harper how is ryan moppa holt goin in the 2's ? chance of playin 1's at all ?

Moppa played a quarter in the ones on Saturday NQR after playing a ripper game in the twos.

Speaking of the twos, fantastic feeling in the rooms as we got ourselves back on the winners list, well done to all the boys, it was a great way to bounce back after the disappointing previous two weeks. Still have plenty of room for improvement which will come when we can finally play with more than one on the bench.

Were the Banyule Bears training on their ground during the pre-season?
If so I'm glad we were banned from using ours all summer as the one out at Heidelburg is a disaster while most others I've seen have bounced back well.
Apart from the oval though the Bears have fantastic facilities, large change rooms and a great bar and outdoor deck. Great to be able to have a froffy in a glass pot after the final siren. Would rival A section facilities if they had grass on the oval.

It's always been bad out their Harp's, I remember playing their about six years ago and it was the same. I know that they have a strong junior club, so the ground I would presume gets alot of footy played on it. Not sure if they have ever tried to do anything about it, but they should bite the bullet and take a year off it in the near future.

I witnessed the incident. The Glen Eira player obviously found something on the ground (think it was a $2 coin) and removed it form the playing field. Not over the fence but just placed it over the boundary line. It was definately not thrown at the Werribee supporters. I am pretty sure if he did throw it at the Werribee boys something would have come out of it. After removing the object he said something along the lines of "go buy yourselves a personality".
The Werribee "faithfull" obvioulsy took offence to that and decided to hurl the coin at the Glen Eira player's direction. It missed him and hit their own captain. The captain was not to pleased with his fellow teamates and proceeded to give them an almighty spray.
We really dont need these kind of incidents occuring.[/quote]

He must of had 15 meter arms because that's how far away he was from the boundary line he was

I think we are certainly starting to see where everybody is at. Aquinas and SMD clearly the teams to beat, and Werribee hot on their tails. The race for fourth is hot, with St Leos, Banyule, Glen Eira and St Johns all going neck and neck. It's very even in D2!

How many wins does everyone think will get you into the top 4 this year?

I would say 11 with a good percentage would probably get you into a final. So with 11 games left to win everyone is still a mathamatical chance. Here are my thoughts of each sides final hopes.

Sth Melb - Look very good coming up a grade. I just wonder if sides will work them out the second time they play them. Only loss was to the Bees at the smelly suburb. Still tipping them to finish top 2.

Aquinas - Should finish on top. Have only lost to Glen Eira when they kicked 11.27. Have beaten Werribee and St johns at home

Werribee - Are looking strong at the moment. Can they keep it up? Lost to Banyule in the first week (will end up being the upset of the year), and Aquinus at Aquinus. My tip is that they will start to fade and finish in a group of teams fighting for spots 3 & 4

St Leos - Have snuck under the radar on this forum. Should have beaten South and will be hard to beat at home. Am expecting them to be fighting but may just miss finals action

Banyule - Total unknown. Could do anything after beating Werribee and losing to St Johns, I think that they will start to show their true colours and fall down the ladder throughout the year.

St Johns - How many home games have they got left??? Answer is 5. They can not win away from home and as a result will not get to the 11 games needed.

Glen Eira - Another side loving home at the moment. Only side to beat Aquinus, and should be in with a fighting chance to snap up spots 3 or 4. % could be a problem.

Bentleigh - With only two wins this year they will need a lot of luck. Am expecting them to move down the ladder rather than up unfortunatly.

Williamstown - Can they find what they need to win the close one's. To good of a side to be only 1 - 6 at this stage. Got the home ground back and will have a strong second half of the year. Will need to win 10 of last 11 to make finals, which I don't think they can do.

Salesian - My personal shock of the year so far. Had a good side last year and should really be in contention. I am not expecting too much for the next 11 weeks and will need alot of luck to stay above 9th on the ladder.

Game on!!

With the season starting to unfold, and clubs beginning to sort themselves out , i was interested in the younger players at clubs in the D2 section..perhaps people from the clubs could name players between say 18-21 and how they are travelling in senior footy/players to look out for to liven up this thread a little ?

Also, which players would be in contention for the d2 half team of the year and there position ? cheers lads. :thumbsu:

Players from SMD who would have to be in the side from the districts would be Paul Cheevers, Sam Atherton, and Steven Aqualina. There are others but im sure you would only take 3-4 from each side and these 3 have been most consistent.

From Glen Eira the standout is Chris Massis. Number 1 or 2 from Werribee that quick small forward.

Bentleigh's captain James Robertson from what i hear would be right up there??

As for the 18-21 year olds, i also come to believe the demons have a couple coming through the ranks!

18-21 year olds ?

S.Frost - Bentleigh (I'm pretty sure falls into this age group)
N. Braddy - Banyule (picked in the state U19 squad)

D2 1/2 year nominations from SMD to add to saints' -Kohnesheen, M Costello, Simm, Mahoney.

i hear from bentleigh that the last two weks they have had sides with around 15 blokes under the age of 21 playing in the 1s and around 3 or 4 more under 19s that might have a crack in the 1s this year. seems like the future of bentleigh in the ammos is not looking to shabby with a fair bit of youth

I disagree with a couple of those harper. A few of those have been very inconsistent and at half year point you have to go for consistency. Although everyone has there own opinion.
Seeing its half way point of the year everyone pick you top 4,grand final, premiers, league b n' f and leading goalkicker.

