Found it interesting with "On The Couch" last night, they had Old man Sheehan as a guest and he was pretty strong on West Coast effin' up by not taking Curtin and taking Reid. His thoughts were "local boy, never going to leave" which to be honest makes sense if Reid leaves this year or next as they will just get a bunch of picks again to re start.

Old man Matthews thought that Curtin shouldn't be in that conversation because he went at 8 but if the draft was redone right now, where would Curtin be going?

Oh, can they also get rid of Jack Riewoldt as host, he looks like Howdy Doody and his performance is just as wooden.

Harley would still go #1, but Curtin would be an excellent chance of going in the top 3. Depends how one rates him vs. Watson and Caddy/Morris.

Murphy Reid was drafted more as a midfielder than a small forward so ity probably been a pleasant surprise for the Dockers he's producing so early
Always showed he had extreme footy smarts and skills but.

I think we are all watching in real time Curtin overtaking all of these guys at a rapid rate of knots. Reid is a different beast and I still think him in say our side or a Geelong, Collingwood or Brisbane where he has support around him and he would elevate to such a high level that he still would be the number 1 from that draft.

Reid clear number one.

Then throw a blanket over McKercher, Walter, Watson, Curtin and Caddy.

He’s clearly gone ahead of Duursma, Sanders and Windsor which is good.

In another big tick for our recruiting the trade to get up to pick 8 looks like a really smart one.

Riewoldt and Mathews are so Victorian biased it makes ya sick

There’s merit to the argument though. Hypothetically, Reid was so well sought after, they could have traded down and gotten Curtin and another first round pick.

As it stands, Reid is a generational talent, but the risk he goes home is real. Add in the idiotic move of trading their first pick last year and their eggs really are all in the Reid basket. Maybe they would be better off with Curtin and one of McKercher, Caddy, Walter, Watson etc

Really? It's way too early to make that statement. After a brilliant start last year, he looks to have regressed, gone onto the KFC diet, and gone the lip. I'd much rather have Curtin than him, now.

I just look at his game style and how he has developed and think, that is a game style that could really stand up in finals. He has speed off the mark to get clear, has a vice like marking ability, moves through traffic as good as anyone and has brute strength. He also reads the game really well and hits targets and knows where the goals are. I can't wait to see him in the finals this year.

$201 for the Norm Smith.

Interesting, would Norf had traded their first two for West Coasts?

2 & 4 for 1 & 13 (granted that is where they ended up, not before draft)

He'll do fine when he's back home where he wants to be.

He’s an angry man but if he matures and learns to control that it may not be a bad thing.

People are judging him really harshly and forgetting how poor his team is. If he was able to play alongside even Norths midfield he’d be having a very different year.

Unlike most young players, Reid doesn't have the luxury of a peripheral role. He's the main mid for a historically crap team. Ill discipline aside, I think he's doing just fine.

Interesting considering some of the lip he was giving JHF was about him leaving North after a year and 'going home to mummy'
Staying for 3 years is different though

Full marks to the recruiters... but it wasn't rocket science either. Trading up to get him was like a "**** YEAH" moment, even if our coaches didn't seem to know exactly what to do with him when he arrived.

Curtin's tape before the draft looked seriously elite. I was equally as excited when we drafted both Fog and Thilthorpe. It's all paying off in quick time right now. :thumbsu:
West Coast rated him the second best talent in the draft and were mulling over Wether to trade out pick 1 for two later ones to use on him, but the public backlash of trading out pick 1 and not taking the best talent since Judd in Harley, was just too big a cross to bare.
The fact that Adelaide knocked back their first pick for 2024 for Curtin, which we all expected to be one or two, was a massive call.

While WC missed on him, the biggest lol is North who had two picks before 8 whoch they could have used on him, but didn't, and he is the type of player they are screaming for.

My recollection is that West Coast wanted our future pick as well, which would have been pick 4, so Jagga (WCE pick 3) for Curtin for Draper, or we would have taken Draper at 3 anyway, so effectively giving Curtin away for nothing. It wasn't a strong offer, so wasn't considered, IIRC.
So I'm not convinced on the narrative that West Coast really wanted him, they should have traded down with Melbourne and picked Curtin up with a bunch of other players, are offered a straight swop with us.
I dont think so because that stipulation wasn't on GWS when WC offered them the pick before us. They rated Curtin second best in that draft and would have happily given up their first next year for him.

Not really sure, looking back on the past winners there has generally been a pretty clear standout a lot of the time.
I Feel like they generally reward consistency in the award rather than the players who had big games but not over the course of the entire season.

That’s how we got generational players like Lewis Taylor who won it over Bontempelli .

Or hedge your bets, take $300, put it on Ashcroft (3/1), if he wins you get $900 and if Curtin wins you get $2835 (less $300 is $2535). If Ashcroft wins you get more than the offered payout, but you get to keep your big win opportunity on the table.
And if Murphy beats them both?
