A MUST win game. Burton and Welsh played in SANFL. Of those 2 I think only Burton would be considered for this match. I think Welshy is a couple of games away from selection IMHO. Carey, Smart and Burns are just about certainties to come back into the side while Stevo is another 2-3 weeks away.:(

The big question is, who comes in and who goes out? Personally, i would go:

IN: Carey, Smart and Burns
OUT: Mattner, Gallagher and possibly Crowell although he has done nothing wrong in last 2 games.

Ladhams wouldn't be feeling all that confident of keeping his spot after a few ordinary games in a row.

Thoughts??????

It will depend much on how our injured players train Stiffy. However, if Carey, Smart & Burns are all OK, then I would play them. ANy doubt & give them more rest. Burton should come in as we badly need the firepower.

As to who will be the outs: Mattner & Ladhams for starters. Not sure about the rest.

Crowell has done nothing wrong? I recall some costly turnovers and one very poor kick at goal today.
No one plays a perfect game. Crowell made a couple of mistakes but so did the likes of McLeod and Goodwin. He would be unlucky to miss out but if 3-4 are coming back then he is in a bit of a trouble.

Well yes but I think those two did enough good things to make up for any mistakes. ;)

The big thing that irked me in this game was our inability to hold things up at half forward. Worse, we'd often pass into space for our opponents to swoop on the ball. So many times the Bulldogs were able to get clear and take shots at goal. The main culprits, if I recall correctly, were Crowell, Mattner and Bassett.

If Carey, Smart and Burns are fit then IMHO out will be from :

Mattner (although its clear Gary likes him)

Gallagher (would be stiff though considering his game last week against Brisbane)

Ladhams (personally would hate to see him out but he hasn't really had a good month, will go if Burns comes back in)

Crowell ( was lucky to be included last week and will probably make way for Smart)

Lucky for Basset we don't have another option for Full Back as his last two weeks have been very poor

Also what chance of Bode being dropped? I'd hate to see it, but he must have done something wrong as he isn't getting much game time

I'd like to see Bode get more game time. To me he's wasted on the bench and could be better used at the fall of the ball.

Possible Team

B: Hart, Bassett, Smart
HB: Johnc.ock, McGregor, Massie
C: Begley, Stenglein, Goodwin
HF: Edwards, Perrie, Bode
F: Ricciuto, Carey, Burns
FOLL: Clarke, Bickley, McLeod
I/C (from): Biglands, Torney, Burton, Doughty

IN: Carey, Smart, Burton, Burns
OUT: Mattner, Ladhams, Gallagher, Crowell

Ladhams has been my biggest dissapointment so far this year. Through last year he moved up from being an average player into our top dozen or so and an automatic selection. He's slipped back again this year and is back on the 'to be discussed' list at the selection table.

Bode hasn't been treated too well by the coach and has played pretty well when given a chance.

I'd be reluctant to drop players like Gallagher and Mattner. Sooner or later we're going to have to bite the bullet and give some of the young blokes a bit of rope. I know were focusing on the next couple of years but we can't completely forget the future and are going to have to learn to live with some up and down performances.

Working on Carey, Burns and Burton all playing and Smart missing for another week, I'd place them

B: Hart, Bassett, Torney
HB: Johnstiffy, McGregor, Massie
C: Doughty, Stenglein, Begley
HF: Goodwin, Carey, Edwards
F: Burns, Perrie, Ricciuto
FOLL: Clarke, Bickley, McLeod
I/C : Biglands, Crowell, Burton, Bode

IN: Carey, Burton, Burns
OUT: Mattner, Ladhams, Gallagher,

I feel a bit sorry for Ladhams because I think his recent poor form has been brought on by less and less game time. Got the same feeling that this is what's happening to Bode. I'd like to see him get a really good hit out against the Cats this week.

Ayres clearly has a soft spot for Mattner, so i doubt he will feel the selectors axe this week. Plus, I think he is trying really hard, which is all that can be asked, really.

Will be good to see some first choice fowards back in action, such as Carey, Burns etc..

If we do get all 3 of Carey, Burton and Burns back this week, 3 players have to go.

They have to come from Mattner, Ladhams, Gallagher and Crowell.
Team balance will ultimately decide the 3 to go I guess.

Ben Hart was on Kevin Bartlett's show on Sport 927 this morning and said that Carey is probably still a week away and Stevens two.

Yep, a very important match this one. We have to get off to a good start like last time, but we must convert on it and build on it, which we didn't do last match.

We'll be going in as favourites, but even so, we can't be complacent or take this match lightly. I read on Fridays paper, I think, that Ayres and the coaching team told the players to remember the St. Kilda match, where we probably assumed we would be easy winners. I like that they drilled that warning. We've got to adapt that same attitude in this match too.

Huge huge difference between being 6-4 and 5-5.

You're half-right Stifler ;)

Crowell has done nothing in the last 2 games.

He kept Bradshaw and Brennan quiet in the Brisbane game and kept Brown goal - less once he was moved on him against Doggies. He has negated his opponents in last 2 matches. Considering how dangerous his opponents were I would say he has done a very good job;)

Was Crowell on Bowden in the last quarter? He was caught well short when Bowden marked at half forward to set up the Dogs' only goal of the quarter.

Crowell's form since he has been back in the side has been better than Bassett's. I would be tempted to drop Bassett for a week to send him a message. Crowell or Smart could play on Kingsley.

I'm not so keen on the idea of dropping Bassett. He always tries and is still our best full back. Crowell, on the other hand, is just a fill-in.

Why send bassett a message?

Rooo Goodwin etc etc should be sent a message too in that case.

Bassett has been comprehensively beaten in the last few weeks. He needs to get smarter about his football. Crowell has effectively negated his opponents (although hasn't done much himself).

I was very disappointed by Roo's lack of commitment to chase the opposition on the WE. I reckon is back is playing up & if it is not right, perhaps he should be rested this week with our injured players coming back.

Goodwin whilst still not back to his best is on the improve IMO. His kicking for goals was better on the WE, so hopefully his field kicking will follow.