Grand Final: SMD v Aquinas
Premiers: SMD
Top 4: SMD, Aquinas, Werribee, Glen Eira
League bn'f: Paul Cheevers
Goalkicker: Chris Sharp

You and harper might need to have a chat because i dont think we need 7 nominees from SMD for the half year team! As for the grand final pick, i'll wait until i have seen SMD and Banyule before i make a call.

I would suggest Aquinas players in line for the half year team would be Maaskant, Toomey, and inspirational captain Whitehead, if not one or two others.

If you read previous posts i only nominated 3 and i stand by those. Dont think the others would be in the half way mark team.

Whilst it isn't quite half year & therefore haven't played every side, I will have a crack:

Grand Final: Werribee v Aquinas
Premiers: Werribee
Top 4: SMD, Aquinas, Werribee, St Leos
League bn'f: Leigh Toomey or James Robertson
Goalkicker: Chris Sharp

Premeirs: Aquinas, they will get better as the season goes, tibb is starting to put it together.
Top 4: Aquinas, Werribee, SMD and Banyule
League bnf...taylor from willi polled very well last year, won;t have many guys take votes of him, i think hazell is a big chance again and as a roughie i will throw in morello from Bosco Street.

If its true that Werribee supporters did throw a coin at a player then Werribee should step in and make sure those supporters are not at any more games. There is no more anyone can stick up for those kind of people. If things like that happen it wont be long until there is unrest in the crowd between opposing fans. We do not want this. Banter is fine but when it gets violent thats out of line. Same goes for any officials, officiate the game and thats it.
I would like to know more on this as i wasnt there. I hope it was all a misunderstanding

Good footy talk this week

Grand Final: Aquinas v St Leos
Premiers: St Leos - Aquinas have got massive upside and are the team to beat - Tibb, Den Braber just hitting their straps but on the day hopefully we can do it.
Top 4: Aquinas, SMD, Werribee and St Leos
League B&F...Paul Cheevers (SMD), Cameron Lee (W'bee) should go well.

Cheers

Come on SAINTS, I no you want some1 to come out and say you should be in the team of the year, as you keep saying that you keep getting the ball even though you are a large boy and you were 1 of the main reasons Port Colts won back to back flags as 1 of there big recruits.
Well you just have to work harder of the ball and stop complaining to the umpires and give the 1st option off and then we may consider you.

Nice summary Game On - you only have 3 teams making the top 4 though by your comments - on that basis St Leo's are next best on the list so we'll take 4th

The team just seems to be getting better and better together. Aquinas are a strong side and will use their more experienced players to get them to the grand final. Werribee's pace and hunger to win out.

Top 4: Aquinas, Werribee, SMD and Banyule

League B&F: Hazell will have to go close to winning. Cheevers will be top 5. Would love to see Renaut (W'Bee) win it. Go Turbo.

Terrific week on the thread, and good to get back to footy!

For Mine - I'll go with a St Leo's v Aquinas granny. Aquinas the best team I've seen, although haven't seen Glen Eira or Werribee.
I'll go with St Leo's flag - only through blind loyalty, will have to play out of their skins to beat the Aquinas outfit.
Top 4 - Aquinas, St Leo's, SMD, Werribee
B&F - Cheevers - best individual game I've seen this year vs us.
Goal kicking - Sharp.
Early nominations for half team of the year - Cheevers (SMD), Hazell, Mallett(Salesian), Maaskant, Tibb(Aquinas), Sharp, Martin(Bentleigh), Clemmens, Wong(Williamstown)

And to kick off this weeks tipping:

Bentleigh v SMD - SMD should have this covered comfortably, and the SMD bandwagon is rolling along nicely. Bentleigh back on the winners list, will give them some confidence, and at home, they are some chance - but I'll go with SMD by 5 goals. As always, the result and margin will depend on Sharp, Martin and Roberston for Bentleigh.

Williamstown CYMS v Glen Eira - Going with Willy here, have been desperately unlucky all year, and deserve a win. On a massive ground, I'm tipping the leg speed of Clemmens, Wong etc will be too much for salesian, although as always expect them to put up a fight. Where Willy might be in trouble, is I can't see they have a match up for Mallett, who is a quality forward. Mallett needs to kick a bag for Salesian to win - but Willy by 2 goals for mine.

Glen Eira v St Leo's - Glen Eira always a tough propositon, particularly at Packer Park. St Leo's travelling along OK, and hopefully will have a couple of ins this week, which will make a big difference. St Leo's to make it four on the trot, and win their second in a row away.

Banyule v Aquinas - Massive danger game for Aquinas this week, away against Banyule. Banyule need to get back on the winners list, but I feel that Aquinas has too much class. Aquinas by a goal.

Werribee v St Johns - write your own ticket on St Johns getting up here. The longest road trip in D2, and they don't play well away from home at the best of times. Let's hope Werribee have sorted out the coin thrower, and I'm sure that VAFA HQ will be watching down there this week. Werribee by plenty.

Good luck to all this weekend
