Riding a bicycle, of course, not a motorcycle.

So who here does it?

This morning was my first time - finally got sick of the delays on the bus due to roadworks and thought I'd give it ago.

Was mostly prepared but no bathmat for the shower which is not pleasant. What are the showers/end of trip facilities like at your workplace?

I'm a bit annoyed there's nowhere really to hang your towel and clothes to dry - not too bad today but when it warms up it will be rather yuck.

Have done it for 95% of my trips to work and Uni for the past four years -

I love it - Both work and Uni is about 12-15kms away, 40 minute ride on average (depending on head/tail wind) so it's a nice work out -

I don't worry about showers etc (well, there are none at my work) so I just take a change of clothes

Edit: - There isn't too many better feelings than flying past cars stuck in traffic on St Kilda Road at 5.15pm :thumbsu: - Cannot understand why you would even contemplate driving to work in conditions like that

Positives:

It's good exercise
It's free (once you have a bike)
It's often quicker than driving/PT and less stressful

Negatives:

Motorists want to kill you
Most workplaces aren't set up with lockers, showers etc. so you end up with sweaty people near you or walking past you through the office to get to their stuff.
RE: above, lycra. I work in a building full of middle aged men who feel the need to dress up like Cadel Evans to ride to work. Lycra is like breasts - on a woman amazing, on a man disgusting. Australia says no to lycra. If you have to wear a full leotard to ride a bike then at least have the decency to not wear it through an office where people are working.

As a youngin I used to ride to work everyday. Like above, there is nothing better when you pass cars that are stuck at the lights or just traffic congestion.

I have done it a couple of times but riding in from Perth's northern beach side suburbs can be a bit tricky. There is no set path along the Mitchell freeway so it can be a bit of a pain.

Hopefully the local councils finally get together and sort out a bike path all the way to the city from joondalup.

Yeah the Mitchell PSP is pretty piss poor, especially at Glendalough, Hutton Street and Hertha Road.

The last place I worked that had decent facilities, I used to ride 4 or 5 days a week. Every sixth or seventh day I'd drive and take in a fresh batch of shirts.

Yep, love it! Takes about the same time as the bus, keeps me fit and saves $$$. What's not to like?

I'm fairly careful with my route though. Mostly back/side streets then that bike path stretch along the front of the SCG before I hit the city, where the traffic's too slow to be dangerous. I'm also conservative when it comes to right of way. Even when I have it, I'll keep a close watch on any car that might ignore that fact. I don't want my tombstone to read "He died even though he had right of way".

Haven't cycled yet but a couple of weeks ago I walked to work. 70 kilometres, took me 12 hours. Had to get my brother to pick me up after a 7 hour shift as I could hardly move and he rocked up in my ******* car so I didn't even save any petrol...

What the ****?

Seriously?

I ride. It's a 30 minute bike ride to work along pleasant bike paths.

The facilities here a woeful. However i don't ride fast and don't break a sweat so actually don't need a shower when i arrive.

The last place i worked had amazing facilities, complete with irons, hair dryers and straighteners and a fresh towel service.

I WANT

Stupid shitty old office buildings

Yeah this was when i worked at the docklands for one of the big four banks. They built this amazing building and designed incredible locker room facilities.

Was the only good thing about working there though. I'd take my current job with it's pathetic building and shocking facilities any day.

Yeah wasn't my greatest idea but at least now I can say I've done it. Left home at 3am and got to work at 3pm before starting at 5. Cockatoo Valley to Blackwood

Actually turns out it's only around 60kms, but there are some ****ing steep hills along the way so I definitely felt every kilometre.

And what were you trying to achieve here?

I do - 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. Fortunate to have decent shower facilities at work.
Moring ride can be tough (gym before work) - especially leg days.

According to google maps I live 1.1km from work (in the Ballarat CBD, if it classes as a CBD). I enjoy the 5-10min walk to/from each day, especially the from.

that is absolutely remarkable.

I also think its remarkable that you live so far from work, even if you drive normally - wowee

I remember one night years ago a couple of us rode home to Salisbury from the city in the middle of the night on our shitty bmx bikes while we were on acid.....

I feel like your walk would have been even more epic than that

Cockatoo Valley to Blackwood? Walking? What the actual ****.

Anyway I rode to work 4 times a week (Fridays I caught the bus to change clothes and for Fri night drinks) until my bike was stolen. Only about 6ks, an easy 20 minute ride.
