Who remembers these blokes, left for greener pastures, one got tagged out of it a fair bit but got goals from tough spots on the park, the other was inconsistent at best and frustrating to watch defend.

My question is.. under Hinkley, and with our new level of fitness, do they still get a game at Port if they were here ?

Yes, they probably would. But as they are no longer Port players, maybe this should be in the past players thread.

Almost certainly both would.

I do agree with Hombsch > Chaplin though.

Chaplin I'm glad he left. The last couple of years he was a liability. Basically we got Tom Clurey for him leaving with compo pick 29. I think we will be seeing the benefit of Chaplin leaving very soon.

But Pearce under Ken's no BS, you gotta work hard and run all day, both ways regime, he could have been a real weapon with his blistering speed. He still ****s up his kicks but I look at how much our kicking has improved since 2012 so who knows how much he might have improved his if he stayed. Ebert and Cornes are two examples of massive improvement in kicking skills.

I certainly don't miss either of them, and never thought I would as soon as they left. Hinkley's made a better player out of the likes of Westhoff and Carlile, I have a feeling he would have done the same for Pearce.

Chaplin, on the other hand, well, I can't wait for when we play Richmond in Round 17, and when he's doing the kick-in in front of the Port cheer squad, to kick it to one of our forwards on the chest so I can yell "THAT'S THE FIRST TIME YA EVER HIT A PORT JUMPER ON THE CHEST CHAPLIN YA (*insert derogatory name here*)

Yes, No, who cares.

Those players made their decisions and in the end it was the best outcome for everyone…. (maybe not Chaplin).

From where we were to where we are and where we are currently going I would rather spend my time on this site thinking, commenting and acknowledging the players who did stick round to help get this club back on its feet rather than worry about those who deserted us in our time of need.

Don't begrudge Pearce. Came off the rookie list and did his best, giving far greater service than his draft ranking should've warranted for 8 seasons. Needed and deserved a change of scenery towards the end and has been excellent for Freo so far this year in particular.

But Chaplin. Boy oh boy.

Had and continues to have an opinion of himself far in excess of his talent, was quick to point the finger at others when times were tough and talked a good game with negligible substance to back it up - and then after all that, on his way out took an unnecessary swipe at the fans in the press who'd stood by him through a horrendous time for him personally.

You get what you deserve.

To be fair they left when it looked like we were going to be stuck in the doldrums (what is a doldrum anyway?) for another year or two; Freo were a team on the rise and played in a GF, so well done to Pearce. The Tiges made the finals for once and got knocked out by 9th, so sucked in Chaplin. He gave us a whack on his way out which was poor form so good luck making the 8 this year, you'll need it.

If they were still here I reckon they both play and who knows, Chappy might have developed some desire for the ball and put the double fist punches away. As far as the FA process goes we've done quite well...Pearce + Chaplin out, Monfries + White in, with 2013-14 recruits Hombsch, Stevenson, Heath + Clurey more than adequately covering the loss of Chaplin and Polec, White, Wines, Impey and Monfries covering for Pearce. No regrets.

Personally I think Matthew Broadbent plays Chaplins 'loose' role better than he ever did.
We also got Homsch who seems to be better in the air, either marking or spoiling that Troy ever did.

If he'd stayed would our side look different, would we have recruited Hombsch ... who knows - I suspect Ken wouldn't have accepted him in the role he was playing, he would have needed to change or ship out.

Right now we are a significantly better side than when he was around, and he's now playing the same loose defender, shit kick role he played here. Tom me he plays like a china doll.... for some reason wants to avoid body contact at all times. rumour has it, he wears a mask when riding the subway to avoid germs as well.

Head: Pearce would still make our team over guys like Impey, Pittard or Young, and he's probably be a better player than he was for us two years ago. Under Primus he was expected to be the cake, whereas now he'd be able to fulfill his more natural role of the cream. Our run and carry game would suit him better than Freo's game too. We saw how much Matt White improved under our gameplan after 8 average years at Richmond, and Pearce is a similar player. Chaplin would no longer make our team though. Carlile, Trengove, Hombsch and Jonas are all better key defenders.

Heart: I wish Pearce all the best, except when they play us. I hope he doesn't get booed next week, although I expect that he will to some extent. Chaplin can eat a bag of dicks though. When we play Richmond at Adelaide Oval I'll be booing every touch he gets like a West Coast supporter after Scott Selwood didn't get a free kick for ducking his head.

Chaplin? Wouldn't take him back if we were offered him and a third round pick for nothing in return. It'd be clogging a place on the list. He's everything that was wrong with how Port was.

Pearce would excel under Hinkley. When Pearce was around it was shut him down, shut Port down. Since he left we've had:
Boak, Hartlett and Ebert improved.
Wingard greatly improved.
Added Wines.
Added Polec.

If Pearce was in our side and I was the opposition coach he'd be behind Boak, Hartlett, Ebert and Wines I'd tag. And behind Wingard if he was further up the field. And if he was playing as a forward/mid I'd rate him behind Wingard and Monfries as to who to put the lock down on.

Pearce on one side of the ground, Polec on the other, along with White and an already fast team would step it up a notch further. And with our current cattle if he didn't improve under Ken and Burgess we know he could be dropped without it totally wrecking our run. I'd take Pearce back (if at little cost), as long as he agreed he had to measure up defensively or he wouldn't get games.

Pearce wouldn't cop anywhere as many hard tags as he used to in our current team, and his pace would suit our game style. I was nowhere near as critical of him as I was of Chaplin. Chaplin can GAGF.

I don't begrudge Pearce, he needed the change of scenery and from what I gather has never really bagged the club. I still see him making the same mistakes at Freo that he made with us though, can be soft at times and has a suspect kick. Also doesn't stand up when the pressure is on. In short I'm glad he's not with us anymore.

Chaplin, well as Kern says, you get what you deserve.

Nope.Still hate them both with a passion though Pearce doesn't phase me as much as Chaplin does. They remind me of that Italian cruise ship skipper jumping ship cos it got hard, so far as I'm concerned I hope mediocrity follows them both.
