I happened to get down to Adelaide over the weekend and went to the Oval for the first session of the SA V Qld ING game.
In the words of Richie Benaud "I though I'd seen everything" until the Qld team came onto the ground including a sub fielder. The sub found a nice spot down at third man behind the rope while Joe Dawes bowled the first over. At the end of the over, sub came onto the ground at third man and Dawes spent the next over having a drink and winding down behind the boundary.
This happened for the entire Dawes spell and became the subject of a fair bit of talk around the ground. I thought the whole thing was a disgrace. Imaging Lillee going off the ground after each over and putting his feet up while Thomo did his bit at the other end. Better still imagine Ian Chappell allowing such a thing to happen from an opposition side.
I hope this isn't a sign of things to come and while I don't think a ball went down to third man for the innings ( a few went finer), I thought it was weak as piss for Dawes not to be able to support his opening partner from the other end. If he can't bowl ten overs and spend the entire innings on the ground (it was only 26c in Adelaide) then he really needs to take a good look at his fitness and/or attitude.
