Goal assists from the Melbourne game:

Jackson 3
Deledio 1
Edwards 1
Houli 0
Cotchin 0
Martin 0
Foley 0
Newman 0
Grigg 0

"Jackson is a dumb footballer, awful disposal, not effective, trade bait, need to upgrade him with better ball users..."

Where does that leave the rest of the above?

LMAO...honestly, a fair proportion of you blokes couldn't accurately report a chicken crossing the road. No wonder so many of you hate stats, it must be quite uncomfortable to realise that you perceive SO MANY THINGS WRONGLY.

Make two of Jackson's goal assists from yesterday goals and the goldfish memory brigade and the flip-floppers would all be touting him an essential part of our 2015 midfield, just like the beginning of the year. ;)

Without actually debating the OP at this point, I think that's a pretty random stat to quote Rayzor. It doesn't even include goals kicked. From memory, I don't think Jackson kicked one, so that would automatically put a few of those guys at the head of the list with him if goals kicked were included.

As for Jackson, it's just one of those weird situations where his blunders stand out far above the good things he does. I certainly think he's a pretty important part of our team. But he does need to clean up the mistakes he makes over and over again when he gets the ball in space (ie. decision making).

Fair point on the goals of some of the others DD, my main point is that not one of the people strongly questioning or outright bagging Jackson in this thread would have remembered that he directly assisted in three of our goals with well executed disposals (they would be unlikely to remember one), while I think it's fair to say that practically all of our other mids really were sub-par in this area given the weight of possession they had.

They seem to escape all criticism and walk away with their 'gun ball user' tag intact, despite the fact we just lost to a side we should have beaten, partly because NONE of them kicked the ball well enough into the forwardline from the opportunities they did have.

The numbers certainly don't indicate that any of our other mids were more effective than Jackson was, several were less so and that's the way I've seen the game in two viewings.

I remember Martin's first quarter goal well mate, I almost never bet on footy, but Saturday I had a few lazy dollars on him being first goal kicker at 23/1, his was the 5th shot on goal we had and I was pretty chuffed when it sailed through the middle. ;)

Absolutely no doubt about that, to the casual observer he rarely stands out, to people who know football he's a damn good player, hence my goal kicking remark, a lot of his biggest detractors got right off his back when he simply kicked a couple of goals earlier in the year, that was the only major difference in his games then and now.

Silly huh?

I certainly think he's a pretty important part of our team.

We'd be sitting bottom-4 without him, no question, and with our current personnel, if we lose him over the next couple of years without a replacement appearing out of nowhere or Conca becoming a really formidable hard man mid while in his teens and very early 20's, we'll be back to bottom-4 again.

So he gets three goal assist and his had a good game?

Seriously razor, jacksons job is to tag and he cant even do that probably as evident by his job on maloney. Also i cant even name one person his done a good job on this year but happily be proven wrong.

So he gets three goal assist and his had a good game?

Didn't claim he had a good game Tom, I'd struggle to find three or four who did. People have claimed he's not an automatic inclusion and that he was all shades of horrible on the weekend, I've compared his game with a bunch of other 'automatic inclusions' who are regarded that way because they are perceived to use the ball much better than Jackson.

I could have gone further and pointed out he had half as many turnovers as several 'gun ball users' and various other facts from the match which people apparently miss.

There's no actual facts behind these people's memories and perceptions of how well a player uses the ball, they're just collections of stylish effective disposals which live on in the memory, and a far bigger collection of stylish turnovers which get filed straight into the recycle bin.

Newman had 20 disposals and 12 turnovers on Saturday, he's an 'automatic inclusion' beyond criticism solely on the basis that he uses the ball well. He only hit one of our players with the ball on six occasions on the weekend and most of them were ultra-cheap. Barely a peep of criticism, probably got some votes.

Blokes like Jackson and Gourdis are pilloried for a couple of clumsy episodes or turnovers, yet they managed to have 35 disposals between them with only 8 turnovers, and between the two of them they certainly didn't give away as many goals as Newman did.

Criticism starts at the top in my book, we've lost several games this year partly because our captain and our supposed 'gun mids' simply didn't get enough ball and certainly didn't do enough with it.

Why can't people just admit that plain, simple truth instead of lurching around for scapegoats who invariably aren't even close to being the real problem?

To save repeating myself:

All of that aside, as his stats confirm, he's actually holding his own as an offensive mid with the others, despite not playing that role for most of his TOG.

Jackson has had the hardest role at the club this year. Has to direct the young players where to stand at centre bounces, directs players where to spread to, tries to win centre clearances and yet is usually tagging the oppositions best player.

I lost a bet on here a few years back about Jacko's ability, so not going dow that path again. ;)

However, what l will say is that his "real" importance to the side can only be judged by the coaching panel and if l remember correctly, they were actually livid beyond belief with his stupidity for being suspended for a match earlier this year.

I would go as far as saying that Jacko is probably in the top 5 picked each week... his hardness, leadership and protection of others is unmatched BY ANYONE in the side.

Watch who goes to Judd on Saturday... that shows you his ability and the respect that he has within the club. Silly thread really.

:thumbsu:

Dimma has said Jackson is always going to get a game in his sides, which says it all really.
