With the tactics NZ have employed against him with great sucess, I am sure the South Africans will employ similar tactics to get him out on Sunday.

The problem I have is that with 4 fielders basically in one spot, there would be a lot of other gaps in the field and a quality batsman should be able to use these areas, yet Martyn has showed that he will try and hit through this field being set and has been out doing so. Surely a player of his quality should be able to use the gaps opened up by this field.

Any thoughts anyone?

The area has always been both his strength and his weakness. He is such a natural player through there that it would be very hard to control for him.Its not as if he wouldnt be trying to score through other regions as he is a very complete batsman IMO but they are bowling short and wide outside off as almost there stock ball.Same with Ponting just putting it a few foot outside off and letting him swing at it.This is what i am saying about if Gilly and M.Waugh can get us off to a good start and keep them out of there patterns then we will be able to beat them easily. We saw on tuesday Fleming doesnt like it being turned back the other way.

Thank god that someone gets what i'm on about Damien Martyn, he is a great test batsman, but he has shown little intelligence when it comes to Stephen Fleming's field placings, he's got blokes at covers, gully, point and extra cover to counter act Martyn's strong off side stoke play, but he doesn't counter act this and keeps geeting out caught in the covers or in gully.

But, it could be worse, Ricky Ponting seems to be going out a lot by slashing at off side deliveries without moving his feet.

Having seen the last 2 Adelaide/MCG) games live Martyn has played dumb cricket. He was dropped square of the wicket, then goes & gets dismissed the in the same manner twice! I recall Martyn being able to drive up the ground & play on the leg-side, but he persists in playing square on the off-side & in the air (with 4 fielders). He will need to learn to play other shot into the gaps, or he will loose his spot as all other teams cotton on to Fleming's inventive captaincy.
