I don't disagree with what you're saying Crow-Mo, but keep in mind that contract negotiations don't have to be 'hostile.'

If Mackay was holding out for a little more cash, it doesn't have to be a "Give me more cash or I go," scenario, it could be a "I'll prove to you I'm worth an extra $20k by years end."

The Club would obviously have an idea of the range they expect to pay him, but a good performance over the rest of the season could dictate whether it's the high end of the range, the middle, or the bottom.

if he wants a little extra, he'd be much better just asking for it. Given the club's hardline (something I don't always agree with, but still...) going all out for a little might just as likely have the opposite effect on the clubs thinking of him, his character and his committment.

Some how I don't think it would come to this, firstly, by the sounds David is a great bloke with his head screwed on right, so I'd doubt we'd have any trouble in this regard. Secondly, Trigg came out recently and said that if we wanted to keep a player we would. If we look at the blokes who we've recently had contractual disputes with, namely Welsh and Hudson, both were nearing 30, weren't out and out stars of the comp, Welsh had constant injury worries, Huddo just back from an knee reco and had behavioural issues. The club didn't want to give out contracts to blokes who were perhaps seeing the writing on the wall, that if they weren't careful, their places in the team would be in jerpardy and probably wouldn't get another contract beyond their next. Hence they went to greener pastures and really are we missing them that much?

Mackay is a different kettle of fish, he is an up and coming star of the comp, potential 10+ year player who is playing decent footy in just his second year of AFL. This blokes signiture, along with Kurt Tippets are probably our highest priorities at the moment in terms of contracts and I'd think that we would be trying our hardest to keep these boys, all they'd have to say is "jump" and we'd say "how high". Signing a contract is a big thing and perhaps this boy isn't ready, perhaps he feels he has more to offer and wants true value, maybe he is considering leaving who knows at this point. Ths would definitely not be the first time contract discussions have been put off, but at the end of the day if he wants to leave there is little more we can do than what we are currently doing and then if it does happen all we can do is make sure we get as much as possible for him in return.

fair point :thumbsu:

James you touched on something very key I think.

Where Triggy has said if we want to keep someone we will - now I personally think that was rhetoric and spin at the time of the welsh & hudson departures to reassure everyone the club is in control. but that doesn't matter, what does matter is how that committment would look if McKay ups and leaves.

remember that would be unprecedented. 2 years and done, for a player we like and have played.

I used to think the same but losing Watts, Stenglein, Johnson, Hudson and Meesen changed my mind. Not even Freo suffer from the go home factor like we do. Port have only lost one required player in 5 years, in the same period, we will have lost 5, including Mckay.

Nick Stevens just outside of the 5 years?

Anyway, the biggest problem both the Crows & Port have in retaining players is that we are both based in Adelaide.

What prancing stud of a hormone driven young footballer wouldn't prefer the nightlife & delights of Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, hell even Perth, to quaint old Adelaide & our plethora of old-age pensioners?

Maybe when the new mining operations are in full swing our demographics will change, perhaps?

In the meantime, both clubs just need to work their butts off to retain the quality kids, it can't be easy!

But McKay, IF he goes, will be the first to just come out and say (having been given playing time) "you know, I just don't and never wanted to be here. bye".
which is in a whole new ball park.

Maybe, but the important word is "if".

From his manager's perspective, it might not be that "they're holding out for more money" or they want to leave. It might just be that it is a bit cheeky for Adelaide to try and lock him up longterm after his best game for the club (and seven games into his career). Giving the advice of "hold on, son - let's wait 'til the end of the year and talk contract with them then" is probably what the manager should say.

You don't get out much do you. If ever I need a heart starter I just stroll down Rundle Mall. Best looking birds in the world.

I don't see a problem, IMO he just want to concentrate on his footy until near the end of he season, assess his options and then see where his future is.

The problem will arise if he hasn't signed by the end of the minor round.

Put yourself in the shoes of David Mackay's manager. What would you want him to do? Knowing full well that he is Victorian and will have at least half a dozen clubs wanting him as his contract ends. David may well intend on staying here, and they may well be quite happy with the Crows offer. But who's to know what deal other clubs will offer? A Melbourne club may offer a massive deal, well over market rate. They may not. But the smart advice to David Mackay would be to wait and see.

was the capitalisation not enough emphasis? ;)

it's his second contract, and he's been ok. it will be a very, very vanilla affair. it's mid way through the last year of his contract, of course the club will be trying to get the contract sorted. but there will be no fireworks in it, too early, and he's not been THAT good.

he won't have to wait, he'll know very well long before the season is out whether that is going to happen.

Mackay feels at home
ANDREW CAPEL | May 08, 2008 12:30am

ADELAIDE is convinced rising star David Mackay will soon commit his future to the club.

The Crows have denied reports that the dashing wingman is homesick and will seek a return to Victoria - where his girlfriend and family still live - when his contract expires at the end of the season, saying "we don't believe any of that to be correct".

"The facts are David has personally told me he wants to stay at this footy club," Adelaide football operations manager John Reid said. "So we are very confident we will retain him. He wants to stay and we will negotiate with his management as the season progresses."

Mackay's manager, Craig Vozzo, has put off contract negotiations with Adelaide until "mid-season".

However, Reid said nothing sinister could be read into this.

"Negotiations with his management are very cordial, they are not trying to do anything untoward," he said. "They've just asked if we could hold off until a little bit later in the year after David has played a little more football and the club has agreed to that."

Mackay, 19, played his best AFL game against North Melbourne last week, gaining a career-high 23 possessions with six inside-50s and four clearances to be among the Crows' best. He has played every game for Adelaide this year after playing just one SANFL match for South Adelaide in his debut season last year because of a chronic hamstring injury.

It is understood Mackay's management has put off negotiations in the hope Mackay continues his dramatic rise which will add significant dollars to his next contract.

Crows team-mate Brent Reilly, who is Mackay's mentor, said he had not noticed "anything to suggest he wants to go home".

And he offered this advice.

"I thought a couple of times about going home when I was younger but staying here was the best thing I ever did," Victorian Reilly said.

Coach Neil Craig is understandably delighted with the progress of the Oakleigh Chargers' TAC Cup premiership player, who was taken with pick 48 at the 2006 national draft. "David's progressing nicely," Craig said.

"He's come from a long way back in that he had a really horrendous year last year with injury. For a guy in his first year to spend the whole year out and be living interstate takes great resilience.

"He's a really mature lad for his age and we talk about (Jason) Porplyzia's skills and cleanness, David Mackay's got that as well."

Can we all just chill out now about DMac.

I reckon he will sign on for 3 years..

Smart boy I think.

Hey, I'm 49 years old, been happily married for 24 years.

I've probably been married for longer than most of BigFooty's posters have been alive.

Of course I don't do any Rundle Mall perves, anymore, but I can assure you, what you see there, you'd see 10 fold in the other states, it must be so, just look at the difference in population numbers.

I am sick of these players that get home sick (if thats what this is all about). If he doesn't want to be here then I say we should stop wasting our time straight away.

We keep recruiting these kids from interstate when we known damn well they're gonna get all sooky, sooky & yet we let guys like Brad Ebert go to West Coast.

Our clubs hierarchy really have know idea, they either get rid of the players that want to be at the club or don't recruit them at all and recruit the ones that don't want to come here.

Goodbye David, good luck back home I hope it makes you feel better.
Post's like this always come to bite you in the bum.

Why the hell would you write this?
