Here's some profile from two phantom drafts:

# 43 Western Bulldogs – David Ellard (Swan Districts / 175cm / 72kg)

Small forward type who may not have impressed as much as Jackky or Gartlett this year at Colt or Nationals but I think he could well turn out to be the best. Would be interested in what the WA boys think but I am a big fan. He has a pretty good motor which allows him to be constantly provide options for his teammates as they come forward. Also quite aggressive at the ball and skill level is excellent. Very adept at dropping balls into holes (ala Luke Power and Rob Harvey) which I think is one of the really difficult kicking skills. Poise is a feature and expect this kid to somewhere in the mix for the Scrays around here.

Pick 74 > St Kilda – David Ellard – 175cm 72kgs – Swan Districts (Sml Fwd)

Real speculative pick here with St Kilda picking up a smokey in forward pocket specialist Ellard. Presents strongly, has a good motor and is a great kick of the ball, Ellard is a real untapped talent.

Does a nominated Rookie mean he is able for selection anytime or does he have to wait for an injury

Where did you hear that he's a nominated rookie? I realise we can nominate Jamison and one other if we feel like it but I hadn't heard we'd nominated anyone else. And if we did I'd be surprised if it was Ellard going by training reports which seem to be drooling over Shields the irish kid.

Teague said Ellard is a natural footballer with great skills, has a great football brain and played well in the practice game in this interview. We desperately need another goal sneak more than we need another medium defender, so I hope Ellard gets a game before the likes of Joseph, Shields and Hill. Both Hill and Joseph are the type of player we have plenty of at the moment and are said to be poor kicks.

ELLARD. ;)

Can't say that I agree. Why do we need another goal sneak? Ellard would come close to our best 22 at the minute, Eddie Betts is doing a fine job and will only improve. And of course we need another medium defender, which Carlton team have you been watching? We seemed to get smashed every week last year by the oppositions small forward because we didn't have a medium defender who could take those players. If Shield can fill that role he'd be a more than welcome addition to the senior list.

How about the fact that Shield has never played a game of football before?

Who knocked Eddie Betts?

Calm down.

We definitely need another ground level goalkicker with good skills like Ellard has according to Teague, but Houlihan and Russell might play that role under Ratten and get more time up forward in 2008.

Some reports said Ellard can even play on ball, but I don't know if he can do this at the highest level.

And we have Anderson, Armfield, Browne and Pfeiffer on our senior list who have heaps more football experience than Shields.

It's always best to look before you shoot after you were 100% wrong about Russell's game in round 19.

Pretty sure I was calm. I think your reading something into my post that wasn't there.

Do we?

So who do we drop to shove another forward pocket specialist into the side, Brad Fisher? Setanta O'hAilpin? Matthew Kruezer?

Some reports said Ellard can even play on ball, but I don't know if he can do this at the highest level.
If a young forward pocket doesn't have the potential to play midfield down the road he won't be on an AFL list. Can play midfield isn't the same as can play midfield at AFL level straight out of the colts.

And we have Anderson, Armfield, Browne and Pfeiffer on our senior list who have heaps more football experience than Shields.
Experience? Where?

Anderson - 2 AFL games
Armfield - 0 AFL games
Browne- 0 AFL games
Pfeiffer- 0 AFL games

All unproven, most of them are teenagers and they've done nothing that puts them ahead of Shields as a potential medium defender at this stage. Plus Shields has the potential to play midfielder ;)

I was 100% right about Russell game. He had a very average game and I know that because I was actually at the game watching from the stands. There's a world of difference between watching a game on TV and seeing it live in front of you. On TV you don't see the options down the field that are ignored for worse options, or they were lost because Russell couldn't take an easy chest mark and fumbled around with the ball allowing Collingwood players to flood back. On TV you don't see the flow of the team slow down whenever a player like Bentick gets the ball and wanders around at a snails pace. All you see is Bentick with the ball passing to a teammate who eventually coughs it up and gets the blame. On TV you don't see how high the ball actually gets popped up when Houlihan is passing into the forward 50, allowing the opposition defender an easy spoiling opportunity when a better player would've kicked it out in front of our forwards so that the opposition is never allowed that opportunity to spoil the ball in the first place. On TV all you see is Houlihan passing the ball straight into Fev's hands and Fev stuffing it up. I didn't bother responding about Russell earlier because, quite frankly, why should I bother when you consider kicking it to the third or fourth worst option a good kick because you never saw the other options due to the limited vision of the idiot box. What would be the point?

