeling very disappointed in this result, as they had identified this game as 'winnable.' Milera, Sloane and Kelly and B Crouch all stood up for the Crows, and M Crouch won his 1 on 1 battle with Ross. There were plenty of passengers in the 22 today, and the coach may run out of patience this week at the selection table. Marshall was massive for the Saints, especially after Obrien went down with a hamstring injury in the first half.

    Round 17 Team selection.

The Crows will be out to improve their name in footy this week, as they take on the 3rd placed Eagles. They now sit outright last, with just the three wins across the season to date. Strachan was upgraded from the rookie list during the week due to strong form in the reserves and[HW1] will debut as part of a ruck tandem with E Himmelberg. Hamill and Jones also return, while goal sneak McAdam will also make his debut. McAsey, Gibbs and Mackay were all omitted, alongside Obrien who will miss a month with his hamstring injury. Lynch didn't pass a fitness test and will sit another week out. The Crows will need to shut down Darling, who has 46 goals for the season so far.

The brave crows went down to a professional Eagles outfit by 48 points at the final siren. The margin was just one goal at half time before 3rd term Eagle blitz lead by Petrucelle, Kelly and Ryan. Knight returned to the multiple goal kickers list for the Crows with four, and Strachan more than held his own on debut in the ruck. Milera continued his hot form, while B Crouch and Sloane had strong games. The coach moved the magnets around in the last quarter, in a possible sign of things to come for the remainder of the season.

The Crows will play in the ‘showdown’ this weekend against the Power, in a match that is rarely dictated by the ladder. Both teams will be out to win this one, and the game is tipped to be highly physical. Stengle and Lynch return to the side at the expense of Gallucci and Fogarty. The Crows will be wary of a talented Power midfield group that contains Rozee, Gray, Powell-Pepper and Wines.

The game lived up to expectations, as the biggest lead either way for the first three quarters was just one goal. The Power had a surge in the last quarter led primarily by Gray and Lycett, to defeat a gallant but frustrated Crows outfit by 12 points. The Crows were well served by defenders Laird, Sholl and Doedee.

The Crows come up against another bottom side in the Suns this week and will be hoping to start a positive run towards the end of the season. In recent weeks the improving Kangaroos have moved two games clear from the Crows, and this is likely to be an extra source of motivation. Atkins and Schoenberg both return to the side after lengthy absences, as Seedsman and Hamill were both omitted after the loss against the Power. Witts is one of the dominant big men in the competition, and will likely prove to be a handful for the Crows’ young ruck stocks.

The Suns were the dominant side for large periods of the game, especially after Doedee went down with a concussion. Again for the Crows it was a slow 3rd quarter that really put a dagger through their chances of winning. It was an even performance from the Suns team, but Fiorini was a standout. Laird, Milera, Lynch and Keays were solid performers, and Walker did well when he was sent back into defence to cover for Doedee.

    Round 20 Team.

The Crows will be desperate to record another win over the Kangaroos in their Round 20 clash. They recorded a 10 goal win earlier in the season but since then the Kangaroos have seemed to show more development, resulting in two more wins. Seemingly, the Crows will go into this one with nothing to lose, including their number one pick in the National Draft. Fogarty returns immediately after a dominant display in the 2s, as does Hamill who refuses to remain omitted from the side. McAdam and Strachan are the omissions. There will be two names on the banner again this week as Keays plays his 50th, and B Crouch his 100th game this round. Higgins is one player that the Crows will have to pay very special attention to, as he averages 29 touches and a goal per game this season.

The Crows broke a seven game losing streak as they defeated the Kangaroos in a topsy turvy affair. The Kangaroos threatened to break the game open thanks to their powerful midfield led by Cunnington and Higgins, but the Crows were able to have the right answers. Sloane and the Crouch brothers were at their damaging best for the Crows, who also had fantastic contributions from Milera, Himmelberg and Doedee.

The Crows will have another meeting with the Lions in Round 21 and will be out to repeat their win from last time they met. An additional motivation for the Crows will be to ruin the finals hopes of the Lions, who are currently placed 9th. Obrien is back into the ruck for the Crows, and OConnor returns, with the out of contract midfielder looking to impress before seasons end. Talia has been omitted, and Walker has been named at full back.

The Crows defeated the Lions for the second time this season, in a high-scoring thriller by eight points. Despite leading by six goals at the final change, the Crows almost stole defeat from the jaws of victory as the Lions came home with a wet sail. Fogarty (5), Knight (4) and Atkins (3) all scored multiple goals and Sloane was mammoth with 45 disposals in a very positive win for the Crows, who have had a tough year. Walker was instrumental as he kept Coleman medallist favourite, Hipwood to three goals. Smith left the ground with a back injury, while Walker will face the match review panel after being reported.

Two forced changes for the Crows this week after their thrilling win of the Lions. Walker was suspended for umpire contact, and Smith is out with the back injury sustained last round. They face the 5th placed Bulldogs, who will be looking for points and percentage to sneak into the top four. The Crows will be looking to disrupt the finals preparations of top 8 teams, and finish a difficult season with3 consecutive wins. The Bulldogs have a deep midfield, with Bontempelli, Macrae and Dunkley all averaging more than 30 touches.

The Crows put in a good 4th quarter to regain some respect after never really being in the match against an organised and confident Bulldogs outfit. Despite going down by 41 points, the Crows were able to find some positives from the game, including the performances of young players Kelly, McHenry, McAsey and Milera. Sloane capped off a tremendous season, with 35 touches and a goal. Gowers was herculean for the Bulldogs with seven goals. Atkins was reported for the second time this season, this time for striking Wallis.
