In fairness to the very young it ended almost 70 years ago. But yeah they're probably dim kids.

I guess is similar to the way they kept finding Japanese soldiers in the 60s and 70s on pacific island who were convinced that WW2 was still going.

The way I read it, there was no humans whatsoever for 150-odd miles in any direction. Would that be the case in Australia?

Humans live where they can work to get money or routinely grow/hunt things to eat.

Unless there's resources to mine or scientific study to be done or other specific paid roles humans don't live where it's very cold or very hot with limited natural benefits.

Hence Alice Springs is the metropolis of Australia's deserts.
