Just wondering if you could shed some light for me on a typical pathway a talented young road or track rider would take to become a professional rider.

Find a club and a coach!! get racing. From what I've seen there's more of a structured pathway for track riders through the various sports institutions

Have you got any idea of a basic pathway that a track rider would take?

I know that DISC the velodrome in Melbourne hold come and try days that could be a good start, If you're in Vic the Cycling Victoria website has heaps of info on how to get involved, clubs near you and so forth!

How old? Think most track riders come through VIS/AIS squads. Roadies can make it from anywhere, interview here with a kid who has only been riding about 2 years, now almost a pro.
