David Haynes!

This is a situation where I'd like to see the AFL allow teams to trade future picks, and introduce trading on draft day, to make it more exciting, like how most of the American Sports do it.

On Haynes, I think there'll be interest in him from a couple of teams. Someone like Collingwood, Hawthorn and possibly Richmond off the top of my head, could still use him as a leading forward. Probably won't get anything more than a 3rd or a 4th though.

Perhaps.

We may well just be satisfied with Hawkins, Neal and our first rounder.

Mr Wells claims Tom is the only certainty at this stage. The club isn't fully convinced of Jacob, and thus hasn't commited to him as much as one would have thought (especially considering the impressive path he's carved for himself thus far).

Still, early days.

I'd imagine he's determining whether Neal is worth a second round pick. Personally I'd like him to get a go if he's got a reasonable amount of talent. Second rounders are generally a bit hit and miss anyway, and the likelyhood is that we'll be in the later picks of the second round (high 20s), so it's even more of a gamble. Give him a go, it'll be good for the club to have another F/S.

From what I've heard maybe its better to think of Hawkins as the R2 Pick and Neal as the P3.
In the end they will have to use their judgement on worth, as much as it sounds nice all F/S must be worth their place on a tight list. I dont believe you can F/S to a rookie so Neal would have to be more advanced than Byrnes was or Batchlor etc to really be be picked on merit

I think that's the problem thus far. Neal has pace going for him, but is small.

Club is playing the wait-and-see game with him in terms of his development next season. No surprises really.

Small G?.Not having seen him , is Byrnes a fair comparison? Is he small in height or is he a feather weight. Id like to think he could develop into a version of his old mans square shoulder stocky body, but as Nathan and Gary Jr have proven, one doesnt always get duplicates in F/S's.
Tell me does he kick like his old man, Scratcher one of the best kick's on the run?

Stands at 177cm, and tips the scales at a mere 69kg. Obviously, some growing left in him is possible, but it's certainly not overwhelming.

Haven't personally seen him play (only played the 3 TAC games this year), so am in no position to comment on his kicking. Simply passing word along the grapevine.

I understand that, my point was that the club can give up a third rounder for Hawkins, but in order to pick up another kid they need to give up a second rounder. Therefore the club would be thinking "Is this kid worth a second round pick?", if he's not, then they'll take Hawkins in the third round and use the second rounder on someone else. With our team having a relatively young midfield, I would think that being skinny isn't going to go against the boy as he can grow in the VFL, the question will be skills and heart. A tick in each of these boxes will result in a tick in the 'Let's draft him' box as well.

And another point, there are some pretty handy players who are shorter than 177cm. The following are the 25 shortest players in the league:

# Player Team Ht Wt Age BMI Games

1 Harvey, Brent Kang 168 72 27.28 25.51 171
2 Matera, Phillip WC 171 76 29.74 25.99 159
3 Rodan, David Rich 171 83 21.88 28.38 60
4 Height, Kristan* Haw 172 75 22.17 25.35 0
5 Crouch, Jared Syd 173 77 27.47 25.73 154
6 Bateman, Chance Haw 174 74 24.18 24.44 42

17 Schammer, Byron Frem 175 71 20.18 23.18 37
18 Schneider, Adam Syd 175 76 21.28 24.82 34
19 Smith, Dylan Frem 175 77 23.10 25.14 15
20 Alvey, Mark Ess 176 77 25.20 24.86 53
21 Clarke, Tim Haw 176 65 23.39 20.98 47
22 Jones, Austinn StK 176 80 28.90 25.83 204
23 Skipworth, Hayden Adel 176 76 23.49 24.54 17
24 Spriggs, David Syd 176 77 24.58 24.86 64
25 Williams, Paul Syd 176 82 32.39 26.47 273

Ones in bold are probably the pick of the bunch, although there are some good kids in there as well.

Wasn't contesting the quality of the kid, he may very well turn out to be a handy player. Point is however, so could the several other kids we'd pass on to get him.

If it's all true and the club is playing the wait-and-see game with him, they're going about it the right way. Shouldn't be any guarantees apart from Hawkins at this stage; far too early.
