MT. BARKER TRIAL

For those who weren’t at the game or have pay TV here are my observations on the match.

These matches are best used to trial new talent and players in other positions and to that end it was ok though for the first part there wasn’t a lot of experimenting going on. When you have your best starting midfield playing and they struggle to get a clearance I must admit it’s also a little worrying.

It was always going to be a struggle defensively with not only missing Zerk-Thatcher but Ratugolea as well. Still that gave an opportunity to trial other talls in the backline and Finlayson will be better for the experience and a possible option amongst others.

SPP and Kane Farrell looked to be injury free now which is great news and will build with confidence. Burton had an injury scare but retuned to the field and hoping no real damage done.

Berry was the obvious stand out amongst the new names and Richards did ok. Lukosius showed he can kick a country mile into the wind but struggled to make much of an impact other than that.

Amongst the regulars JHF was prolific and DBJ, Bergman and Burgoyne did well but overall the Crows dominated when both sides had their A graders on. I also didn’t see any real fast flowing football that was meant to be the theme this year except for maybe for a couple of plays. Most of the structures looked stagnant and the forward entries weren’t any more precise than last year in my observations.

Having said all that I watched a practice match a few years back in Perth where WCE defeated Port easily. Port went on to a prelim and the Eagles won the spoon so it’s not unusual for Port to be sluggish this time of year.

Onto the next trial and hope to see a much more polished performance to give us some better hopes for the season ahead.

Admin Dave

Be careful Admin. I have been called brain dead for stating "Years ago Carlton won the preseason NAB cup and the Wooden spoon in regular season in the same year"

We gained a first rounder which we used on Berry but we traded one out for Lukosius. We need both Berry and Lukosius to turn into guns for the rest of their career just to break even, let alone win.

We effectively gained Berry, Whitlock, Richards and lukosious for Houston and a future first. It’s actually not that bad.

If the future first is pick 5-10, then Lukosius and Whitlock would want to pull their weight in making that deal work favourably for us.

What I've seen of Lukos at training & preseason we paid too much but acknowledge it's early days. Someone needs to demand way more from him & get it. Imo that is the role of the coach & captain.

I cant see this coach and captain demanding more of a highly paid high draft pick. Luko and Rozee are besties and are guaranteed huge long term money.

If we’re going to prefer a forward line with the two talls and five smalls, then Lukosius needs to play like a key forward (CHF) not a flanker. He needs to lead relentlessly, play in front of his opponent, cover marking contests competitively on the wings and at the forward 50 arc and help our backs find him as a target when they are rebounding. If he can’t do those things well, we haven’t recruited the player we need.

Agree. Let's hope Carr demands performance. I'm of the opinion if you don't perform in an Afl game you should be penalised 25% of your game day payments. That might gee them up a bit. Players have way too much power.

With this perspective, Butters being the most fined player ever is a sign that at least he cares about the team in the moment.

To be fair, bwe were underdone relative to our opposition.
And I don't take a lot of notice of trial games.
How many times did Port have crappy pre season form under Jack, and still did reasonably well 🥇🥇🥇

But hopefully with a run under the belt now, and one last gallop before the real stuff starts, we see a bit more oomph from the blokes this week 🙄😕

I agree with this comment but in Lukos defence the over use of short kicks and ring a ring a rosey handballs meant the Crows always had plenty of time to clog up our forward line. It seems like the mindset now is there is no Charlie so no long kicks to the forwards at all. The few times we did move the ball with efficiency we were able to find scoring opportunities. Why can't we ever find the right balance?

Did Finlayson actually play much in defence ? I watch the game and didn’t see him down back much. Then again coverage was crappola.

Because the coach is an idiot, that's why. He actually devised our entire game plan around the most overrated forward that ever was. I sat and watched not believing yet believing what I saw. So bloody predictable.

It's probably more about the Crows gameplan. The Crows have played an ultra defensive, ultra flood game for a while. They thrive off either winning clearances, or counter attack. They have the right players and the right forward movement to make that counter attack work well. It's no coincidence that a lot of their best performances come against sides that push them into that defend first and counter style.

My concern is, the same one it has been for years. That when teams sit back and clog us up, we get absolutely destroyed. When teams make their focus just to stop us scoring, our game plan falls down. It always has. The opposition just chokes us, absorbs our repeat inside 50s until they hit us on the counter, then often pinching a few more cheapies with some momentum.

The fact after all these years we keep banging our heads against a brick wall trying the same damn styles that fail in the same way, over and over, kills me. I have no doubt the team wants to 'move it faster', but if your structure and team rules are still bound by the same requirements, then an oppposition will just push us back into the slow movement and kick long game plan. It's obvious. Teams will all know they can beat us in the air if they make it a contested marking game in our forward half, and they'll focus big time on making sure that they limit our movement to create that.

As much as I hate losing to the Crows, the trial match on Friday didn't really show much other than giving a players a run. The next game against St Kilda will give us a better indication of where we are at. Like the Crows, the Saints will have a point to prove this season and will probably start the game with plenty of intensity to launch their season.

Just feel Port are going through the motions and will probably spend most of the season in this mode with this ridiculous succession plan.

Dont think its been mentioned but i respect the way rioli went pretty high up the ground think he was in defence at one point. For what a lot of people expected to be an unfit pothead, hes having a really solid career in our colors

Benny Barrett gave me glimpses of cyril at some stages, probably the left peg and the movement
