I think I will open another thread so we can talk about 'The Western Sydney Kangaroos' in a dedicated forum.

I'm looking foward to what guys like Shinboners and other Roos fans have to say about where their club is headed.

I think I speak for the majority of Roo fans by saying that we are, generally speaking, happy with what our club's adminstrators are doing.

Provided we play the majority of our games in Melbourne and retain our Arden St base I can't see that Roo fans would have any real objections to us having a second 'home' in Sydney.

We've benefited financially with increased sponsorship etc. and we've gained additional members in Sydney. And, contrary to what many people think, we won't be moving to Sydney given the renovations happening soon to Arden St. (the council pitched in with 1 million plus dollars on the proviso that they remain there for the next 20+ years).

So we'll soon have a brand spanking new home/training base (with facilities open to the public), a fantastic new social club complex, a "home" away from home in Sydney, more cash, more members - how could a Roo fan feel anything but bloody proud to be associated with this dynamic, progressive with it's unashamedly old fashioned Shinboner spirit!

Up here in Sydney we don't often get 'the whole picture' regarding what the Kangaroos plans are for the future. Often up here we get the impression that the Kangaroos are planning to relocate up here lock stock and barrel. Which most observers would agree is not a terribly good move as the size of the market up here ios probably not large enough to sustain two AFL clubs on an ongoing basis.

If however what you say is true when you contend that most Roos fans are generally happy with what the club is doing - how do explain the rather dramatic slump in your Melbourne crowds last season ?

The conventional wisdom at the time was that the Melbopurne supporter base was protesting against the Sydney games strategy - do you think this was the case ?

Look if anyone could pull off this one off the Kangaroos could, but I repeat it must be done properly with these outcomes in mind.

1) Establish a second home in Sydney without alienating the Melbourne supporter base.

2) Do it so as to not dilute the already small (and rather fickle) Sydney Aussie Rules Market.

3) Establish a supporter base that is distinct from the Swans

Its not going to be easy but there is one factor that the Roos could use to their advantage. Up here in Sydney the Swans draw their supporter base from the Lower North Shore and Ease=tern suburbs. Support for the Swans in the vast densly populated Western and South-Western areas is weak at best. Also the South Western edge of Sydney (from Campbelltown to Gouldburn to Canberra)is a big Aussie Rules area. The local SFL team Campbelltown is powerhouse of local football and of course Canberra has always been an Aussie Rules town.

If the Kangaroos want to be successful up here they should stop trying to 'poach' Swans fans and instead try to open up a whole new market for themselves in the South West. This is why I think the Roos would do well in considering

1) Using Monarch Field in Campbelltown as their Sydney training and practice match base

2) Playing at least 1 home game every year in Canberra.

Whichever way it goes - its going to be very interesting time down at Roo-land over the next couple of years.

Arn't people in a fickle (as you said) market place allowed a choice, if your supporters let the Roos poach them, you must have a poor product, Don't blame us blame yourself.

You are almost as bad as Brisbane.
 
If (and that's a big if!) the Roos move lock stock and barrel to Sydney, that would be a far better option than what happened to Fitzroy. Have a look at what happened when they merged (were overtaken) by Brisbane.

That is you retain your history, colours, players and tradition.

So take it from a Roos fan if it came down to it, I personally would much rather relocation than merger. At least I would be able to go and support the Roos as they stand (ie as a separate entity!!!)

and his theory that the whole thing was masterminded by the brisbane board? what like he's all of a sudden Fox Mulder and this is a whole X-Files case or something.

I do not want to see the Roos roll over and die - far from it.

I'm just trying to highlight some of the difficulties the Kangaroos are up against in their Sydney strategy and maybe suggest some ways they can be more successful up here (if that what they want)

What I am basically saying is that the Roos strategy to date isn't working and instead of trying to pinch Swans fans they should instead be working to build up their own distinct supporter base, preferably in the South West Sydney area where some semblance of an Aussie Rules culture already exists.

As an Aussie Rules fan living in a Rugby city I am despearte to see the game grow and become more popular here in the years ahead so its in everyones best interest (especially yours) that the Kagaroos succeed up here.

For the 50 millionth time I am not having a go at North or North people.

They are a great team who play a terrific style of footy and I went to every one of their Sydney games last year and had a great time watching them play.

Look, I'm just trying to stimulate a discussion on where the club is going, especially in regards to their plans up here in Sydney.

Gotta stick up for Bloodstained Angel here. He hasn't written anything that us North fans should get hot and bothered about.

