Retired Daniel Merrett (2002-2016)

I was surprised when I saw Merrett pop up as one of the dots outside the defensive 50 getting a handball or kick in AFL gameday live :). I got to watch our game against Essendon and could see a genuine intent from strawbs to take the opposition on.

Great to see the big man believing himself, another feather in our rookie coach's cap.

Merrett a 50-50 chance

Already reeling from the loss of key defender Joel Patfull to a broken jaw, Brisbane's defensive stocks are set to be put under further duress with full-back Daniel Merrett in doubt for the Lions' clash against St Kilda.
Patfull will be on the sidelines for up to a month, but Lions coach Michael Voss was optimistic on Monday that scans on Merrett's rolled ankle would bring positive news.
"He's a 50-50 call I think," Voss said.
"We are waiting to get scans back on what his ankle is like, ankles can blow up quite quickly but then settle down very quickly … but we've just got to wait for the scans."

It's an opportunity for someone else, somebody has to step up," Voss declared.

Early yesterday he had rated Merrett a 50-50 chance against St Kilda and expressed hope Patfull could be back in two weeks.

But a later medical report confirmed both defenders were more seriously injured than first believed.

"Joel has had his operation, it was more badly broken than we thought so he's out," Voss said.

"And Rog (Merrett) has damaged some ligaments in the ankle and it is going to be the same period for him."

MERRETT OUT FOR 4 WEEKS

Well, frankly, we're in deep shit now.

**** this is a cruel sport. Just when things were starting to look up, we cop injuries to two of our more irreplaceable players.

Footy sucks. :thumbsd:

Look at some of the forwards we are coming up against in that timeframe... Riewoldt, Kozi, Fevola, Franklin & Roughead. Timing couldn't be more perfect.

Need some fringe players to stand up ****ing bigtime.

Losses to ordinary teams like Collingwood are going to come back to bite us now.

Will Merret be back not this week but the next. We could really do with him or Patful back in the side. Oh and will he come back through the reserves or straight back in the seniors. I would personally have him staright back in the seniors. No use playing him in the reserves only to have him dominate big time and come back in the seniors the next week! Take a bloody risk and bring him in when he is cleared to play!

pretty sure Merrett isn't due back until the Melbourne game at best, and Patfull a week later. Being that Merrett had a leg injury, i would be inclined to give him a run in the 2nds, seems he wouldn't have been doing much in the past few weeks on crutches. Patfull is probably a better chance to come straight back in, but again i think they might give him a run as well.

Daniel Merrett's shock early recall

As in match thread V. Hawthorn:

GUN defender Daniel Merrett is set for a shock call-up for the Lions' clash with Hawthorn and will be pitched into the toughest defensive assignment in footy.

Merrett had been listed to return after next week's bye, but completed a secret training session yesterday and is primed for a rush return to join the duel with superstar duo Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead at Launceston on Sunday.

The powerhouse pair has been in devastating form for the reigning premiers this season, combining for 71 goals.

Against Sydney at the MCG on Sunday, they booted three apiece to seal the narrow win.

Merrett is likely to get the job on Franklin and his quicker than expected recovery from an ankle injury sustained against Adelaide in round 8 is a welcome relief for rookie coach Michael Voss, whose first year in charge has been derai led by a severe injury toll.

However, he said Merrett would still need to train at 100 per cent on Thursday to be selected.

"We won't take any risk at this stage of the season, especially when we know we have a bye the following week," he said. "However, having said that, this week is a critical game and we desperately need the four points heading into the break."

Wow. I am excited and terrified.

I doubt the club would risk him if there were serious doubts over his fitness. I guess how he comes up from that training session will show where he is at.

I think the best summary of this is that if he comes back it probably takes the game from a 70/30 Hawthorn's way to a 50/50 toss-up, simply by having one person back.

suddenly we could have Merrett, Roe and Hendo as our defenders, which is fantastic. Im sure they wont risk him unless he is 100% right to go, with the break the week after, it just isn't worth risking him.

Voss said on Monday he wasn't anticipating vice-captain Merrett to be available and played down the merits of risking him by rushing him back to mark Franklin when the Lions have their mid-season bye the following weekend. Merrett's moment of truth comes on Thursday when he must train strongly to be included in the 25-man squad.
"We won't take a risk this time of the season," Voss said.

After the team reviewed the game on Monday, Merrett reckoned a brain snap did prove the turning point of the match - but it had nothing to do with Brennan. Merrett beat up on himself for an errant handball to Robbie Gray that led to an easy goal in the final term, then the floodgates opened for Port.
"It is always tough to look back and a few efforts personally I did weren't acceptable," he said.
"It was a pretty bad mistake at the time. It probably got the ball rolling for them.
"I will be working hard on my handballs this week."

Takes a team effort to win and most of the time, its a team effort to lose. Wasn't one of Merretts best games by far, but he was far from alone. Coming back after a lay off, im sure he will be back into the groove in a week or two.

I reckon he played his best ever game last night. Despite B.Ratten's claim that Fevola was "probably best on ground", Merrett had him beaten all night in the one-on-one contests, including on the leads. Fevola marked the ball inside 50m less than 5 times, and one of his goals came from a free kick from him chasing down Patfull (Merrett couldn't have stopped that from occurring).

Merrett is right up there with our three most important players in terms of team structure.

Without him in the team we are are without anchor or rudder, with him in, we seem a much more purposeful team. More organized and far more poised.

Besides what he brings to the team in structure, I just love the way he plays. He is a real competitor, and obviously works really hard on his skills and in his understanding of and in improving his ability to read the game. He's a beauty.

Was outstanding. Owned Fev all night, and even ran off him in the 4th qtr linking up in the middle in the dieing minutes to help get the ball forward. Was a star and didn't seem troubled at all.

Have to agree. Merrett's last quarter was amazing! Ratten must have had his eyes closed because if Fev was as good as he says he was, he would've chased down big Rog in the centre when he was the loose link up man!

From memory that passage ended up in a goal as well. Didn't take a huge run down the middle or anything, just pushed ahead, received the ball and handballed off to another runner. Just shows you dont need to be a 'rebounding defender' to help out. Just pushing up to be an extra number can really help get the ball moving forward.

As I was reading this I couldn't help but think of Voss' reaction to Roe holding up the play in the back line in the final quarter. For those who haven't seen it he, well, nearly exploded with anger - one of the rare times Voss has shown emotion in the box.

My point is that Merrett, as pointed out, was able to get the ball to a teammate quickly so he can get the play moving. He may not have the greatest skills but he knows enough to get the ball to a player who has the skill to get to a dangerous position.
