MELBOURNE forward Brad Miller and defender Daniel Bell will not be offered new contracts by the club, and will finish up with the Demons at season’s end.

The 27-year-old Miller is now considering his future direction.

“I’m really appreciative of the opportunities I’ve received at the Melbourne Football Club, and I understand the direction the club is taking,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“I’ll consider all options at this stage.”

But Bell, 25, is now looking to pursue his AFL career with another club.

“I’d like to thank the Melbourne Football Club for the seven years I’ve spent here. I leave here with no regrets and understand the decision, and the direction the club is taking,” he said.

“I will be nominating for the National Draft and hope to continue my football career at another AFL club.”

Coach Dean Bailey praised the contribution Miller and Bell had made at Melbourne.

“I’d like to thank Brad and Daniel for their time at the club. They have been great Clubman and provided great service,” he said.

“They will always be highly valued members of the Melbourne Football Club and we wish them well for the future.

Miller has played 133 matches for the Demons since he was selected at No. 55 in the 2001 AFL Draft.

He came to the club after captaining Queensland in the AFL under 18 championships in 2001.

In 2008, Miller topped Melbourne’s goalkicking with 26 majors. He has booted 89 goals, with his five-goal performance against Port Adelaide in Darwin this year a career-best.

One of his finest matches for the Demons was the 2006 semi-final against Fremantle, when he was the team’s standout with 19 disposals and 14 marks.

Bell was claimed in the 2002 AFL Draft, after Melbourne acquired selection No.14 from Collingwood via the trade period. In exchange, the Demons gave up Shane Woewodin to the Magpies.

Originally from Glenelg, Bell has played 66 matches for the Demons since debuting in 2004, but has not played a match this year. Injuries have hindered him along the way.

His finest game was arguably against Adelaide in round 10, 2007, when he collected three Brownlow votes

Bell played some good games includying that one against Adelaide which was worthy of the brownlow votes, I really thought it 2007 he was going to be a player for us. He seemed to have the work ethic and athleticism to make it as a medium defender but was just off the pace when it came to decision making and foot skills. With multiple injury set backs he seems to keep losing any form he built up.

Bell getting delisted gets the Fonz giving two thumbs up!!:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Miller and Bell = inevitable

Paul Johnson must be having sleepless nights as well as all our rookie listed players(except for McKenzie who will be promoted).

absolutely. Mckenzie has been a star!

and johnson its on thin ice. really depends on the progress of gawn and fitzpatrick

I think Paul Johnson will be safe. He has shown enough in several games this year to earn a spot on the list next year. Plus, the club will be well and truly aware that if Jamar gets injured and we have to rely on a young ruckman like Spencer or Gawn, we're f**ked. At least PJ gives us some insurance in the ruck.

McDonald, Miller, Bell...I reckon Newton and Meesen are next on the chopping block.

Some popular numbers will be up for grabs next year #23,#7, #21, #26,#29

I reckon Miller will get a gig at Gold Coast next year. I wish him all the best though, I actually liked him as a player.

Do you reckon we'll play him this Sunday as a farewell game?

Was thinking the same.

The irony for both Blease and Strauss is that they were both dissapointed they didn't get #17 this year and the FD told them they had to earn it. Neither have made an impact this year (for various reasons) yet they'll both be faced with a smorgasbord of lower numbers even if we draft 2 new kids.

They might retire #23 for a year though.

Sylvia should take #23 next season so #12 will be waiting for Jack Viney when he arrives...

About bloody time tbh, was on our list for far too long.

Good luck to him but he was a spud.

TBH I cant really think of any players that deserve a lower number or they already have one... Bennell and Jetta possibly... #43 and #39 are pretty average numbers... Rohan Bail maybe? I quite like #44 though... Strauss, Blease, Fitzpatrick and Gawn probably don't deserve lower numbers yet...Other than that, everyone has decent numbers.

Thanks for your years of service, Belly. I've heavily disliked Ben Johnson ever since that incident. It looked like he was really going to become a good player there for a while.

I hope he gets picked up by another club that isn't Carlton.

I don't get the whole "good numbers" thing. If I had the chance to choose, I'd be going straight to number 41.

He is a true legend of the club.

It's just the culture that's developed over time... Higher numbers are associated with being "amateur" or "newbie".... and lower numbers are generally associated with champions... If I could pick any number I'd go straight for number #9...was my number all through junior footy.

The Big Russian sends his regards. ;)

Haven't you heard, 40 is the new 30 apparently.:)

PS why you got Bail as #41?

41 is by far and away my favourite number. Rohan Bail is my favourite player.

.. and I really can't be bothered changing it to 44!

That is how I'll remember Belly... have hated Johnson since then. Average plodder anyway, surely he's almost finished as a player?

Has his form been that bad in the VFL or have your young developing backline kept him out of the team...? Was a good player before his consistent injuries??

Tries his hardest but his awareness is shithouse, gets run down way too often and its not like he is slow either. Turns the ball over too much for a player in the backline also.
