•Curley departs Fremantle
Tue, Mar 27, 12

Fremantle assistant coach Todd Curley is leaving the club to take advantage of an opportunity to work outside of football.

Curley, who joined the club as an assistant coach in 2008, advised the playing group of his decision today after having told general manager of football operations Chris Bond at the weekend of his decision to leave the club.

The former coach of West Perth (2006-08), who played 118 AFL games including 115 with the Western Bulldogs and three with Collingwood between 1994 and 2001, told the players he had made a lifestyle decision to leave the AFL industry.

“I have a young family and after almost 20 years as a player and a coach in what is a very demanding industry, I felt it was time to explore other opportunities outside of football and also be able to spend more time with my family,” Curley said.

“The opportunity to take up a new challenge, which I am really excited about and is outside of football, only arose in the past week or so and is the reason why I am leaving the club at such short notice.

“Having said that, it was a tough decision to leave now because under Ross Lyon and his coaching team, the playing group is as well placed at any time in my tenure at the club to achieve the success Fremantle members and supporters have been seeking since the club’s inception.”

General manager of football operations Chris Bond said that the club accepted and understood the reasons behind Curley’s decision to seek a career change.

“Todd has had a very positive influence on both the playing group and the club during his time at Fremantle,” Bond said.

“Although the timing is not ideal, we accept and understand the reasoning behind Todd’s decision. We thank Todd for his contribution to the Fremantle Football Club and wish Todd, Paula, Thalia and Aiden all the very best for the future.”

So who are FFC going to get as a replacement now? or will the club even bother?

More questions need to be raised about Chris Bond's effectiveness. Assistant coach leaving four days before the season starts is hardly ideal.

And he still hasn't got this new stadium built for us either! Sack him.

It's very strange timing. Bond is responsible for the footy department is he not?
If Curley isnt enthusiastic and his heart isnt in it then it's all for the best really. Good luck to him.

Should we replace him? Would there be any quality people available at this stage?

Not at all. Do we really need a coach to leave immediately prior to the season? I have serious doubts about Bond's ability at managing the football dept. This is just another example of poor management.

If the article can be taken at face value it wasn't anything Bond could have foreseen.

Sometimes things just happen. You don't always have to run around looking for someone to blame.

Why?

Because a life situation outside Bonds control arose, Curley weighed up the pro's and cons and decided to take advantage of that choice?

Let's not forget Bond helped secure the services of one of the top 4 coaches in the league.

It's a massive stretch.

I can't see how this has anything to do with poor management. The only thing he could do is force him to see out his contract. Pretty poor by Curley though.

Not much Bondy could do if it was his Curley's choice to leave. We wouldn't want to keep him if his heart wasn't in it...

I don't get it. Why does there have to be somebody to blame? Bond or anybody else?
The industry is a 7 day a week venture for at least 9mths of the year. Hardly family friendly. I also imagine, for those who aren't in the upper echelons, it isn't particularly lucrative. I would guess that an assistant might get 75-80K a year?? (pure guess work).
If somebody in business has offered him a significant pay rise and he has taken it, with the ability to spend more time with kids & family, then how is this anybody's "fault". Bizzare suggestion for mine. OK the timing isn't ideal for a football club, but people move employment all the time, that is just a fact of business.

He might have even been asked to leave?
Maybe his performance was less than what is required and The Boss sent him on his way.

I would not think we'd run a coach short. We'll get someone in, it'll be interesting to see who.

As echoed by others, clearly this is something out of our control. He's obviously been faced with a job prospect too good to pass up, allowing him also to spend less time away from his family. If Curley getting a once in a lifetime job opportunity is Bond's fault then light the torches. I'd put that down to more of a reflection of Curley not being totally honest with the club on his intentions if he's been looking for the door.

As most experienced coaches/ex-coaches are already coaching in lesser leagues, an ex player might relish the opportunity to get the call up from a state league somewhere. I don't doubt that we'll fill the position sooner rather than the 2012/13 offseason.

One interesting thing to note is that there doesn't seem to be a great sense of loss evident amongst us all. When Scott left we were collectively wringing our hands and hoping the sky wouldn't fall on our heads (it did, but that's another story). In this case the tribe has not spoken and I am therefore more confident that he won't leave a gaping hole.

He's one of many (six to seven) from the football department to voluntarily leave in the past 18 months outside of the fallout from the Harvey-Lyon coup, and without receiving a substantial promotion at another club. Last year we went in understaffed in the coaches box, and it looks like this year we will too, though not as badly.

That kind of turnover and a coach leaving not long before the season starts hardly suggests the person heading the footy department is on top of things.

Yes I agree 100%
Last season after a home game I was walking back to my car and it started raining and I got wet. Chris Bond was responsible for that as well;)

Suma has been both a midfield and forward coach. He may pick up the slack. Can't imagine the club bringing in just anyone to fill a spot.
Personally, I can understand Todd's decision, but it would depend on an individual's priorities in life.

Psychology 101 Clay. Not everything in life is controllable.

Let's wait until we get the whole story before we start sacking everyone.:)
