Any tennis fans around?
Anywayz who thinks the Aussies are guna kick sum ass on friday? I think with Leyton and Mark we have a pretty good chance~!

yeah, a tennis fan right here...disappointed they didn't show the masters cup on fta tv (especially with federer in good form) but anyways...

i'm quietly confident australia will win, but then i thought we'd beat france on grass as well (the crowd reaction when john fitzgerald announced wayne arthurs would play in the decider was painfully funny)...

this time though, no recognisable grass courters for the spanish - haven't heard too much about this feliciano lopez kid...they say he might play ahead of moya - is he any real threat?

hewitt looks & sounds focused but there is no substitute for matchplay...that said, regardless of which ferrero turns up, he should set australia off to a good start. and who knows, we might see arthurs play on the final day again - but this time after we've wrapped up the final.

Here's the draw:

http://foxsports.news.com.au/story/0,8659,7992039-23209,00.html

The draw: (prefix denotes players' rank within team):
TOMORROW
Opening singles (from 11am)
2-Lleyton Hewitt (Aus) v 1-Juan Carlos Ferrero (Esp)
1-Mark Philippoussis (Aus) v 2-Carlos Moya (Esp)

SATURDAY
Doubles (2pm)
Todd Woodbridge and Wayne Arthurs (Aus) v Alex Corretja and Felciano Lopez (Esp)

SUNDAY
Reverse singles (from 11am)
1-Mark Philippoussis (Aus) v 1-Juan Carlos Ferrero (Esp)
2-Lleyton Hewitt (Aus) v 2-Carlos Moya (Esp)

It should be a pretty even tie. No gimme matches in this fixture.

I reckon we will win 3-1 with the last rubber being a dead rubber. If they play that out then probably 3-2 as Lleyton wont play and Wayne will fill in.

My tips/guesses:

Ferrero win over Hewitt in 4 sets
Philippoussis win over Moya in 4 sets

Todd Woodbridge and Wayne Arthurs win over Alex Corretja and Felciano Lopez in 5 sets

Philippoussis win over Ferrero in 4 sets

DEAD RUBBER:
Lopez over Arthurs in 2 sets

Final Score 3-2 Australia :)

We'd do well to get one win out of the Scud I reckon.

Then again, he is unbeaten in Davis Cup final rubbers. :D

Should be a ripper. Hope Australia wins it after what happened against France a few years ago.

I can't see any of the games being straight sets. Should be a tough slog

it's gonna be a close 1...but let's hope the aussie's kick sum spain ass! haha...also is anyone going 2 it? very expensive to actually get seats i heard it was close to $1,000 for certian sections!!!!!

All the tickets were $325 for adults and $295 for concession. Same price as two years ago.

Very expensive.

They were the only ones that went on sale through ticketek. If it was similar to the last final two years ago, only about 3000 - 3500 were available to the public. The rest went to sponsors, tour groups, corporates, etc. I lined up for a couple of hours to get them.

As much as that disappoints me, I was there two years ago and I sure as hell wasn't going to miss out on getting tickets this time. Apart from a Saints flag there isn't too much more I'd rather see than a davis cup win.

Hewitt, Phillipoussis, Ferrero and Moya. You can't get much better than that.

I'd love to see the Scud bring us home in the 4th match but as long as we win, who cares.

Hewitt wins the first rubber.

3-6 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-0!) 6-2

Hard to pin-point exactly what went wrong for Ferrero. He looked the goods at two sets to one. The match opened up in the fourth set; a lot of breaks of serve. After that JCF just lost his edge and Hewitt dominated the tie-breaker and continued that momentum into the final set.

C'MON!! :D

Sounds like Lleyton played really well to come back from 2 sets to 1 down to win fairly comfortably in the end. That 4th set tiebreak score is umbelievable, 7-0!! The crowd would have helped Lleyton finish over the top in the final set.

Lets hope Mark Philippoussis can win and gives us a 2-0 lead.

Moya squares the tie at one all

6-4 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7-3 or 7-4?)

Philipoussis just wasn't in it in the first two sets. He came back in the third and fourth. Very hard fought fourth set. Another fourth set breaker; and Moya just won the crucial points.

As is so often the case with Davis Cup ties, the doubles now looms as the crucial match.

I missed the National Anthem fiasco this morning. Why on earth would Tennis Australia get James "fat face" Morrissey to play the national anthems anyway?

Did anyone else think that if the Scud was able to get the match into a 5th set he was a huge chance of winning it?

He got back into the game well but the first 2 sets it was like he didn't want to be out there at all...

Bad ground strokes and very little serve/volley from Flipper...

The whole Tie hinges on Today's Doubles as on yesterday's performances IMO ...the Scud will not be able to overcome Ferrero and we need today win to get to Hewitt V Moya in the decider...

If that happens, then put your House on an Aussie win as Lleyton will be SO PUMPED !!!

But if the Spanish win the doubles then I can't see us coming back :(

But I hope I'm proved well and truly WRONG ;)

Easy win in the doubles

Arthurs/Woodbridge

6-3 6-1 6-3

Corretja/Lopez

I didn't really watch this one that closely but I think its safe to say the Spanish pair looked as hopeless as the scoreline suggests.

2-1... we're in the box seat now.

Woodbridge played flawless tennis. He's only won 78 doubles tournaments in his career but I don't know if he would have played any better than that.

You have to love Wayne Arthurs. Apart from his serve there isn't much to his game but he just loves playing for his country. He served well and on the rare occassions where we were under pressure he held his nerve.

Yesterday we were there for nearly 8 hours. Today only 2 hours.

I've always been a big Phillipoussis fan. To see him clinch the Davis Cup for Australia in his hometown would be so fitting.

On yesterdays form he may struggle to overcome Ferrero as Dodgey suggested but this is it. I reckon he'll come through.

If not, Hewitt vs Moya will be amazing. Moya has had Hewitt's measure in the past which will only add to it.

C'MON AUSSIES:D
Hopefully Mark can do some good 2moz and we should be set, I'm pretty certian Leyton will kick ass but he had a really close game on friday....everyone got their Aussie Open tickets?? i surley do!

WOOHOOOO THE AUSSIES ARE GONNA WIN, 5-0 in the 5th set.
Ive loved mark since 1996(i think) when he beat pete sampras in the aussie open, and have supported him all the way.
Mark you just made yourself a hero.

Even if mark didnt win this lleyton would have beaten moya.

AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE
OI OI OI

Philippoussis seals it...

7-5 6-3 1-6 2-6 6-0 (!)

It was looking dicey there with a set to go, but the Scud came through.

AUSTRALIA DAVIS CUP CHAMPIONS 2003!!!!!!

Yep. Spain were really no chance on grass to start with. It would have been a credit for them to drag it to a 5th rubber even if they lost it.
