Amazing stuff. Not sure such a story would be possible today though with the communications technology we have now (internet, phones, television, and so forth).

On Reddit the board "Today I Learned" is riddled with stories like these. Just amazing she is still kicking it on the mountain.

Certainly makes you roll your eyes in comparison when you hear people refer to modern luxuries such as smartphones et al. as 'necessities'

She will never know the pleasure of using an iPad.

I guess is similar to the way they kept finding Japanese soldiers in the 60s and 70s on pacific island who were convinced that WW2 was still going.

Unbelievable. I wouldn’t have even thought there was anywhere on earth where there’s 150-odd miles without civilisation. Is that stupid?
Anywhere on earth? There's most of Australia for a start!

The way I read it, there was no humans whatsoever for 150-odd miles in any direction. Would that be the case in Australia?

Given I’ve only been on roads, but there’s roadhouses, indigenous settlements and farms everywhere.

The North/South Poles.

150 miles is 241.4km.

Humans live where they can work to get money or routinely grow/hunt things to eat.

Unless there's resources to mine or scientific study to be done or other specific paid roles humans don't live where it's very cold or very hot with limited natural benefits.

Hence Alice Springs is the metropolis of Australia's deserts.

what a story, thanks for sharing it. It really makes you realise many of the things we cherish are small and insignificant when it comes to the trials and tribulations of this family
