Universal Love David Mackay Appreciation Thread

Ok David Mackay has copped so much shit on this board for performances last year, whilst not great, were certainly not as dire as the protaginists rant & rave about.

Whist i rarely listen to "glass half empty" brigade .... i do believe Mackay deserves credit for a fine season :thumbsu:

The guy has obviously got himself fitter ....is getting to more contests ...and is really breaking lines and being a 100 mtr player :thumbsu:

Whilst Charlie has received rave reviews ...Mackay largely goes unrecognised

So people ...how about recognising a very important component of our side & future .....his speed with Cameron & Smiths outstanding form, is giving this side a much quicker look

This is the first time in what feels like forever that he's consistently finding space and breaking the lines. Combine that with his elite foot skills and he's having a great year. Last year I was convinced he was just a plodder, so far he's proved me wrong. Keep it up Mookay

pretty sure he ended up being dropped late last year. did tambling play the final round ahead of him, not sure to be honest. anyway, he has been a lot better this year. what i've liked a lot is that he seems to be hitting the congestion a lot harder and at a good pace. this gives him a much better chance to break from the contest or gain the extra couple of metres required to gain a bit of time. would also suggest that he's playing more of a wing role than the hbf that he largely failed at for a fair bit last year. but he certainly deserves his spot. he might have gotten a bit worried being the next most logical whipping boy in line, but i doubt there'd be many that don't think he thoroughly deserves his spot in the team right now.

He's been playing well, but the pessimist in me is always suspicious when it happens in a guys final contract year. Still, he deserves some credit because he does make the side much better when he's playing well.

Having a good year. Could still become that player we all hoped he would be. Not there yet but much improved I love watching him run with the ball.

Probably up to this season, he was perfect trade bait, a decently quick mid who doesn't do enough.

Since round 4/5 he's been proving me wrong and i'm enjoying it.

No doubt he's having a better year pushing those touches up from 15 - 16 to 20 - 21. Well done.

I will call him out for an absolute howler last night. First quarter he's running through half forward and has Tex in the clear - just has to hit from about 25m. Could have got Tex away and rocked the stadium.

Kicked it straight over his head:eek:

In my opinion leading the BOG with Danger at this stage. Would be our most consistent poler this year but danger would have a few more BOG's

I've noticed his delivery into 50 is pretty ordinary all the time actually. consistently gets the depth wrong.

But yeah OP, he's ben relay good overall this season. and for someone that's lightly built he's a good tackler too.

He's one of the few that I've seen do some gut running into space. Martin, Lynch and Sloaney are the others that come to mind.

I agree WW, what about his sizzling lace out pace to the river end finding a Crow inside 50....CLASS...not sure who it was but it was a memorable moment.
Dunno how he spotted him up through what looked like a shitload of traffic from where I was sitting.

Are you talking about the Bnf? Danger, Sloane, Talia and Smith would be around the mark.

Agree. Just love it when the penny drops for a young player

Wait wut...

Meh

His touches have increased through one area only - he gets a couple more handballs per game. He's flatlining or down in nearly every other area

Fact is he's a middle of the road player on too much money. ship has sailed

Montagna comes to mind as a player that took until mid 20's to 'get it'. Can happen and Dmac looks good this year his body is holding up.

But apparently if we lose Mackay at years end, it's a nothing loss

So a side that was lacking pace has supporters gladly GIVING him away and saying good riddance  .......it simply never amazes me anymore

Agree with this

Pre 2014 performances rightfully criticised however muched improved this season and really taking the game on which is critical for a player of his type.....

However the final improvement is that he just needs to consistently ice those kicks into the forward 50, DMac in a big moment early in the under little pressure missed Tex on a nice lead that would have given Tex an early shot at goal 40m out directly in front. Given DMac role as one of our designated users he just needs to consistently ice these forward 50 entries especially those opportunities under little pressure

When evaluating DMac's career I think it is also fair to use Brodie Smith as a fair comparison

Brodie has now played 60 odd games in 4 seasons compared to DMac's 113 games in 7 season however Brodie has reached a higher baseline in half the time

It's been a long frustrating wait for DMac now he needs to maintain and build on his 2014 efforts

Silly comparison

That assumes all players are meant to reach the same standard of performance .......therefore if players don't reach Dangerfields baseline they're are deemed to have failed ......silly logic