Gandaal this is a pretty weak point, you know full well that these players have played an enormous amount of afl compared to Shields, who would have been lucky to have kicked a footy before 07. Afl games played isn't the greatest indicator here....

A weak response to a weak statement. Claiming that we have the spot covered just because we recruited a bunch of kids who may or may not even make is ridiculous. It's like claiming that Brad Dick should've been given the opportunity that Martin Clark received last year at Collingwood just because Dick's been playing the game longer. That's about as weak and nonsensical as you can get.

Football experience dummy.

You were 100% wrong.

You said Russell didn't use the ball well and the Pies let him have the ball.

Yet the match committee gave Russell 21 votes in the B & F.

We didn't have any other options beside Fev and Fisher with Waite down back.

Man you talk some shit!

Russell didn't have any other options to kick to other than Fisher and Fev who were our only talls inside 50.

On TV you don't see how quick Russell is!

I thought it was Simpson when Russell stole that ball from Scott Lucas at CHF in round three and ran down the ground.

Russell is deceptively quick.

Re: David Ellard (rookie)

Football experience dummy.

I guess Collingwood should just tell Martin Clarke to go home then. Brad Dick will play midfield in 2008 because he's been playing longer. Great logic "dummy"

Man you talk some shit!

21 votes is almost nothing due to our B&F voting format and I'm not sure how votes he collected over the entire year have anything to do with his game against Collingwood. Can I quote you here in response to this irrelevant statment?

Man you talk some shit!

Another irrelevant statement. What was that actually in response too?

Russell didn't have any other options to kick to other than Fisher and Fev who were our only talls inside 50.

Even when that was the case Russell messed around with the ball so much that instead of getting the ball to Fev and Fish when they were in the clear he allowed the opposition to flood back and provide a contest.

Man you talk some shit!

On TV you don't see how quick Russell is!

Russell is quick in straight lines which is fine on an athletics track, but in footy? You rarely see Russell use his pace to any great effect in a game, and Scott Lucas isn't exactly Asafa Powell.

Nothing you posted actually responded to what I posted in any way. You should be embarrassed by that effort.

Man you talk some shit!

Re: David Ellard (rookie)

IMO Russell was in our top 3 players in that game against Collingwood and I was at the ground.

I don't say this lightly either as I have often been a critic of the guy, he played well that day.

He got plenty of the ball. I'm not sure that's the same thing as 'playing well' but I tire of this arguement because I'm not a Russell hater, just someone who wasn't all that impressed.

Re: David Ellard (rookie)

Why is the thread which is devoted to David Ellard all about Jordan Russell?

And that's why you're sitting on your arse in a room in front of a computer and not in a coaches or commentary box.

Re: David Ellard (rookie)

Ellard is elusive after he got out of trouble and a contest where I thought he was going to be caught and smashed.

Can he maintain his speed if he puts on more muscle?

Small would be an understatement.

If that's the play on the HFF where he sold the candy to two opponents, I was very impressed with hsi composure and nous. It isn't rocket science but it does take a cool footy brain under pressure and some confidence......most importantly he seems to have the right mindset for a rookie......work your arse off, take opportunities when they arise and play with confidence....it isn't an easy route into AFL footy. I like his comment in the Mike and Dan article that his aim at the end of the year (his first on the rookie list) to be elevated to the senior list :thumbsu:

Re: David Ellard (rookie)

I really like this guy, I think he could end up being a very useful player for the Carlton FC. :D;):thumbsu:
