You don't think Cornes tags better than Shirls??

I guess its personal opinion, but I think hes a much better tagger and has a bigger engine.

Nope I think he is more an attacking player that occasionally recognises that he is there to stop the other player. He is not that close checking that I associate with a tagger, so overall I would describe him as an attacking player that has a defensive side to his game ala Goodwin.

You dont notice the good taggers... you just think the ''gun'' had a bad day

Thats the difference between Shirley and CC imo

cant agree. in the bottom quartile of taggers imo - neither stops opposition gun mids getting heaps of the ball (and please start on him keeping judd to a few possies 4-5 yrs ago!) and has virtually no hurt factor himself

a real club man who flogs his guts out every week by putting his body on the line. unfortunately though he aint up to the job and is waiting to be surpassed by younger players (VB etc). WW has been saying this for yrs and I agree with him

which games and opponents specifically are you referring to?

I find most of his critics don't even know who he is matched up on when questioned... maybe you'll be an exception.

i really admire shirls for getting 100% out of himself. but i would have to think the following taggers (using my defintion ) are all considerably more valuable to their respective teams than shirls:

cornes
cassisi
stenglein
selwood (wc)
j carr
kirk
crouch
selwood (lions)
ling
carazzo
sewell
baker (the little pr1ck)
simpson
rawlings

moral of the story - most taggers are better than our shirls

The point you seem to be having difficulty grasping is that Shirls is in the bottom quartile of taggers IMO. Have a look at this list below and articulate how Shirls could possibly rate above any of them. If you fail this task then you are effectively conceding that he is a bottom quartile tagger.

We've talked about Gallman being groomed as a tagger, but do you think the role of tagger would suit Burton too? He has the engine and speed for it and if he had the role of nullifying a player (just stopping his opponent getting the ball), he wouldn't be making ridiculous decisions all the time. I know he has an X-factor to him but I would like to see him in develop into a Cameron Ling style of player.

I can't really remember the last time i saw Burton tackle someone? or dive on a loose ball?

Modra would have been a better tagger than Burton, he doesn't know the meaning of accountable and unfortunatly if you did teach him what to do, he'd probably leave his opponent at the wrong time etc, too late to change Burton, you can't teach an old dog new tricks, especially Burton. He is a free spirit as such, leave him that way, Mattner was the same.
