I have the feeling Smith will surprise a few, but not an the expense of Rutten. IMO, Smith > Bock.

I must confess.....my knowledge of Smith as a footballer starts with "he's been on our list forever as a rookie or a main list player and done SFN"....and ends with "2 out of the 3 Sturt supporters I know say he is a receiver and can't believe the AFC is taking him seriously.."

I havn't seen him playing against the Doggies as a Sturt player - but saw him once for the PAMS....and I thought he was pretty ordinary.

Ozzie seems pretty confident he will be our FB for the next 10 years.....hey - I hope you're right....but this will be his 5th year around the club....how will it be any different to the last 4 ???

Players to be on our list 3+ years and not play a game....

Jarrod Hocking - 3 years - no games - sacked before he started his 4th.
Simon Pedler - 3 years - no games - sacked before he started his 4th.
Peter Turner - 3 years - no games - then played 3 in his 4th years - sacked before he started his 5th.

...now we're saying a guy who has been on an AFC list (Rookie/Main) for 4 years with no games is going to play in his 5th year and be FB of the Century......umm......the percentages and precedents don't point to this.

I've said it before - but the Smith elevation is the single most puzzling action from the AFC during a period that has been otherwise very positive.

Good post Mad Dog. Its very hard to argue with any of that. Obviously we all want this guy to succeed but for Gods sake he is entering his 5th year on our list and so far hasnt looked close to getting a gig

So on your stats we are saying in the history of the AFC no other player has been on our list as long as Smith without playing a game. How many games would he have to play this year to stay on the list post 2005. At least 5 and show some REAL promise IMO

I saw on the news a couple of weeks ago that Rutten Van Berlo and another Crow teamed with a runner and actually won the State 4 by 100m relay title at Santos stadium.

Obviously Rutts can run reasonably fast.

Hopefully he can develop.

Smith will get his go in the pre-season. Lets wait till then to judge him.

Almost anyone is better than Bock.

it was Bock and it was against all 14-15 year olds from memory so its not really a great achievement

If only Bock and Smith could stand these 14 year olds week in, week out, they could just make the grade..... ;)
:D

From the Sturt supporters I have spoken to, Smith played good SANFL footy, whereas Bock on the other hand... Both need to show something in 2005 or risk delisting.

and they would be right...with the emphasis on SANFL footy.
But as we all know the SANFL is a lot different to the AFL, particularly when assessing the form of KPPs!
Smith doesn't play tall enough to be a KPP. He runs off all day and gets heaps off possessions (hence the receiver quote from earlier) but does stuff all in a contest. That is a not a good quality to have in your full back if you're an AFL club.

Smith may make it this year (I'll take anyone's money who says he will though :) ) but it won't be as FB.

That's how I see Smith as well.

Where in the hell can you play a tall slow receiver at AFL level?

I agree MD.

I'm a Doggies fan and I saw Smith play in the Sturt V Centrals game at Adelaide Oval this year. Smith was outmarked by Marco Bello near the Chappell Stands that night. If he cant outbody a midget at SANFL level I cant see how he can match it against the big boys in the AFL.

Hey don't stress over Smith but I base my prediction on the following.

He has been around for awhile but he came over as a very young skinny kid. His father was a very late developer and so will he. He has put on a lot of weight and filled out in the last 2 years which he needed to do, he was VERY skinny. In doing so he has not lost any speed which is important. I think he will take over Ben Hart role and maybe Rutten will make the FB. I think we find another tall to replace Bassett soon too. The AFC must have seen something in his development to delist him and then relist and finally promote him.

Please note I did not say Smith would be FB for the next decade i merely said he would be a better option IMO than Rutten. I want BOTH of them to make the team, lets us have 2 more youngsters that can play.
