"Wrong Spanish anthem played at Davis Cup

The Davis Cup final between Spain and Australia has got off to a controversial start after the wrong Spanish anthem was played at the opening ceremony.

Spain's Sports Minister Juan Antonio Gomez-Angulo waved furiously and yelled from the stands as the pre-civil war republican anthem was played.

Gomez-Amgulo was fuming at a press conference afterwards claiming the error was an insult not only to the players and Spanish delegation but to the entire nation.

There were rumblings amongst Spanish supporters in the crowd as soon as the pre-Franco anthem began but Australian captain John Fitzgerald quickly apologised to the crowd after learning of the mistake.

The correct current anthem for Spain was then played as the players - Juan Carlos Ferrero and Lleyton Hewitt - walked out on court for the opening singles rubber.

Gomez-Angulo demanded that the anthems and flag raising part of the ceremony be repeated before Saturday's doubles match."

Whoops? What a ****ing stuff up. Hewitt wins first rubber! Nice!

As if it matters. They could've played the Hokey Pokey and I wouldn't notice.

Just like Spain was an insult by the way the crowd behave a few ago in spain in that final.

And by the way the Spain people gave the Tennis Australia the song to be played at the opening cermony.

So stop you sooking Juan Antonio Gomez-Angulo or else go home

I suppose it would be like us playing Spain and they played "God Save The Queen"!

I think Spain needs to relax and then while they are relaxing lose!:D

Sounds like something you'd expect in America.

I for one am ashamed. That's not a stuff up, it's inept and an embarrassment.

I agree - how p1ssed off would Aussies be if someone, somewhere dared to get ours wrong before a major international sporting event???

Shame Tennis Australia. Shame.

Agreed. It reflects poorly on Australia.

How long ago was the civil war in Spain? And why would we still have that anthem on tape or disc or whatever?

What, like the NZ guy who didn't know the words of our national anthem pre Bledisloe Cup match, or the death march they played at a Skiing World Champs/Cup when Zali Stegall (?) won.

I didn't see the opening ceremony but i was led to believe that James Morrisson performed it.

Surely it wasn't 'accidentally deliberate'? You know, payback for the harsh treatment last time. Australians wouldn't be that cunning would they? We don't do that sort of thing!!

The "Himno de Riega" was never the Spanish anthem under the Republic[1933-39],it was the song of the Spanish Socialist Party."Marca Real"was the anthem Isabella 2 to 1933 and from Franco on.And why a member of the Socialist Party would get upset about that particular Anthem is beyond me.