He has made some good points, especially in relation to how the Kangaroos and Swans could divide up the Sydney market. The last thing North need are Swans fans who jump from one bandwagon to the next....these people will never become loyal Kangaroos. In effect, we have to develop new fans and that will take a lot of time, effort, and hardwork. That means the club has to spend time in Sydney, taking clinics, visiting schools, cultivating the sport among children. It is the kids that will drag their parents to the football, not the other way around. And if you don't believe me, one word.....Pokemon.

Look, North's people in Sydney have tried to poach Swans members....the Swans are justifiably upset. I'll point out here that Angel wrote about this in a pretty calm manner....no abuse, no overblown language, just a statement of facts. But likewise, the Swans haven't exactly done the right thing by North either....look at Richard Colless and his conflict of interest. On the one hand, he's on the Swans board. On the other, he's on the committee (he might even be the chairman) that's supposed to develop football in New South Wales. In the latter job, he has clearly favoured the Swans and done bugger all to help North.

The thing is, we want to survive and flourish. So do the Swans. Do we take the attitude of John Elliot and "crash through or crash"? Or do we work together do develop the Sydney market together? I just feel that if North and the Swans stop the politicking and backstabbing and sit down and work out something *together*, both clubs will get far more benefit from a co-ordinated approach than to take their own separate roads and trying to sabotage each other's efforts.

Your point about Richard Colless is pertinent. He should start the renconciliation process between the two clubs by resigning his position on the NSW development board (right name ?) immediately
 
Another incisive, pertinent comment from Long John, who totally mis-read what Blood-stained Angel said. I agree with much of what Blood-Stained Angel said in what North should be doing in Sydney.

If the choice came between merging with another club or relocation, I'd relocate any day, so that we could keep our players, history, tradition intact. The Swans have done it, Fitzroy half did it with Brisbane, in that they kept their colours, club song and their history. Far better that we move lock, stock and barrel to Sydney than die a lingering death in Melbourne. We won't be powerful on the field forever and soon the time may very well arrive when some hard decisions may have to be made about the future of the North Melbourne footy club in Melbourne.

I'm also not sure that the money from the council for the re-development of Arden Street will be forthcoming. It's been talked about for several years now and nothing seems to be happening.

I took your comments at face value which is why I responded in the first place. It's
been great hearing your (Swans) perspective on what our club is doing.

I agree with your comments about North needing to develop their own turf and,
essentially, Shinboner summed up my feelings about the matter. I personally feel the
AFL are to blame for not overseeing the Sydney push as it should have. They basically handed North a few thousand dollars and offered little other assistance, support or advice. This year, apparently, they're doing things differently so it would be interesting to see how things go. You might want to fill us in at some stage?

With regards to our support (or lack of) in Melbourne, I’m at a loss to explain it. Our
membership figures (thanks to the interstate members) are the best they’ve ever been
and we’re only four weeks into the season. The people who haven’t renewed their
memberships have been canvassed by the club and apparently sited other reasons
(mainly financial) for not renewing. Obviously some fans (mostly non-members) have
dropped off the bandwagon in protest to our playing games in Sydney. They want the
club to remain as it was. The reality is if we hadn’t played some games in Sydney, we wouldn’t have posted a profit in 1999. This reality fails to penetrate the minds of some ‘fans’ who want it like it was.

I still believe if we maintain our current level of support and gain similar support in Sydney, we’ll be doing pretty good. And, ultimately, if we do relocate to Sydney it will be fully on our terms and wholly our club. I’d rather that than what happened to Fitzroy.

Kanga, apparently the Arden St redevelopment had been stalled because the club didn’t
agree with proposed location of its administrative offices. This has been sorted out so work should commence mid-year.

I'm gonna go to allthe Roos games here in Sydney again this season and I'll let you know how it goes up here. And yes, it would be nice to see the AFL get behind the Roos a little more than they did last year.

The Roos did not do TOO badly up here last year. They averaged around 12,000 or so with 18,000 showing up for the West Coast game and about 24,000 for the Swans game but more importantly, all four games were of an excellent quality which really entertained and I hope for everyones sake they can turn it on again this year.

PS: Troy is doing really well, settling into the backline nicely, and I noticed last night he has taken over the kickin responsibilities.

the cry babies bore me too much, was Adam in drag for the game or has he died his hair, did I miss something important, I doubt it.

PS Colley, Troy is starting to settle in very nicely indeed, now we only need Byron to enjoy himself up forward.
 
Joel, I read some funny things on Niks BB, sounds like the Collingwood Cry Babies aare starting to fire up.
