Re: now for the serious gear

Practice Games! How come RC v Monash isn't mentioned on the VAFA site?

Have you ordered umpires yet???

Generally games are only added when umpires are requested!!

The vafa don't recognise any football activity unless they profit from it in some way.

I too have heard that wb have recruited lots of new blokes but they did that last year as well. I agree its better to have heaps to choose from even if the majority are only twos players, but a strong ressies team didn't help either them or kew last year now did they!?

no offence to either team intended.

richmond v monash should be a good game, monash not doing that well for the last few years and richmond on the rise.

Hey every1,

For a change im not posting to try inspire contraversy (crap spelling i know, theres no predictive text or spellcheck!), but im trying to set up a practice match for the 5th of april if anyone is willing and would like to play Uni High as our 2nd option fell through. If any teams are interested pls let me know.

We may be able to use our ground, Brens Oval or are happy to play away!

Ta

Hey... has anyone else had their practice matches cancelled or relocated for this weekend? City of Yarra moved our match from KB and I have heard that many other matches/teams are affected. There seems to be a bunch of teams requesting practice matches all of a sudden.

Loving the rain... but it is the reason our game was moved ... so they are reseeding this week.

The two standouts look to be West Brunswick, who were unlucky to drop from D3 and should to return in 09 while St Francis Xavier should advance in their first year after dominating the clubbies comp. West Brunswick won't lose at home and this may be St Francis Xaviers only loss for the season.

With a new coach, Kew will be tough at home, especially after playing good quality opposition in 2007. They should comfortably make the finals

Mt Lilydale are always competitive and are a chance to sneak into D3 next year if they have enough depth to field 2 good sides. A long trip out there and should win at least 7 games at home

Box Hill North & Albert Park will be battling it out for the final position in Late August / September. Really tough to split these two at the moment but the competition for players in Albert Park is intense so I'm going to go with BH.

Can Richmond's resurgance continue and see them make the finals for the first time since they dropped back from D3 in 2003? Would certainly be a talking point across all the VAFA, except the grades where they don't realise there's anything below B grade.

Look for South Mornington to improve on their first up effort last year. A young team all a year older now with more juniiors coming through. Will be a force in a few years but probably not just yet.

Syndal Tally Ho will continue to finish mid table unless they can get some of their stars back or find some new talent. Not much seems to be happening down at Mt Waverley lately.

North Brunswick will win about 4 games again beating the teams below them. won't trouble anyone above about 9th

Eley Park will have 2 great battles with BHN and beat Bulleen Cobras twice. Possibly 3 wins

Bulleen Cobras look a cenrtainty to be a mid table team in a new D5 division next year

Rooster - any updates on the market mate?

I was typing out an e-mail to a mate & thought that I'd post the contents on here to see what others thought........

A quick summation:

  • West Brunswick – likely to be very good after winning 6 games in D3 last year & being desperately unlucky to be relegated.
  • Kew – similar to above, although they have been ‘old’ for a while & some of them may have retired now they’re back in D4 or stayed on thinking they were a chance for another flag. Big question marks about them.
  • St Francis Xavier – first year in. Very good apparently in Clubbies last year & expected to be players this year, although there are questions about depth, similar to Mt Lilydale last year.
  • Mt Lilydale – you’d expect them to be better for a year back in D4, and they were good last year. Big watch. Tough to know too much as they’re pretty quiet.
  • Box Hill North – steadily improving over the last few years & no reason to assume this won’t continue. A
  • Albert Park – news on Tuesday night was that they’re off their ground for the first 5 weeks of the season. This always hurts them & hard to see them playing finals if they don’t start winning early.
  • Richmond Central – definitely stronger than last year is the word. I’d be surprised to see them play finals, but they are gradually changing to a wining culture again, so they’re a chance.
  • Syndal Tally Ho – will win their share of games, but probably won’t play finals.
  • South Mornington – are they going to improve on their first half of last year; or are they going south with players going back to local leagues? (Like the rumours say…..) We’ll know by round 4….. Unknowns…..
  • North Brunswick – have lost players back to Trinity (I think) & will struggle this year.
  • Eley Park – started to improve last year & the word is they’ve continued to recruit well. Will push up towards the centre of the table.
  • Bulleen Cobras – definitely improved on last year, but would need to improve by 10 goals plus per game turnaround for anyone to notice.
Any comments?

I was speaking to a friend last night (who grew up in Berwick) and he knows lots of the boys who play for SFX. He said they will be very very good and he is tipping them for the flag.

With inside knowledge like that surely they should be flag favourites.

Games this week.
Cobras v Old westbourne
Kew V Uni High
Richmond V Monash

Any thoughts.

Richmond Central V Monash...

Moved from KB to Vic Park this saturday due to reseeding of KB...

...and now....

Called off completely due to Vic Park becoming a swamp today... aparently.

Gosh darn it.

I'm going to be bold (cause I'm in a sh*t mood), and say that this entire list is full of cr@p. It's D4...anything could happen and no one knows how well every other team has recruited.

It will be interesting to know the results of the few intra D4 matches being played over the next few weeks. But I wouldn't rely too much on the match reports either.

In Short... Bollocks.

Oh... BTW... If anyone wants a practice match this weekend we're free :) (Must provide own ground!!!!!!!!!!)

I'm in a good mood & I know it's crap.

However, I'm only going by what I know from last year & what I've read & heard... We're all being cautious on here, which is exactly what our clubs would want us to be....

Anyway, good luck with getting as game this weekend! We've got Old Westbourne, which given their position last year, and the fact that our match was supposed to be Saturday, and is now Sunday (as at last night) & we've traditionally struggled in the west, could be anything!

Old Westbourne will destroy the Cobras

Too Good for D3 = Too Good for Cobras

Pommy - with a new coach unfamiliar with most of the players the requirement was to get a hit out & start to use some of the structures we've been working on at training.

We're just looking forward to having a workout on someting shaped like an oval. Our training has mostly been completed on a stretch of ground about 100 metres long & 40 metres wide. (I'm sure we're not alone there..)

If Westbourne don't beat us they've got their work cut out in D2, but hopefully we can be competitive enough to give them something of a work out & our coach will learn something about us & we'll learn a heap about how he wants us to play.

It'll just be good to have a run!!!:thumbsu:

That is very nice of your friend to tip us as flag favorites. But Ruck Machine, you know as well as I do, it is D4, anything could and prob will happen!!!

I will say this though, We (SFX) are all looking forward to the season ahead and we will endeavour to win every game we play and like every team at this time of the year, are quietly confident. But our main focus is Rd 1. Like that old cliche, "We will take it one week at a time"

We have a Prac match against Syndal this weekend (At SFX College, Beaconsfield) and we are hoping for a good win to put us in a positive position, for RD 1 against Eley Park!!!!

In Fine Form - I agree that having a run will be good for you and i'm looking forward to seeing some goalposts for the first time soon.

I would have picked an easier team to play. If you get thumped then it won't do you much good.
