Saw Michael Clarke on EMT last night. Was cringe-worthy is some parts. Seems full of so much insincerity at times. And repeats the same cliche things a lot.

The hallmarks of great captains like Waugh, Border and Ponting is they had an element of mongrel of c*nt about them. Watching Clarke sit there with the meticulous hair-do and leather jacket denying rumours of spits with previous and current palyers - I don't get a sense of comfort that he is a good leader of the Australian cricket team.

Somewhat true, but there is quite literally nobody else who is anywhere near credentialled enough or even cemented in the side that deserves to be captain other than him. The fact that Brad Haddin of all people can waltz back in and immediately be rewarded with vice captaincy is testament to that.

Yeah I agree there is no one around better suited - but it shows a real demise in cricketing stocks in Australia at this point of time. Its sad!

Haddin was brought back entirely to be vice captain.

Not sure entirely. Wade has proven to be less than capable at the highest level, and there is no one other than Haddin to fall back on. Paine's form has badly waned.

How about just picking the best keeper in the country? Too late now, we just have to hope Haddin does the job.

Aust cricket seems to be in a downward spiral that it has no option but to make decisions that plunge it further into the mire that is public opinion. the VC issue with haddin is but evidence to this. the dearth of talent has coincided with perceived leadership issues resulting in a neverending darkness. let's see, we need leaders. hmmm, pick best leader, put him in the team despite others with better FC records. continual spiral....

Hartley would be the common sense selection.

But with the Australian Cricket Team, as Richie puts it, the trouble with common sense is that its just not common.

Wade has already proven to be more capable batting in tough situations than Haddin at test level, Haddin is the bloke you want in at 5/300 not 5/100 and with our current lot the first scenario is going to be very rare.

Wade hasn't proven himself to be a better keeper than Haddin but if we seriously dumped wade for his below par keeping we would not bring back another poor keeper like Haddin.

Haddin seems to be universally liked inside the team and gives clarke at least one senior bloke he can trust, i must admit i was dead against bringing back Haddin a few months ago as it was clearly for off field not cricketing reasons but this team really does seem to be in freefall and maybe it really is necessary to bring him back in the hope he can calm some of this off field rubbish down.

My info (whether you care to believe me or not - if you don't I dont care - just ignore me because chances are I'm already ignoring you) is that Haddin was brought back almost solely to provide Clarke with additional support as Captain - nothing more nothing less. Wade is exceptionally unlucky given the circumstances. The Selectors seriously looked at taking Bailey for the Ashes as a fallback option if the wheels fell off. This was related to Clarke not having the dressing room or only essentially having Warner in his corner and now he's unlikely to be there. Given Clarke's back issue has flared again, there is a big chance they could add Bailey to the squad as the shadow bat. Not sure what would happen if Clarke couldn't get up fo a Test. At the minute that would make Haddin Captain.

Anyone's guess who is our next permanent Test Captain after Clarke.

Yeah that seemed pretty obvious at the time as well.

The role of the VC is seen as being a back up to the captain. Watson wasn't doing this so they brought in someone else who needed to have a certain seniority in terms of test (so no Bailey or Voges).

Would also not be suprised if Voges or Bailey played if Clarke were injured so that they could be the defacto captain.

Prior to determining the Ashes Squad, the Chairman of Selectors was talking to a contemporary of his, canvassing opinions, discussing various players , but the batting and the team dynamics were getting him down. The man at the other end of the phone in an attempt to pump him up said in an upbeat tone "We can win this!" - all he got at the other end was silence................................... Eventually Invers began to speak and issued the following statement; "If DK Lillee bowled to our top six - he'd have four for inside half an hour".

I'm curious as to why Clarke so little respect in the dressing room. He's the only decent bat we've got, surely that would be worth a few points? He appears to be a decent skipper onfield in terms of tactics.

The "Katich" incident

The "Boat" Incident

"Homeworkgate"

Clarke has few friends within the playing group and not much respect as a bloke amongst most as a result. Sad but true.

Which is why he should have nothing to do with team selection.

No arguments here - but the argus review recommended it and so it became, Having said that the Captain has already had input, now it's written in stone.

bailey didn't have a great first class season at all but has been a warrior for a long time for tasmania and been good, averaging roughly 40 down in tassie. and in the odi's he has played has shown he could make the step up to international cricket.

i'd be confident in him stepping into test cricket. at least more confident than just about anyone else that we could bring into the team.
