Dawes looked huge last night! Has he bulked up alot since we won the flag (I love saying that!).

Still looked agile, but seemed to have alot more confidence in his body and strength in the marking contests last night. Once he can get his conversion rate up around 75% he could become our greatest spearhead since... BT!

Anyone got any news on his injury? Corky only????

Yep, he's come back even better then last year, and you got the feeling he loved being "one out" last night inside 50.:thumbsu:

Cloke and Dawes will become the most formidable marking pair in the AFL this season, don't worry about that.

And as for the "injury", I trust what I hear from Prince (king in waiting) Bucks, he says it's just a "corky" and he will be right.:)

Yeah he looked Impressive and Love the Tackle he laid in the 1st Game.

He seemed to kick more Roving Goals though then taking Big Marks.

Showed that he can handle being the only Tall in the Forward Line

there were a few blokes last night who seem to have taken massive confidence out of playing in a premiership, dawes looked like he was toying with them, thomas just had this presence about him when out there, pendles was cruising around in first gear doing about 5km/hr at 500rpm's (in car terms) and still looked a class above. Heater and toovey seemed to just know they are the best in the comp and that is that, it's hard to explain but it seemed noticeable to me

I still have an issue with Dawes and his lack of ability to take an overhead mark. He does get ground level ball but imagine if he could take the odd pack mark? Makes you wonder how good we could be.

there was a bloke who played for north melbourne in the 90's who couldn't take an overhead mark to save his life (mainly due to injuries) and he turned out to be a reasonable player and north weren't too shabby then either

Who was the Player?

Agreed mate, I couldn't believe how confident Tooves looked! He was awesome last night. (the rest also)

ok i will put this straight

in no way am i comparing dawes to carey or saying he will be anything like carey
all i did was answer a post about his overhead marking and i was using carey as an example of a big forward who couldn't mark overhead because of bung shoulders yet he was still a decent player (yes im being funny, he is one of the all time best) in the best team of the late 90's

dawes not being able to mark overhead isnt the be all if he is able to create contests and do everything else top notch

Cloke Dawes and Tarrent in forward line = wasted recruitment, Tarrant is far, FAR, FAR TOO versatile and dynamic to be wasted on the forward line where he is no longer suited since his recent self-conversion to a backman/wing

Did most of his best work at ground level, did look to have a lot more confidence though, if he can continue improving we will be a much better side for it.

This is what I was most impressed with last night, agility for a big man is paramount these days.

Dawes' ground level work is more effective than his marking, which is odd for a guy of his build. Creates a contest aerially though, so he brings plenty still. If he could become a one grab overhead mark we'd have a certainty for 60+ goals.

It's a stupid comparison for obvious reasons but Buddy Franklin early in his career survived off his ability at ground level, he played much more like a foward pocket then a FF. Lead and chest marks or finding the ball at ground level.

Dawes doesn't have the same pace as Buddy infact he is pretty slow but early on in his career his compensated for his lack of ability in the air by being far better then most his size at ground level. He would often get spoiled only to recover the ball at ground level. It was a skill that I always had mixed feelings about because obviously you'd prefer for him to be getting it in the air. That said I think with the added confidence this year he may step up.

All I can say is I'm thankful he was injured as an 18 year old and all the other clubs let him slip to us. Even back then he seemed like the #2 key position forward behind Hawkins.

As far as I am aware that is a myth preperuated by Collingwood supporters after we drafted him. IIRC he was touted to go about exactly where he went in the draft, Was no where near as highly rated as Gumbleton or Thorpe.

Maybe a rumour, maybe not. I know Hawkins and Dawes both played in the same team and Dawes would have been the main man if it wasn't for Hawkins plus getting injured. Gumby and Thorpe were probably rated ahead of him though but regardless, I'm still happy we got him. His knee injury certainly helped us IMO.

So you know this as a Fact
