Thought Id start this thread to keep up to date with the latest on the likely Cups chances, starting with this season's 3yo's who probably look our best chance of keeping the Big 2 in Australia

Post your opinions/news etc as we go,starting with these horses, adding any that jump out of the ground as we head towards late Spring.

FIUMICINO,EFFICIENT,TUESDAY JOY,ESKIMO QUEEN,GORKY PARK,ANAMATO,SIR JAMES,EMPIRE'S CHOICE

NB:As this is a Cups thread, have left out those headed for Cox Plate etc.
If someone wants to start a WFA thread, feel free.

FIUMICINO:softest Derby win Ive seen in 20yrs,was he flattered by the wet track? Can obviously stay but history is against him

EFFICIENT:looked anything in the Spring but gave us nothing in a couple of guest appearances in Autumn.

TUESDAY JOY:already beaten the older GP 1 mares, got lost in the AJC Oaks.Has to conquer the Gai in Melbourne in Spring factor.

ESKIMO QUEEN:Looked a world beater in Brisbane before losing Childs in the Derby, still lightly raced.

seth

GORKY PARK:Looked to have made real progress in the Autumn when competitive in everything, then skipped Brisbane

ANAMATO:Who knows where she's headed?

SIR JAMES:Scopy Cummings stayer who ran well prior to the Derby before getting lapped on the bog track.

EMPIRES CHOICE:Has had a boom since 2 & finally produced in Brisbane, not sure if he's a true stayer?

Don't rate 4yo's in the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup i do though.

For the CC, of those seth mentioned i'd rank them

Efficient / Fiumcino
Tuesday Joy
Sir James
Gorky Park
Anamato
Empire's Choice
Eskimo Queen - don't know much about this horse, but Brisbane form is usually poor.

Don't know what these horses are up to but seemed promising at one stage

Danever - liked its Derby run. Looked a winner at one point.
The One - had a couple of impressive victories.
Ankh Morpork - was a tease but looked a stayer at least.

You only seem lucky to get 1 or 2 good horses though out of the Derby each year though let alone many...I paid the price following Headturner last year, besides the big Sydney derby win where he paid $2

The One has been sold to Hong Kong, havent seen Danever since he ran last in the AJC Derby

I am not one to back Tuesday Joy usually but I feel as though it'll right there in the Caulfield Cup finish. Has a very bright future.

Michael Rodd has cut ties with Lloyd, baasically surrendering the ride on EFFICIENT for the Spring.

They say jockeys are the worst judges, interesting timing though?

I wouldnt be rushing out to back Efficient myself. VRC Derby winners dont win Cups the following season. Elvstroem was the first in 50 years.

Mummify was a late bloomer at 3,he actually ran in the Carbine Club (1600m) on Derby Day.
Got his act together in Sydney in the Autumn, placed in both the Rosehill Guineas & the AJC Derby before winning the SAJC Derby.

I was looking forward to backing Ambitious General was about the same as Fiumicino and would have been half the odds. Unfortunately he's off to Hong Kong.

Just heard that NZ Derby runner up Mettre En Jeu is now with Freedman

seth

Yep he is,dont know too much about him but he was placed in 2 Guineas & the Derby before failing on the heavy in the AJC Derby.

METTRE EN JEU resumes in R2 over 1600m at Caulfield tomorrow
SIR JAMES resumes in R4 over 1400m in Sydney tomorrow.

Wouldnt be surprised to see either/both run ok fresh
