I didn't see the Collingwood game last week because i don't have fox :( however I did see the Essendon game which got me thinking, how good would Dale Thomas be at Essendon?

They play arguably the most exciting football in the comp, play on at all cost's, and run through the middle of the ground every time.

This game style is completely different to the way Collingwood play thus stiffling Dale's speed and creativity.

Would anyone consider a trade? And who would you want?
Jobe Watson springs to mind, i know Bombers fans rate him highly but i doubt they would give him up.

What do you think?

No Way in hell would I want Jobe Watson... We have enough midfielders who find the ball but cant kick... Possilby the worst kick in the comp. Maybe trade thomo for David Hille and Zaharakis hahaha sweet deal....

Do you think we're getting the best out of him?

Presently no, but with that said, he's injured and in a form slump, so I think he'll perform the way he is at any club. Improvement will take time.

I'd like to see him put on a few more kilos and improve his accuracy in front of goal, both of which are doable. Maybe a few gym sessions with Bucks.

At that point in time 'I heart Thommo'.

this is a good thread.

put your bias aside Pie fans and think about it for a second. We play a stifling, slow, wide kicking brand of football that often inhibits the creativity of players like Thomas. He would flourish at Essendon with their fast handballing and high risk taking style.

yes but trading him so he gets better doesnt help us at all does it

Well if thats the case, why would we want to help Essendon out

I think not.

His game is being stifled by Malthouse's silly game plan. Not enough allowances in the midfield also contributes to is lack of output. Playing on the half back flank/wing would be his ideal role/s. It would allow us to utilise Thomas's speed and creativity to a greater extent rather than wait in the forward line for the delivery (generally lackluster).

If you actually think about it properly.
O'Bree is going to be finished soon and Jobe plays a very similar role.
He has also worked on his kicking this year and I rate him highly as a player, someone who can feed to handball out to players like Pendles and Leon.

He needs to be a productive foward like Milne everyone agree please!!! He must kick more goals!
Please enlighten us - Who does Milne compete with and who does Thomas compete with (small forwards only)?

It's not about 'helping' Essendon, it's more about doing whats best for player and club.
I foresee alot of resentment coming Dale's way because he does not fit into our game plan.
Similar to Cox, it's not their fault, the talent is there, but do they suit US?

food for thought...

I expect to be referenced next time please.

If used properly Thomas will be better than Winderlich and Lovett.
If used properly Thomas could very well be our best player.

I don't think people realise just how much our gameplan stifles him imo. He'd be dominant at Essendon.

He'll surprise people one day.

The real question should be this, How good WILL Dale Thomas be when MM leaves and a new coach with an attacking confident gameplan comes in?
It will happen people and i can already see Dale and the team flourishing.

That raises an interesting point.
Will he have the support to go with him? The new gameplan would suit him to a tee, however would it suit our other players?

I think an attacking run and spread style plan would suit most players it will find out a few who arnt up to it either.
The Beauty of the whole thing will be that whilst Carlton and Essendon have adopted a more attacking style they have not adapted defensivley 100% where as our guys will already have that as thats how MM has taught them to play.
The major problem when we play poor is our movement of the footy and our run and positioning going forward not so much defensive deficiencies.

Guys MM does allow attacking football, albeit in controlled bursts (eg at the end of a quarter when the enemy gets a bit ragged) and burst players like Leon and Daisy are essential to this part of our game.

The idea of trading him is put theoretically and its worth considering all ideas. I would not trade him for Watson as there is a strong following at their respective clubs for these boys and it would be hurtful to the spirit of the game to trade them. I cannot see us getting value (taking the "cold hard facts" into account) as Daisy is presently injured and out of form.

Daisy is also a bit overexposed in the media. I don't believe that it is causing him to play badly but it might inhibit him regaining his confidence. He's a super confident kid with all the mental resources in the world, but fronting up for the idiocy and glare of a footy crowd is hard enough, being on the footy show and a million ads is just a bit extra to deal with that I would spare him if I could. Trading him would really put a burden on I reckon he would struggle with.

First I dont agree Thomas is in the form slump this thread implies.

Prior to his injury his intensity, tackling and defensive pressure have been fantastic. This part of his game has been as big a part of him since he started as the more speccie stuff

On the attacking side he has improvements to be made but I think they are in line with what you would expect in a young player

He fits in well, has been good this year. He is over exposed but is underrated by the outside football world as well as many posters here

Yeah, his form before the injury was quite good I thought. He played against St Kilda with the injury but he was playing well before that.

I think he is coming along quite well.

People ought to look at someone like Leon Davis who was talented but a bit enigmatic and has now really improved with more experience. Thomas has so much class he will only continue to get better. He could be very similar.
