David Schwarz

I took the liberty of starting a thread for this, hope no-one minds. It's open for anyoen to give there thoughts on Schwarz and his career....

No matter what anyone says about Schwarz, in particular the last few seasons of his career, the man was a champion. There is not doubt about it. Most of us are old enough to remember watching him dominate in 1994 and in particular the final series which was highlighted on the AFL site briefly. He took a bucket load of marks and kicked many more goals in that season.

The fact that he came back from three horrendous knee injuries is a credit to the man. I was there, like many of you, the day he made his full return in 1997 against Adelaide and I'm also sure many of you were on your feet when the umpire dis-allowed a mark he took in the forward line within the first few minutes he was on.

To be honest, I can't imagine the Melbourne Football Club without him. I'm still in shock at the fact he has retired. He has been a true champion of our grand club and he will always be remembered as one. The next chance I get, I'll be having a beer for you Ox and even though we can't really tell you, you will always be remembered of fondly.

You are a champion David Schwarz, and you always will be.

I am the first to admit I was not the biggest fan of David Schwarz. His big mouth and a few other incidents always had me worried.
In saying that, I do admire him. With all the injuries he had, he could have given it away, most would have. But he forced his way back and played with pride and passion. He was passionate about the MFC, and he did not hide it.
I will never forget that horrible day at the MCG when he did his knee against the Swans. We were all in shock. You could hear a pin drop. Then when he made the comeback against Adelaide. We got thrashed but we didn't care, the Ox got through.
Then there was the 1994 finals series. Just amazing. If injuries had not been such a huge problem, he would have been remembered as one of the Melbourne greats.
It will certainly be different not seeing Schwarz playing in the red and blue, ordering others around in the style he does. It is also sad that he had to end his career with a suspension and a loss. Hopefully the boys will lift for him this weekend.

Going on from the other thread (i didn't see this one until after i posted:( ).

I remember listening to the radio when Schwartz did his last knee and thinking "Christ, that's it, i hope he enjoyed his career" Seeing him on the ground after that was not only a shine of light to the MFC supporters but also any AFL supporters as through the wonders of modern technology, the curse of a knee reconstruction could now be a season ending injury, NOT a career.

Sure, sometimes we wished he would shut up and play football, but he is a character, in a game that breeds them, like them or not.

Where am i going with this? I don't know.

David Schwartz: 1991-2002 Champion, Premiership Player, Icon. Sadly missed (but not this game).

I JUST LOVED WATCHING THAT MAN PLAY!!!

yeah same i dont have much time to say what i wont well i have the time i just need time to think and word it properly and so not to forget but he was/ is a champion and i loved watching him play. for many years he helped shape the melbourne footy club and he will never be forgotten.

Congrats Ox on a interupted but great career. Pity you didn't step out of football on a high liked promised after the 2000 Grand Final . You'll always make me laugh on your behaviour at the racetrack, then asked by the media at training how things are going you'd reply a pretty normal week!! After you'd lost a packet.

You have shown great dedication to the game and I believe having stepped out at the right time.

I'll always remember you as a great player, as you were a pleasure to watch on your day.

Yesterday was a sad day in football.

sorry dee supporters for posting on your board

well, as some of you know, im not too good with puting how i feel into words, so im not able to write some long amazing piece of writing. ill just type and see what comes out... what i will say is that oxy was one of the most inspiring people (players) to have ever been with the dees and in the AFL. he is brillian. sorry, he WAS brilliant. he played like no other, and played with all he had. i guess what he had is now gone, so decided not to play any more.

him leaving has changed the club in a huge way. it brought tears to my eyes seeing what he said to the players before their training session. and i honestly dont want him to go. i loved how he played, i loved his big mouth and that he wasn't affraid to voice his opinion and i loved that he could 'lightly tap' a player with his shoulder and make him fly a few meters down the ground. i loved his hight spirits and all the **** that came along with him when he went out to play.

the man was amazing and will be sadly missed. have a good life oxy, you'll be forever remembered.

David Schwarz - All Bets Are Off

Sorry for digging up an ancient thread, but am unable to start new threads (due to yellow, I think).
Anybody else interested in reading Ox's autobiography "All Bets Are Off"?
Should be a good read, IMO.

Re: David Schwarz - All Bets Are Off

yer I might have a read of that.

Re: David Schwarz - All Bets Are Off

A combination of the previous thread title, first post, and my lack of looking at the date the thread was started, I thought the big man had passed away...jeez.

Re: David Schwarz - All Bets Are Off

probably the most dedicated bump ever on BF, kudos to YDKJ.

but yes, amazing (+ horrible) story, will definitely consider buying the book.

Re: David Schwarz - All Bets Are Off

Was my dad's favourite player. I knew about the witnessing the fathers murder, i heard about that somewhere... probably from dad maybe. I thought it was pretty common knowledge.

Great player. Most biased supporter in the media which is AWESOME!!! :D

haha I was wondering the same thing.

Will buy book. I went to borders yesterday and tried to find it. I asked a girl where they kept their new releasers now (as they didn't seem to be where they used to be) and she told me they didn't bother with such a section. I walked out. Okay I know this has little to do with Ox but seriously WTF.

Being released tomorrow, I believe. IMO, she sounded rude and I'd go to another bookshop.
Watched Ox in action against the Swans this morning. Scary to think how much better he would have been without the knee injuries and the stress of his gambling addiction in the back of his mind during games.

My old man, who is a Bombers supporter, he was always told me
that David Schwarz - prior to doing his knee - was a freak and wouldve
went on to be anything.

I never really thought much of it, because I cant remember too much
about watching before 1995.

But thanks to the footy flashbacks, Ive managed to tape a game the
other night, was a 1994 round 24 clash against the Swans and a game
in which Schwarz kicks 9 goals straight!

Schwarz looks strong and very athletic, dare I say that he moves like
Jack Watts - or vice versa.
Judging soley off this game, as its the only game I have prior to him
doing his knee, Watts is the closest thing to Schwarz Ive seen.
Just in the way they move, athletism, beautiful kick, strong mark.

Big Ox was a freak, could've been a superstar but cruelly suffered three knee reco's in two years. In 1994, he kicked 60 goals, took the most marks in the competition and polled 15 Brownlow votes as a 22 year old.

Another bump, but I honestly think his book is the best AFL players I have read. Wish I could have seen the Ox play.

Off topic (but very topical, lol) - read Liam's book :thumbsu:

Had it been decided to not write an biography on a 20 year old and perhaps waited until his AFL career was over it could of been the most interesting biography from a footballer ever.

I haven't read LJ's book and I'm pretty sure it's not about his football career but
Comment still stands.
:p
