EXCITING Kangaroos forward Daniel Motlop has quit the club, declaring he wants to be traded interstate to be closer to his family in the Northern Territory.

The out-of-contract 23-year-old has tired of life in Melbourne after a year spent battling shoulder and hamstring injuries and believes he needs a fresh start interstate.

The gifted forward had a meeting with Kangaroos coach Dean Laidley and football manager Tim Harrington yesterday morning to inform them of his decision. It is believed the pair were surprised and disappointed by the news, believing Motlop had been close to signing a lucrative deal to stay at the club.

Motlop's manager Alex McDonald of Flying Start last night admitted his client had quit the Kangaroos and said the young player did not have a club in mind in declaring he wanted to be traded.

"It's family reasons, it is not about the Kangaroos because Daniel has been very happy at the Kangaroos and they have been very good for him, but he misses his family in Darwin and would like the opportunity to be closer to home," McDonald said.

That leaves a move interstate likely with the Adelaide clubs, Sydney and the Brisbane Lions the likely destinations — though the Adelaide clubs would seem the most logical move. Motlop is known to be good friends with Peter Burgoyne and it is believed the Power and Adelaide have expressed interest in Motlop in the past.

The Kangaroos had been expecting Motlop to sign a new contract and had been extremely patient and accommodating of the young player through an injury plagued season. The club allowed him to fly home to Darwin for several weeks during this rehab period from shoulder surgery.

Upon returning earlier than expected from the pre-season shoulder injury, Motlop managed three games in rounds 12-14 before straining a hamstring. Days before he was due to make his comeback to the seniors, he again strained the same hamstring, ruling him out for the rest of the year.

Motlop was the great hope for the Roos for next season. The flashy forward with the booming kick and ability to do the unpredictable had emerged as a danger player.

Motlop was taken by the Roos in the first round (pick No. 8 overall) in the 2000 national draft and joined his brother Shannon at Arden Street. Shannon, who played in the Roos' 1999 premiership side in his first year with the club, was cut by the Roos and only this year selected by Melbourne as a replacement for Troy Broadbridge.

Laidley this year was under no misapprehension of the value of the player who last year kicked 34 goals and emerged as one of the few Kangaroos with the rare ability to change a game.

"I think we have missed him enormously over the first part of the year because of that X-factor, and you just don't know what he is going to do sometimes," Laidley said, before Motlop's surprise early return in round 12

at the very least we should get him separately. More young talent to add to our list.

Settle down, he-who-would-trade-our-spine. Motlop is clearly a talented boy. His being injured this year pretty much rooted North (if I may use such a terrible word on Bigfooty).

I like Motlop, reckon he's a good young player. Has abit of mongrel in him too. Condiering our record with high draft picks, we might as well give them pick 17 for him. We would have just p*ssed it up the wall anyway.

No way would I do a straight swap him for Watts thoug.

Agreed, Motlop is a good player and is still relatively young. He's quite creative around goals and would be a handy acquisition for the Crows up forward. If we gave up pick 17 for Motlop, hopefully we get a high draft pick or a young midfielder for Watts to bolster our midfield.

D White to Crows

Simple trade and looks like a win for all 3 involved (but would the Powder Puff Girls do a trade that might comeback and bite them)

Why would we want White, we've already had Daniell Schell on our list. BTW Motlop was orginally drafted with pick 8 so you would expect the Kangas would want at least that. That rules us out.

If we can get him really cheap we should but other wise we should pass. He's injury prone and inconsistent. Too bigger risk to spend a first or second round pick on.

12 months ago every man and his dog were screaming for the Adelaide Crows to trade for Damon White (his ability has been stagnated because of the incompetence of Mark Williams development of younger players)

North traded Bryon Pickett for a 4th round pick and if Motlop wanted to go they would happily trade for a young talented KKP

And a handsome salary deal.
Port want a whole lot more for him this time around, Freo will get him IMO.

Firstly, Port traded pick 15 and 35 to Kangaroos for Pickett. Roos then traded pick 15 to Fremantle for Leigh Brown.

Secondly, I would be interested in Motlop but not for Watts. Motlop is a HFF. Talented kid who can turn a match off his own boot but surely his troubles with shoulders and hamstrings would have to be of some concern to us.

I would love to get him but not for Watts or our 1st round pick. We should do everything in our power to keep these in our possesions.

Seems lopsided, other clubs involved ?
I dont rate Pickett that much at all, 1 starring game 6 lame ones, medhurst is at least more consistant without the depth of off feild issues.


I would be mighty annoyed if the crows even thought about chasing Pickett.

Pickett is finished IMO. Has been umpired out of the game, and rightly so.

Neil Craig's philosophy is to recruit quality people who can play football.

Pickett only half satisfies the criteria, the later half. We would not even contemplate such a stupid move. I'm not sure anyone would be interested in Pickett.

Always exceptions to the rule.

Scott Thompson’s character was very questionable before the trade period last year if I recall correctly, his comments about not playing for the crows as a teenager came back to hunt him.

I think its a bit of a long bow to draw on Scott Thompson here. He was a 19 year old teenagers who said he hated Adelaide.

I think thats a lot different to what fevola has done off the field during his time in the AFL. At least Thompson is a solid citizen off the field. I am not sure we could say the same thing for Fevola.
